Font free: nel design ci vuole carattere

Le font sono quegli elementi maggiormente amati/odiati per un grafico. La font non è altro che un insieme di segni tipografici che hanno lo stesso stile e che vengono usati in tipografia, informatica e graphic design. 
Scrivo amato e odiato perchè il (o la) font può sia migliorare e caratterizzare un logo, un manifesto o un biglietto da visita, se sappiamo già quale tipo utilizzare o almeno la famiglia di font da prendere come riferimento.
Il problema sorge quando le nostre idee per il suo utilizzo non sono ancora ben chiare, allora si che diventa un vero e proprio casino! Mi spiego meglio. Quante volte vi è capitato di iniziare a cercare un tipo di carattere scorrendo, inizialmente i font nella vostra libreria, poi quelli su internet, infine quelli su siti di download di free font? Ecco! Come consiglio personale, posso dirvi che è meglio metterci un pò più di tempo e scegliere con più cura quella manciata di font che vi servirà per fare le prove, che non testarne una ventina che vi confonderanno solo le idee.
Ma torniamo alla nostra font! Ce ne sono di molti tipi, principalmente possiamo dividerle in due famiglie: serif e sans serif.
Serif - sono quelle con le cosiddette "grazie", ovvero piccoli dettagli perpendicolari alle estremità delle aste del carattere,
Sans Serif - le seconde sono prive delle grazie e vengono definite anche "bastoni". La convenzione ci dice di poter usare le prime per applicazioni serie o solenni, mentre le seconde per cose un pò più moderne. Personalmente penso che anche una font "graziata" può essere usata per scrivere una barzelletta su un poster...
Sul web, tra le risorse free, ci sono una marea di siti dove potrete trovarne. Per esempio su www.fonts2u.com e www.1001freefonts.com ci sono tutta una serie di free font da poter scaricare, suddivise ovviamente per categoria.

La font però, si può anche creare: fontstruct.com infatti ci offre una struttura molto semplice per potere creare, modificare ed infine salvare una font di nostra creazione...il tutto dopo essersi registrati.
Non sapete il nome della font che vi piace?
Se invece avete una font particolare che vi piace, ma non sapete come si chiami, niente paura. Salvate una jpg abbastanza chiara del testo e andate su www.myfonts.com. Questo sito, dopo qualche operazione per riconoscere le singole lettere, vi restituirà il nome di quella font.

Fonts are the most loved/hated elements by each web designer. The font is nothing more than a collection of typographic signs that have the same style and are used in typography, graphic design and computer science. I defined fonts loved and hated because this element can enhance and characterize a logo, a poster or a business card, if we already know which type to use, or at least a font family.
Problem comes out when the our ideas for its use are not so clear...then it becomes a real mess! Let me explain. How many times have you start looking for a font scrolling, since before the fonts in your library, and then on the internet, on those sites that collect free download millle million fonts? That's it! As personal advice, I can tell you that, rather, it is better to put a little more time and choose more carefully some fonts that you need to do the tests, in order to not confuse your ideas with lot of elements.
But back to our font! There are many kinds, but mostly we can divide them into two large families: serif and sans serif.
Serif -  contain small details perpendicular to the ends of the rods of the character.
Sans Serif - these are deprived of grace and are defined also "sticks". The agreement says you can use the first applications for series or solemn, and the latter for things more modern. What I say is that even the first group can be used to write a joke on poster...
On the web, including free resources, there are a lot of sites where you can find fonts. For example on www.fonts2u.com and www.1001freefonts.com there are a whole series of freefont that can be downloaded and they are divided in specific category.
If you want you can also create your own font: fontstruct.com gives you a very simple structure to create, edit and then save a font...but you have to submit your email before.
However, if you have a particular font that you like, but you don't know its name, don't worry. Save the text in a jpg format and go to www.myfonts.com.Through this site, after the system have recognize every letters, you will get the name of the font that you are looking for.
