On this blog I've already shared my reflections on some particular cohabitions of people and dolls - it was about erotic dolls or so (just search within the blog with the keyword real doll, sex doll or dummy). Gaialight and Mila's is a different case. While the first is a visual artist sensitive to the infinite reproducibility of experiences, the latter is a sort of giant doll - actually, she's a beautiful, vintage life size fashion dummy - travelling the world together. Mila becomes a kinda second observer by Gaia's side, and mirrors transformations. Please read the artist's statement below:
THE MILA PROJECT
Mila is a life-size mannequin found and purchased on the Internet, almost two years ago. She has been living with me ever since, offering the opportunity to portray her on a daily basis, building a relationship with her light-driven moods and the always-mesmerizing expressivity of her inanimate-ness. The focus of this ongoing, serial documentary project is to symbolically and symbiotically catch glimpses of Humanity itself, yet furtive glimpses through the dialogue of our reciprocal regard – or, to detect in the inanimate the animate, and to find presence beyond mere appearance. As mirror, and as simulation, Mila’s darker moods (as those of mannequins in store windows all over the world) reflect our own sometimes catatonic condition. Her more festive moments, in turn, are peculiar characterizations of other times and other places, an elsewhere effected primarily through her playful (girlish) choice of hairstyle, makeup, and attire, while her return gaze is utterly beyond reproach and somehow mocks all attempts to document and/or fathom these moods.
Su qsto blog ho già condiviso mie riflessioni su alcune particolari coabitazioni di persone e bambole – si trattava di bambole erotiche o giù di lì (basta cercare all’interno del blog con le parole-chiave “real doll”, “sex doll” o anche “dummy”). Ma qllo di Gaialight and Mila è un caso diverso. Mentre la prima è un’artista visuale sensibile all’infinita riproducibilità delle esperienze, l’altra è una specie di bambolona gigante – un bellissimo manichino vintage da vetrina a grandezza naturale – e girano il mondo insieme. Mila diviene una specie di osservatore in seconda al fianco di Gaia, e rispecchia trasformazioni. Ma leggete la dichiarazione dell’artista qui sotto (NB: mia traduzione)
THE MILA PROJECT/IL PROGETTO MILA
Mila è un manichino a grandezza naturale trovato e acquistato su Internet circa due anni fa. Da allora vive con me, dandomi modo di ritrarla ogni giorno, costruendo un rapporto con i suoi umori dettati dalla luce e l’espressività sempre ipnotizzante del suo essere inanimata. Il focus di qsto progetto documentario continuativo e seriale è catturare, simbolicamente e simbioticamente, sguardi dell’Umanità stessa, e ancora sguardi furtivi tramite il dialogo del nostro reciproco guardarci – o scoprire l’animato nell’inanimato e trovare presenza oltre l’apparenza. In quanto specchio, e come simulazione, i momenti più cupi di Mila (come qlli dei manichini nelle vetrine di tutto il mondo) riflettono la nostra a volte catatonica condizione. A loro volta invece, i momenti più festosi sono caratterizzazioni peculiari di altri tempi e di altri luoghi, un altrove primariamente realizzato per effetto delle sue giocose (infantili) scelte di acconciatura, trucco e abbigliamento, mentre lo sguardo che lei restituisce è totalmente al di là del rimprovero e in qualche modo mima tutti i tentativi di documentare e/o afferrare questi stati d’animo.
