Come inizia la storia artistica di Aunia Kahn?
Ero tremendamente creativa, come la maggior parte dei bambini, e la creatività è stata parte integrante dei miei anni di formazione, ma avevo abbandonato l’idea che la creatività potesse diventare una carriera. Inoltre, era un’idea così strana che non mi era neanche passata per la mente quando ho iniziato a pensare a una scelta di carriera. Questo finché non ho ceduto alla malattia che mi ha trascinata su un percorso di totale distruzione di massa, caos e nessuna diagnosi per oltre un decennio, che mi ha riportata all’arte, in modo da trovare un po’ di pace e conforto nel caos della mia vita. È sempre stata una cosa molto personale, ma una volta condivisa pubblicamente e dopo la mia prima mostra ho scoperto che ha aiutato gli altri a sentirsi legati, ha toccato delle vite. È stata una piacevole sorpresa capire come l’arte, anche quella più dark, può unire le persone in un nuovo linguaggio di scoperta del sé. Ho trovato la mia tribù.
As the story begins artistic Aunia Kahn?
I was tremendously creative like most children and creativity was an integral part of my formative years, however I abandoned the idea that creativity could be utilized in a career. Plus, it was such a foreign idea that it was not even a passing thought as I started to think about a career choice. It was not until I succumbed to an illness that took me down a path of total mass destruction, chaos and being undiagnosed with no answers for over a decade that drew me back into art so I could find some peace and solace in the chaos of my life circumstances. It’s always been very personal, yet once I shared it publicly and had my first exhibition I found that it helped others feel connected and touched lives. It was pleasantly surprising to learn about how art, even how really dark art can bring people together in a whole new language of self-discovery. I found my tribe.

Il mio stile unisce molte discipline che mi permettano sempre di disegnare, costruire e combinare dei personaggi, dei luoghi inesistenti, sogni, illusioni, paure e favole in creazioni nuove fondendo elementi di arte classica a quella contemporanea. Il mio lavoro viene spesso paragonato a dei fotogrammi che nascondono lunghe storie all’interno delle loro immagini.
Describe your style.
My styles combining many disciplines where I invariably designs, builds, and executes characters, non-existent places, dreams, illusions, fears and fables into creations melding elements of classical and contemporary art. It’s often compared to movie-like stills hiding away long stories within their visuals.

Cosa provi mentre crei?
Mi sento molto libera quando creo arte, è qualcosa di molto liberatorio. È un dono essere in grado di fare qualunque cosa con le mani o qualsiasi altra parte del corpo, a prescindere dalla tua persona. Essere un creatore è magico.
How do you feel as you create?
I feel very liberated when I create art, it’s something very freeing. It’s a gift to be able to make anything with your hands or any other part of the body no matter who you are. Being a creator is magical.

C’è una storia particolare dietro ogni tuo progetto?
Facendo tanti progetti dall’arte alla fotografia, lavorando come podcaster e proprietaria di una galleria, pubblicando libri e così via non c’è una storia vera e propria, tranne quella di creare e fare in modo di lasciarsi tutto alle spalle, e di ispirare gli altri a fare ciò che si ama e a non mollare mai i loro sogni.
There is a special story behind your projects?
With doing so many projects from art to photography, being a podcaster and a gallery own, publishing books and so forth there is no real story, but the story to create and make things to leave behind and to inspire others to do what they love and never give up on their dreams.

Donna. La tua arte ha in prevalenza figure femminili, darkgotiche, parlaci di questa tua scelta.
Quando ho iniziato a fare arte, non mi sono mai davvero soffermata a pensare ai temi e su cosa creare. Venivo da un periodo di malattia e avevo bisogno di un soggetto, che il più delle volte sono io perché sempre accessibile. Nel complesso, sento che l’oscurità è il mio lavoro, che nasce da un luogo di sofferenza, ma c’è sempre qualcosa di speranzoso in ogni lavoro. Ho sempre apprezzato il mix di luce e buio.
Woman. Your art has mostly female figures, darkgotiche, tell us about this selection.
When I started to make art, it was never really a thought about the subjects and what to create. I was coming from a place of illness and needed a subject matter, which happen to by myself on most occasions because I was accessible. Overall, I feel the darkness is my work comes from a place of suffering, but there is always something hopeful in each piece of work. I have always enjoyed the mix of light and dark.

La fotografia, è venuta prima, dopo o in contemporanea con la pittura?
Ho portato in giro per un certo tipo di macchina fotografica da quando ero piccola. La mia prima macchina fotografica è stata una Kodak blu e gialla che ha preso 110 pellicole. Da adulta, la pittura è venuta per prima come carriera professionale, le fotografie sono state spesso utilizzate come punti di riferimento, ma non da sole. Tuttavia, dopo che sono uscita dall’ospedale, nel 2012, ho passato molto più tempo con la mia Nikon a lavorare attraverso il processo di guarigione, e scattando una serie di foto sulla base di questi processi. È stato un momento di scoperta personale che mi ha fatto innamorare della natura minimalista della forma umana, degli oggetti e delle emozioni.
The photograph, came before, after or simultaneously with the painting?
I have been carrying around some type of camera since I was a kid. My first camera was a blue and yellow Kodak that took 110 film. As an adult, painting came first as a professional career, the photographs were often used as reference shots but nothing that was stand-alone. However after I got out of the hospital in 2012 I spent a lot more personal time with Nikon working though the healing process and doing photo series based on these processes. It was a personal discovery moment that made me fall in love with the minimalistic nature of the human form, props and emotion.

The artist works in virtue of an inner need, sometimes without considering the audience, following its own expressive need. You create just for yourself or for those who will look at your work?
Personally I have never created for the viewer. My journey as an artist and creator is for myself and if other people enjoy it then it’s a bonus for me.

Cosa pensi dell’arte digitale?
Amo l’arte digitale; penso che sia la fotografia del 21° secolo. Dal momento che per anni i fotografi non sono stati considerati dei “veri” artisti e ora abbiamo musei dedicati solo alla fotografia. Sento che per il digitale sarà lo stesso. Così tante persone ne parlano, perché è così nuovo, ma è un mezzo meraviglioso.
What do you think of digital art?
I love digital art; I think it’s the photography of the 21st century. Since for years photographers were not considered “real” artists and now we have museums dedicated just to photography. I feel digital will be the same. So many people talk down about it because it’s so new, but it’s a gorgeous medium.

Quali artisti hanno maggiormente influenzato il tuo modo di fare arte?
La mia vita non è mai stata influenzata da altri artisti, io sono molto più ispirata dalla letteratura e dalla musica. Amo l’arte, raccolgo l’arte e mi sento arte, ma non ne sono ispirata.
Which artists have influenced your way of making art?
My life has never really been influenced by other artists, I am much more inspired by literature and music. I love art, I collect art and I feel art but I am not often inspired by it.

Puoi anticiparci qualcosa sui tuoi progetti futuri?
Grazie per avermelo chiesto. Sto lavorando per l’allestimento di 2 mostre personali nel 2016, sto mettendo insieme mostre collettive internazionali di 2015/16 al mio spazio, l’Alexi Era Gallery, e sto lavorando su un progetto per un libro con la mia casa editrice, la Lokreign, dal titolo “Un’Epidemia in Retrospettiva”, con la collaborazione di molti artisti e dei loro viaggi, insieme al mio 4° libro di fotografia/poesia e il mio primo libro d’arte, mentre cerco di tenere il passo con il sito web e il podcast di “Create & Inspire”. E sì, riesco anche a dormire.
Can you tell us something about your future projects?
Thank you for asking. I am working towards 2 solo exhibitions in 2016, putting together international group exhibitions for 2015/16 at my space Alexi Era Gallery, working on a book project with my publishing house Lokreign Publishing entitled “An Epidemic in Retrospective” featuring many artists and their journeys along with finish my 4th photography/poetry book and my first art book while trying to keep up with the Create & Inspire website and Podcast. And yes, I do sleep
