Interview with Boduf Songs

I tuoi primi lavori sono essenzialmente opere di slow-folk acustico. How Shadows Chase The Balance e This Alone Above All Else In Spite Of Everything sono invece più complessi e sofisticati; come mai hai deciso di arricchire le tue musiche?Quando ho cominciato a suonare questo genere, volevo che all'ascoltatore sembrasse di sentire una sola persona in una stanza... perché in fondo la mia musica era proprio questo. Dopo i primi album ho iniziato a preoccuparmi meno di tutto ciò, e ho semplicemente suonato quello che mi sentivo senza preoccuparmi di come la gente l'avrebbe percepito. Non mi importa se la gente pensa che Boduf Songs sia una band piuttosto che una persona. Ovviamente, questo mi ha aperto un mondo di possibilità diverse in termini di suono e sperimentazione.
Quali ritieni che siano la tua miglior canzone ed il tuo miglior album?
Geeesù! Penso davvero che spetti a qualcun'altro questa decisione! Personalmente, non pubblicherei mai qualcosa di nuovo se non lo ritenessi migliore di ciò che ho fatto in precedenza.
Quali sono le tue influenze? C'è qualche autore che raccomandi particolarmente?
Recentemente ho visto un film davvero sorprendente chiamato "...e ora parliamo di Kevin": estremamente dark eppure bellissimo, talvolta ridicolo ma senza essere esagerato, può sembrare un ossimoro ma non lo è. Sono fortunato a fare il mestiere che faccio, visto che posso ascoltare con le cuffie vari audiolibri durante il giorno. Recentemente ho apprezzato molto "Confessioni di un mentalista" di Derren Brown e "Dio non è grande" di Christopher Hitchens.
Ah, quindi oltre ad essere musicista, pittore e videomaker (consiglio vivamente di dare un'occhiata ai suoi video e ai suoi dipinti, n.d.a.), hai pure qualche tipo di occupazione "normale"!
Oh sì, certo! Mi piacerebbe fare abbastanza soldi con queste cose, ma difficilmente ne guadagno qualcosa. Lavoro in una libreria universitaria. Adoro stare in mezzo ai libri, e mi permette di pagare (quasi) tutte le bollette.
Recentemente la Denovali ha pubblicato l'album di debutto di Infinite Light Ltd. Com'è nata questa collaborazione con Amundson e Baker? Sei contento del risultato? Avrà un seguito?Sono abbastanza contento del risultato di quel progetto, ma non estasiato. Per me è difficile lavorare con altre persone. Immagino di essere una sorta di megalomane. Questo non vuol dire che io pensi sempre di avere le idee migliori o che altro, ma se io credo che qualcosa potrebbe essere fatta meglio allora mi preparo a lavorarci su fino a quando non mi soddisferà completamente. Quindi lavorare con altri è un metodo di lavoro a cui non sono abituato, ma ho imparato comunque molto da questo progetto.A questo punto non possiamo sapere se ci sarà un altro album degli Infinite Light Ltd. Potrebbe essere. Se ci sarà, probabilmente sarà parecchio diverso dal primo.
Come avete strutturato il processo compositivo?
Ognuno iniziava una canzone e mandava i risultati agli altri affinchè ci aggiungessero un'altra traccia. Lavorare in questo modo conduce a particolari tipi di strutture, e lottavo contro questo metodo perché non lo sentivo un vero passo avanti per me. Non credevo che mi aiutasse a migliorare... probabilmente avrei dovuto comunicare questi pensieri a Nathan e Aidan, invece che portare le cose avanti cercando di dare un significato al mio contributo.
Cosa pensi della scena slowcore /drone-folk contemporanea?
In realtà sono generi che non ascolto più di tanto.
L'anno scorso hai viaggiato attraverso l'Italia per il tour: cosa pensi del nostro paese?
Penso che il vostro paese sia bellissimo! Ci vediamo alla prossima!

Your first albums and EPs are essentially an acoustic slow folk thing. But How shadows... and This alone... are more complex and sophisticated; why did you decide to enrich your sound? 
When I first started making this music I wanted it to sound like one person in a room, because that's what it was. After the first couple of releases I was less concerned with that, and just did whatever I felt like without much consideration of how its perceived - if people think it's a band or one person, it doesn't matter, and that obviously opens up a world of possibilities in terms of sounds and experiments and whatnot..
What do you think is your best song and album? And why?
Jeez. I think that's really up to other people to decide. For me personally, I wouldn't put anything new out if i didn't think it was better than what I'd done before.
Which are the authors that influeced you most?
My favourite film that I've seen recently was "We Need To Talk About Kevin" which was pretty amazing. Extremely dark but very beautiful, sometimes ridiculous but without being overstated, which sounds oxymoronic but isn't.
I'm lucky with my job, in that I can listen to audiobooks on headphones all day. A couple I enjoyed recently are "Confessions of a Conjurer" by Derren Brown, and "God is not Great" by Christopher Hitchens.
Recently Denovali published the debut album of Infinite light ltd. How this collaboration with Amundson and Baker was born? Are you happy about the result? Will it have got a sequel?
I was fairly happy with the result of that project, but not ecstatic. Working with other people is difficult for me - I guess I can be somewhat of a megalomaniac. That doesn't mean that I always think I have the best ideas or anything, but if I think something could be better then I'm prepared to work on it until I think it's as good as it can be. So its a kind of discipline that I'm not very used to, its been a very long time since I worked with other people in this way, and I learned a lot from this project. At this point we're not sure if there'll be another record. Maybe. If it does happen there's a good chance it'll be quite different to the first one.
How does your composing process work? And how did it work for the Infinite light stuff? 
With Infinite Light we each started a song then sent the results to the next person to add another layer. Working in this way leads to a particular type of structure, and I was fighting against that because it didn't feel very progressive to me. I don't think that was a very helpful way for me to be looking at it, and I probably should have communicated these thoughts to Aidan and Nathan instead of trying to shift things around by means of my contributions.
You are a musician, a video maker (by the way, your Youtube channel is great) and a pianter. Have you got some kind of daily "normal" job or are you just a 360° artist? 
Oh yes, I most definitely have a normal job. I'd love to make enough money from other things to get by, but I get hardly any income from that. I work in a university library. I like being around books, and it pays the bills. Most of them.
What do you think about the contemporary slowcore/drone-folk/ethereal scene? 
Not really something I listen to very much.
Recently you have traveled through Italy for the Boduf Songs tour. What do you think about our country?
