Blackout di Wikipedia contro la legge antipirateria
Washington, 16-01-2012Jimmy Wales, il fondatore di Wikipedia, ha annunciato su Twitter che la versione in inglese dell'enciclopedia online chiuderà per 24 ore, in protesta contro la proposta di legge antipirateria all'esame del Congresso americano, conosciuta come Sopa (Stop online piracy act).Anche Google e Facebook potrebbero oscurare i propri siti come forma di protesta. Il blackout deciso da Wikipedia, che dovrebbe durare 24 ore a partire dalla mezzanotte di mercoledì 18, ha già avuto l'adesione di siti come Reddit e Boing Boing.

Il provvedimento limiterebbe, secondo la Casa Bianca, "la libertà di espressione". "Così Obama ha gettato tutto il suo peso sui padroni si Silicon Valley che minacciano tutti i creatori di software con la pirateria, un semplice furto", ha scritto Murdoch su Twitter, chiamando a raccolta i giganti del software come Microsoft, le 'major' di Hollywood (la "20th Century Fox" fa parte del suo gruppo) e le case discografiche.
Contro la proposta di legge, lo scorso mese hanno scrito al governo Usa una lettera. Tra i firmatari i fondatori di Netscape, Google, Twitter, Yahoo, YouTube, eBay, e Wikipedia. Se il provvedimento passasse, affermano, "darebbe al governo americano il potere di censurare il web ricorrendo alle stesse tecniche impiegate da Cina e Iran".La Casa Bianca aveva chiarito che "mentre crediamo che la pirateria online dai siti stranieri rappresenti un grave problema che richiede una seria risposta legislativa, non sosterremo una legislazione che riduca la libertà di espressione, aumenti i rischi per la cyber-sicurezza, o blocchi la dinamiche e le innovazioni globali di Internet. Ogni sforzo per combattere la pirateria online deve considerare anche il rischio della censura online su attività legali e non deve fermate l'innovazione delle nostre società dinamiche, grandi e piccole che siano".
