Il saluto del Rettore Maggiore ai giovani dell’MGS 2014

In occasione della Festa di Don Bosco, lo scorso 31 Gennaio, il nostro Rettor Maggiore Don Pascual Chávez Villanueva ha voluto mandare da Torino Valdocco, dove si trovava per festeggiare il ritorno dell’urna di Don Bosco in città, un messaggio rivolto a tutti i Giovani dell’MGS 2014.

Un messaggio commosso e speciale, dal momento che è l’ultimo che ci rivolge in qualità di Rettor Maggiore. Don Pascual è stato infatti eletto nono “Successore di Don Bosco” nel 2002 e il suo incarico è stato rinnovato nel 2008 per il secondo sessennio consecutivo. Il mandato è giunto ora al termine e il 27° Capitolo Generale dei Salesiani, che si terrà a Roma dal 22 Febbraio al 12 Aprile 2014, avrà tra le altre cose il compito di eleggere il nuovo Rettor Maggiore. Ecco dunque il saluto di don Pasqual.

Sognate in grande e seguite il vostro sogno
con gioia, entusiasmo e convinzione

Amatissimi giovani,
Non vi nascondo la mia emozione nel rivolgervi l’ultimo messaggio come Rettor Maggiore. Vorrei che queste mie parole giungessero al vostro cuore per dirvi che sempre vi ho amati e vi amerò sempre. Voi siete al centro della mia vita, della mia preghiera e del mio lavoro. Siete la mia gioia e la sorgente d’ispirazione e di speranza per il presente e per il futuro che il Signore mi riserva.
Grazie per l’amore che mi avete sempre dimostrato, per le vostre preghiere che mi hanno sostenuto nei momenti difficili del mio delicato servizio. In questo momento vedo i vostri volti illuminati dalla gioia di vivere e di credere, ma anche preoccupati per un futuro incerto. Ho condiviso le speranze e le sofferenze che leggevo nei vostri occhi. Durante questi 12 anni del mio bel mestiere di Successore di Don Bosco abbiamo vissuto insieme momenti indimenticabili come le Giornate Mondiali della Gioventù a Sydney, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro; i diversi Incontri del MGS delle Ispettorie; Confronti e Campo-Bosco a Colle Don Bosco o altrove. Sono stati tempi forti dello Spirito, esperienze di comunione e di spiritualità salesiana, momenti di condivisione e fraternità che ci hanno fatto crescere nell’amore a Gesù, alla Chiesa e a Don Bosco.
Grazie, cari giovani, per la vostra presenza rivelatrice dell’amore di Dio, per la freschezza e l’entusiasmo che avete comunicato in questi incontri, per la gioia che avete dato al mio cuore. Con cuore di padre continuerò ad amarvi e per questo voglio invitarvi a guardare con speranza al vostro futuro. Dio non ci abbandona e ci sta dando segni grandi del suo amore. 

Papa Francesco, segno dell’amore di Dio per la sua Chiesa

E’ con grande gioia e stupore di molti che assistiamo oggi all’annuncio di una nuova primavera per la Chiesa e per il mondo stesso. I profeti di sventura che decretavano l’inverno della Chiesa, ancora una volta, devono ricredersi. Questo nuovo soffio di primavera, dono dello Spirito Santo, ha un volto ed un cuore, quelli di Papa Francesco. Il suo presentarsi umile, semplice e sorridente rivela la sua vita interiore. E’ un uomo intensamente unificato con un punto focale attorno al quale si concentrano gesti, atteggiamenti e pensiero: il Signore Gesù, percepito sempre come Parola di un Dio della bontà, della tenerezza, della misericordia.
Ci colpisce fortemente la figura di questo Papa tanto dolce e, al tempo stesso, uomo-roccia, solidamente ancorato a un punto di radicamento dove converge tutta la sua forza morale, la libertà di agire e parlare, insieme a un profetismo illuminante. Il punto unificante attorno al quale si concentra tutta la sua persona è, al tempo stesso, un grande sogno e un progetto di vasto respiro.
Quale è questo sogno che ha sedotto Papa Francesco e che contagia e affascina tanti giovani? E’ una Chiesa libera dalla mondanità spirituale, libera dalla tentazione di chiudersi nel suo quadro istituzionale, libera dalla tendenza all’imborghesimento e dalla chiusura in se stessa, libera soprattutto dal clericalismo e del maschilismo. Una Chiesa incarnata in questo mondo, risplendente nei più poveri e nei sofferenti. Una casa aperta per tutta l’umanità. Nel suo cuore c’è il grande desiderio di una Chiesa accogliente verso tutti, al di là delle diversità delle culture, delle razze, delle tradizioni, delle confessioni religiose. Una Chiesa che esca sulle strade per evangelizzare e servire, raggiungendo le periferie geografiche, culturali ed esistenziali. Una Chiesa povera, che privilegi i poveri, diventando la loro voce, per superare l’indifferenza egoista di coloro che hanno di più e non sanno condividere. Una Chiesa che dia una giusta attenzione e rilevanza alle donne, senza le quali, essa stessa, corre il rischio della sterilità.
Papa Francesco vive con autentica passione la dedizione a questo sogno che si porta nel cuore e vuole che tutti i credenti, ma specialmente i giovani, vivano con altrettanta intensità il suo slancio missionario. Voi giovani siete i protagonisti irrinunciabili e determinanti di questa nuova primavera. Per uscire da una cultura dello “scarto” che vi emargina e vi paralizza lasciandovi senza futuro,  dovete accendere nel vostro cuore il “fuoco” di una nuova passione per investire le vostre energie e la vostra stessa vita; si tratta di impegnarsi per cause nobili, positive e di grande valore morale, per le quali valga la pena di spendere la vita. Ve lo chiede Papa Francesco, ve lo chiede Don Bosco, ve lo chiedo io in questo ultimo messaggio, come un testamento spirituale da custodire gelosamente nel vostro cuore e da realizzare nella vita. 

La vostra giovinezza, dono per consegnare agli altri

In questi anni vi ho invitato ad accogliere la vostra giovinezza come il dono più prezioso e a orientare la vostra vita secondo un progetto vocazionale. Ho letto nei molti volti che ho incontrato la ricerca e il desiderio grande di felicità che si esprimeva nella gioia e nella festa. La fede cristiana è la risposta a questo vostro desiderio perché è annuncio di felicità radicale, promessa e conferimento di «vita eterna».
Attingere alla spiritualità salesiana è penetrare nel cuore stesso di Don Bosco, dove impegno e gioia vanno insieme, santità e allegria sono un binomio inseparabile. Fin dall’inizio del mio ministero vi ho proposto un cammino di santità semplice, allegra e serena. La spiritualità giovanile salesiana vuole portarvi all’incontro con Gesù Cristo per stringere con Lui una relazione di amicizia e di fiducia. Vi ho indicato sempre la Chiesa come il luogo scelto e offerto da Cristo per incontrarlo e ascoltare la sua Parola. Solo la sua presenza discreta stimola la vostra libertà a educare la mente, il cuore e la volontà. A Lui basta un piccolo segno di fiducia per dirvi con tanta tenerezza: «Venite e state con me, voi che siete assetati di felicità e affamati di cose belle e vere che fanno crescere la vita. Venite, voi che siete stanchi, scoraggiati, depressi. Voi che soffrite nel vostro corpo, nel vostro spirito, nel profondo del vostro cuore».
Ascoltate, cari giovani, le sue parole che scendono lentamente, consolanti dentro di voi. Esse diventano nell’Eucaristia sangue che vi dà vita nuova, carne della vostra carne. E’ una nuova vita che si nutre di preghiera, di comunione e di servizio. E’ una nuova vita percepita e vissuta come vocazione, come missione, come dedizione fedele e disponibilità totale verso gli altri. Ascoltate l’accorato appello di Papa Francesco a tutta la Chiesa: «Usciamo, usciamo ad offrire a tutti la vita di Gesù Cristo!». Come resistere a questa chiamata? E’ un appello che ha tutta l’intensità e la passione del «Da mihi animas!» di Don Bosco. La vostra generosità giovanile non può che sussultare e lasciarsi scuotere da questo grido, abbandonando una fede timida, rattrappita dalla paura e poco incline a testimoniare.
Voi siete chiamati a vivere una fede che si manifesta come profezia, come certezza di essere amati da Dio fino a mettere in lui la vostra unica sicurezza. Nel suo nome potete rischiare tutto, senza lasciarvi intimorire da niente e da nessuno, senza lasciarvi condizionare da altre visioni del mondo, senza accontentarvi di una vita mediocre.
L’invito di Papa Francesco per voi giovani è di partire senza paura per servire il mondo, arricchirlo del dono di Cristo e del Vangelo. A voi affida la convinzione della reale possibilità di cambiare il mondo, perché Gesù Risorto è con noi, tutti i giorni, fino alla fine dei tempi, e fa nuove tutte le cose: «Una fede autentica implica sempre un profondo desiderio di cambiare il mondo, di trasmettere valori, di lasciare qualcosa di migliore dopo il nostro passaggio sulla terra» (EG,183).

Amatissimi giovani.

Congedandomi da voi vi affido queste parole che sgorgano dal mio cuore di padre. Vi ho sempre amati e continuerò ad amarvi ricordandovi tutti i giorni al mio e vostro amico Gesù. Perciò mi sento di fare mie le parole del nostro amato Don Bosco: “Fino all’ultimo respiro della mia vita sarà per voi, miei cari giovani”. Chiedo anche a voi il dono della vostra preghiera perché continui a servire la Chiesa e la Famiglia Salesiana con fedeltà e amore.

Vi affido a Maria, nostro aiuto, modello di santità vissuta con coerenza e totalità, stella della nuova evangelizzazione. Vi accompagni sempre con tenerezza di Madre in tutti i momenti della vostra vita. Vi aiuti a dare bella testimonianza di comunione, di servizio, di fede ardente e generosa, di giustizia e di amore verso i poveri, perché la gioia del Vangelo arrivi a tutti i giovani e nessuna periferia sia priva della sua luce.

Message to the Youth of the Salesian Youth Movement 2014
Dream big and follow your dreams
with joy, enthusiasm and conviction

My Beloved Young People,

I cannot hide my excitement in writing to you my last message as the Rector Major. I wish that my words reach your hearts to tell you that I have always loved you and will continue to do so. You are the center of my life, my prayer and my work. You are my joy, my source of inspiration and hope for the present and for the future that God holds for me.

Thank you for the love you have always shown me, for your prayers that have supported me in the difficult moments of these years of my service. I see your faces aglow  with the joy of living and believing, and at the same time clouded by an uncertain future. I do feel and share your hopes and sufferings which I read in your eyes. During these 12 years of ministry as the successor of Don Bosco, I have lived many unforgettable moments with you, such as the World Youth Day in Sydney, in Madrid, in Rio de Janeiro, and at the various meetings of the Salesian Youth Movement in the Provinces, Youth Fests, and camps at Colle Don Bosco and many other places. They were indeed intense moments of the touch of the Holy Spirit, of experiencing our spirit of communion and spirituality. They were also moments of true sharing and brotherhood which have made us grow together in our love for Jesus, the Church, and Don Bosco.

Thank you, my dear young people, for your presence which reveals the love of God, for the freshness and the enthusiasm you have shared in these meetings and for the joy that you have given me. With a father’s heart I will continue to love you and I want to invite you to face your future with hope. God does not abandon us, but continues to give us many strong signs of his love. 

Pope Francis – a sign of God’s love for His Church

With great joy and amazement we witness today a new springtime announced for the Church and for the world itself. The prophets of doom who predicted the winter and the decadence of the Church, today are forced to rethink. This new breeze, a gift of the Holy Spirit, has found expression in the face and the heart of Pope Francis. His humble, simple and smiling presence reveals his interior life. He is a highly integrated person and his gestures, attitudes and thoughts are all focussed on the Lord Jesus, the Word of God who is the embodiment of goodness, tenderness and mercy.

We are struck intensely by this Pope, so sweet and at the same time, a rock-like person whose values, moral strength, freedom of speech and action and his enlightening prophetism are solidly anchored on a convergent point. This unifying point of his person is also a dream and a project of the largest scale.
 
What is this dream that has attracted Pope Francis and is contagiously attracting so many young people? It is the vision of a Church free from spiritual worldliness, and the temptation to retreat into its institutional enclosure; a Church free from bourgeois mentality, inward looking narcissism, clericalism and male chauvinism. It is a Church that is truly incarnated in this world, shining in the poor and the suffering people as an open home for all humanity. In his heart there is a great desire to make it a Church that welcomes everyone, irrespective of the diversity of cultures, races, traditions and religious beliefs, a Church that goes out on the streets to evangelize and to serve, reaching out to the geographical, cultural and existential peripheries. It is a poor Church, which privileges the poor, making their voices heard, to overcome the selfish indifference of those who have plenty but are unwilling to share. He dreams of a Church that gives due importance to women without whom the church herself would risk infertility.

Pope Francis is passionately dedicated to this dream and he wants all believers, especially the young people, to live the same dream with missionary zeal. You young people are the indispensable heroes of this new spring. To get out of a use-and-throw culture that marginalizes and paralyzes you with no future, you have to set your hearts on fire, and passionately invest your energes again in your own lives. This implies that you strive for positive, noble causes of great moral values, for which it is worth expending your life. Pope Francis and Don Bosco ask this of you. I too, in this my last message, give you this as my testament to treasure in your hearts and to accomplish in your lives.

Your youth, a gift to donate to others

In these years I have invited you to treat your youth as a precious gift, and to direct your life according to a clear vocation plan. During my meetings and celebrations with you, I have seen clearly the great quest and longing for happiness in your faces. The Christian faith is the real answer to your desire, because it alone is the message of fundamental happiness, the promise and the gift of “life eternal”.

Drawing on the Salesian spirituality implies entering into the very heart of Don Bosco, where commitment and joy go together, and where holiness and happiness are inseparable. From the beginning of my ministry, I have proposed to you a very simple, cheerful and serene holiness. The Salesian Youth Spirituality aims to help you to meet and establish a friendship of trust with Jesus Christ. I have always maintained that the Church is the right place chosen by Christ for meeting him and listening to His Word. Only his discreet presence can stimulate your freedom and educate your mind, heart and will. A wee sign of trust from you is enough for him to tell you tenderly: “Come and stay with me, you who are thirsty and hungry for happiness and true good things that make life grow. Come, you who are tired, discouraged and depressed, you who suffer in your body, in your spirit and in the depths of your heart.”

Listen, my dear young people, to His words which come into you with a gentle consolation. In the Eucharist they become your own flesh and  blood giving you new life. It is a new life that is nourished by prayer, fellowship and service. Its a new life understood and lived as a vocation, mission, faithful dedication and total availability to others. Listen to the heartfelt appeal of Pope Francis to the whole Church: “Let us go out, go out to offer to everyone the life of Jesus Christ!” How could you resist this call? It’s an appeal that contains the same intensity and the passion of the “Da mihi animas,” of Don Bosco. Your youthful generosity cannot but exult and passionately embrace this appeal, by getting rid of a weak and shrinking faith that cripples all energy needed for a witnessing life.

You are called to live a faith that manifests itself as prophecy, as the certainty of being loved by God so as to make him your only security. In his name you can risk all, without letting yourselves be intimidated by anything or anyone, without being influenced by other attractions of the world and without settling down for a mediocre life.

The invitation of Pope Francis for you is to go out without fear to serve the world, to enrich it with the gift of Christ and his Gospel. He places his confidence in you for really changing the world, because the Risen Jesus is with you, all the time and until the end of time, and makes all things new. “An authentic faith always implies a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values and to leave something better after our passage on the earth “(EG, 183).

Most beloved young people,

As I take leave of you, I entrust you with these words flowing from my fatherly heart. I have always loved you and will continue to do so and remind you to Jesus, your friend and mine. So I wish to make my own the words of our beloved Don Bosco: “Unto my last breath, my life will be for you, my dear young people!” . I also ask you for your prayers that I may continue to serve the Church and the Salesian Family with fidelity and love.

I entrust you to Mary Our Help, the model of holiness,  who lived her life with consistency and completeness as the star of new evangelization. May she always accompany you with her maternal tenderness in all the moments of your life. May she transform you into beautiful witnesses of communion, of service, of generous and ardent faith, of justice and of love for the poor, so that, the joy of the Gospel message may reach all of the young people and that no corner of the world may be deprived of its light.
