It's time for Africa ! - two continents in 20 minutes

Eccoci tornati ai nostri viaggi. Mi mancava già un po' rivangare le vecchie foto scattate in giro per l'Europa e (sorpresa!) non solo.
Here we are back to our travels. I missed it already digging up old photos taken around Europe and (surprise!) not only there.

Tarifa, come vi dicevo, è la punta estrema dello stretto di Gibilterra. Da ciò ne deriva che disti solo pochi kilometri dal Marocco e che quest’ultimo sia facilmente raggiungibile via mare partendo da Tarifa.
Tarifa, as I said, is the extreme tip of the Strait of Gibraltar. From this it follows that it's only a few miles from Morocco. So it is easily accessible by sea starting from Tarifa.

Una delle cose più belle fatte in quei giorni è stato infatti visitare Tangeri. La mia amica Chiara era già stata a Marrakech (quanto vorrei anch’io!) e quindi ha trovato Tangeri, in confronto, molto meno suggestiva. Tuttavia per chi il Marocco restava un mondo inesplorato, visitarlo anche per poche ore è stato davvero affascinante.
Purtroppo abbiamo fatto pochissime fotografie quel giorno, ma ci era stato sconsigliato di portare con noi oggetti di valore. Io avevo direttamente lasciato a casa tutto (io sono una che perde la roba...) e così vi lascio qualcuna che ha fatto la mia migliore amica Carolina. Spero vi siano almeno in parte utili a scopo illustrativo!

One of the best things done in those days was in fact go to Tangier. My friend Chiara had been in Marrakech (as I would like too!) and so she found Tangier, in comparison, much less impressive. However for those Morocco remained an unexplored world, to visit it for a few hours was really fascinating.
Unfortunately we took very few photos that day, because we were advised not to bring valuables with us. I had left at home everything (I am the kind of person who loses his things ...) and so I leave you now the pictures made ​​my best friend Carolina. I hope those will be at least partially useful for illustrative purposes!

Per andare a Tangeri avevamo adottato una soluzione del tipo pacchetto ‘nave + pullman con visita guidata + pranzo ’ spendendo solo 75 euro. Io credo che siano stato soldi benissimo investiti anche perché questo ci permetteva di accedere al Marocco con la sola carta di identità – non avendo progettato questa gita,  quasi nessuna di noi aveva con sé il passaporto.
Il viaggio in nave dura circa 20 minuti (qui trovate alcune info) e la visita sarà durata 4 ore circa. La guida è necessaria per girare in sicurezza e per avere un’idea generica del luogo in così poco tempo.

To go to Tangier we adopted a package type solution ship with a guided tour + bus + lunch' spending only 75 euros. I think they have been money well invested because this allowed us to go toMorocco with only the identity card - not having planned this trip,almost none of us was carrying a passport.
The boat trip takes about 20 minutes (here are some info - in italian, but I found just this) and the visit will be about 4 hours. The guide is necessary to shoot safely and have a general idea of the place in such a short time.
In questo modo, in un giorno abbiamo visto: la medina - bellissima- , il mercato, le vie del centro, un fachiro (il serpente incantato esiste davvero!!), i cammelli (è possibile anche cavalcarlo – io ho evitato), i quartieri “alti” – una sorta di Beverly Hills marocchina (molto poco interessante), un negozio di tappeti con tanto di presentazione dei tappeti e della storia dei tappeti (io che adoro la fantasia cachemire, stavo impazzendo per un copridivano)(però poi il proprietario ha cercato di vendermi al figlio e sono scappata…), un erboristeria, sempre con presentazione (entrambe in italiano), molto interessante, provando tutte le essenze, le creme, i saponi, gli olii ecc (io e le amiche abbiamo fatto man bassa di olio d’Argan per i capelli e sapone allo zolfo per la pelle impura a prezzi stracciati), un ristorante tipico in cui abbiamo pranzato con tutto il gruppo (sicuramente sarà stato un posto molto molto commerciale però si è stati bene), assaggiando anche lo squisito tè alla menta – che incredibilmente, pur essendo caldissimo, disseta più di ogni altra cosa!

In this way, we have seen in a day: the beautiful medina, the market, the streets of downtown, a fakir (the snake magic really does exist!), Camels (you can also ride it - I have avoided), the uptown - a sort of Moroccan Beverly Hills (not very interesting), a carpet shop complete with a presentation of the history of carpets and rugs (I love the cashmere pattern, I was going crazy for a antimacassar) (but then the owner tried to sell me to his son and I ran away ...), a herbal medicine shop, always with the presentation (both in Italian), very interesting. Here we were free to try all the essences, creams, soaps, oils, etc. (my friend and I had shopped Argan oil to our hair and brimstone soap to purify our skin for ridiculous prices), a typical restaurant where we had lunch with the whole group (certainly has been a very very commercial one but has been fine), sampling also the delicious mint tea - and incredibly, despite being very hot, it relieves more than anything else!

Cosa da tenere bene in mente mentre si fanno acquisti in Marocco è la loro usanza nel contrattare. Bisogna stare molto attenti anche perché sono abilissimi commercianti e non tutti non si approfittano dell’ingenuità del turista forestiero. Bisogna tenere presente che il primo prezzo che viene detto può essere più che dimezzato se ci si mette d’accordo con il commerciante. All’ultimo rinunciare può essere una buona tattica per far diminuire ancora il prezzo. Comprare cumulativamente aiuta poi il forfait – che piace molto.

A thing that should to keep in mind is that while you go shopping in Morocco is a custom of theirs to bargain over. You have to be very careful because they are highly skilled traders and some of them take advantage of the naivety foreign tourists Keep in mind that the first price that the merchant said can be more than halved if you put in agreement with him. To give up buying at the last minute can be a good tactic to bring down the price further. If you buy cumulatively you could promote the forfeit - which is much appreciated.

location: Tangier, Moroccophotograph: Carolina Franceseperiod: august 2009Di cose da prendere ce ne sono infinite: i gioielli – anche di bigiotteria o d’argento e pietre o argento e legno – sono bellissimi e possono costare anche molto poco. Le stoffe sono favolose, e il mercato è pieno di stole e sciarpe. I prodotti d’erboristeria e profumeria, come dicevo, sono molto interessanti e i prezzi sono competitivi rispetto i prodotti europei.
Ma ovviamente più di tutto è la cultura e il lo stile di vita e la peculiarità architettonica ad affascinare anche di primo acchito il turista. Per chi visita la costa andalusa questo può essere davvero un ottimo e fattibilissimo modo per passare una giornata in modo differente e arricchente.

There are endless things to take: the jewels - even bijoux or silver or silver and stone and wood - are beautiful and can cost very little. The fabrics are fabulous, and the market is full of scarves and stoles. The herbal products, and perfumes, as I said, are very interesting and the prices are competitive with European products.
But of course most of all is the culture, the lifestyle and the distinctive architecture to fascinate the visitor at first sight. For those visiting the Andalusian coast this can be a very good way to spend a day in a different and enriching way.

Certainly it is a very touristy thing, but in fact, it deserves to be done as "introduction" to those places.
