Hello Karen and welcome, it is a pleasure for us to have you as guest for your first Italian interview! We really thank you for your answers, since you are still mourning you father. We have already introduced you to our audience, but what would you like to tell about yourself to the Italian readers that did not know you already?
Thank you for inviting me. I’m a wife to a wonderful man who, after almost 30 years, still makes me laugh and mother to two beautiful daughters. I’m a former engineer and math/science teacher. I live in sunny Florida where I have a very sweet dog and two cats. In my spare time I love to read and study karate.
Ciao Karen e benvenuta, è un piacere averti come nostra ospite per la tua prima intervista italiana! Ti siamo davvero grate di averci risposto dato che sei ancora in lutto per tuo padre. Ti abbiamo già presentata al nostro pubblico, ma cosa ti piacerebbe raccontare di te stessa alle lettrici italiane che già non conoscano?
Grazie per avermi invitata. Sono sposata con un uomo magnifico, che dopo quasi trent’anni ancora mi fa ridere, e ho due belle figlie. Sono stata un ingegnere e anche un’insegnante di matematica e scienze. Vivo nella soleggiata Florida e ho un cane molto dolce e due gatti. Nel mio tempo libero amo leggere e studiare karate.
You had many different professional lives since you are an engineer and were a computer programmer: was the writer already inside you or she slowly grew in time?
I think the writer was always there. I wrote my first story when I was seven years old – a murder mystery set on Mars! But as I got older I stopped both writing and reading for pleasure. I began reading textbooks and studying math and science and there was no time for anything else. It wasn’t until after I graduated from college that I began to read again for pleasure. Reading led back to writing. Writing started as a secret hobby for me – a way to keep myself company as I travelled the world. Writing quickly became an obsession, then after about five years of writing in secret, becoming a published author became a dream. It was ten years to the month from the time I began writing as a hobby until I held my first published book in my hands.
Hai svolto diverse professioni dato che sei stata sia un ingegnere che una programmatrice di computer: la scrittrice è sempre stata dentro di te o è cresciuta con il tempo?
Penso che la scrittrice ci sia sempre stata. Ho scritto la mia prima storia quando avevo sette anni – un giallo ambientato su Marte! Ma crescendo ho smesso sia di scrivere che di leggere per il piacere di farlo. Ho iniziato a leggere libri di testo e studiare matematica e scienze e non c’era tempo per null’altro. Solo quando mi sono laureata ho ricominciato a leggere per il gusto di farlo. Leggere mi ha riportato a scrivere. All’inizio era un hobby segreto per me – una maniera per tenermi compagnia mentre viaggiavo per il mondo. In poco tempo scrivere è diventato un’ossessione, poi dopo circa cinque anni di scrittura segreta, essere pubblicata è diventato il mio sogno. Ad un mese dal decimo anniversario di quando avevo iniziato a scrivere come hobby, ho tenuto tra le mani il mio primo libro pubblicato.
I love romance – I love the relationships, the growth, and of course the happy endings! The romance came first, the suspense later. It was my first agent who said, “You have a suspenseful voice. Have you ever considered romantic suspense?” I said, “No, but I’ll give it a try.” I found my niche. I enjoy suspense – it’s like a puzzle in which the pieces are the science of forensics, the logic of police work, and the psychology of good and evil.
Tra tutti i generi di cui potevi scrivere perché il romantic suspense? Ed è stata una scelta basata sulle richieste del mercato o una richiesta della tua musa?
Io amo il romance, amo le relazioni, la crescita e naturalmente il lieto fine! Prima è arrivato il romance e dopo la suspense. Fu il mio primo agente a dirmi: “Sei dotata per la suspense. Hai mai preso in considerazione di scrivere romantic suspense?” io dissi, “No, ma ci proverò”. Avevo trovato la mia nicchia. Mi piace la suspense: è come un puzzle nel quale i pezzi sono le indagini della scientifica, la logica del lavoro della polizia, e la psicologia del bene e del male.
One of the things that strikes me the most in your novels is the perfect mix between the complexity of the police procedures and the romantic plot. A very difficult balance, it would be easy to slip one way or another, how do you get it?
Thank you! I’m not exactly sure how balance is achieved, to be honest. I do know that the suspense must fuel the romance, and vice-versa. In other words, the hero and heroine of the story are brought together because of the villain’s evil deeds. Their relationship faces challenges due to the baggage each brings and the current situation – the crime. Solving the crime must bring them closer and must drive the romance. If you take either the romance away or the villain, the story would make no sense. They are intertwined.
Una delle cose che colpisce di più nei tuoi romanzi è la miscela perfetta tra la complessità delle procedure poliziesche e la trama romantica. Un equilibrio molto difficile, poiché sarebbe molto facile scivolare in una direzione o nell’altra. Come riesci ad ottenerlo?
Grazie! Per essere onesta, non sono proprio sicura di come raggiungo questo equilibrio. Quello che so è che la suspense deve alimentare il romance e viceversa. In altre parole, l’eroe e l’eroina della storia finiscono insieme a causa dei misfatti del cattivo. Il loro rapporto affronta delle sfide a causa del bagaglio che entrambi portano nella situazione attuale: il crimine. Risolvere il crimine deve far in modo che i due si avvicinino e far progredire la parte romantica. Se dalla storia togli il romance o il cattivo la trama non ha più senso. Sono intrecciati.
I write the kind of book I’d like to read. I like a logical plot with strong characters and a menacing, believable villain who scares me. I like to be nervous about the outcome and wonder how the hero and heroine are going to defeat the bad guy. I like my science to be correct and my crimes to be gritty and intense. And as I’ve already said, I like the love story and the happy ending. I like to believe there are enough elements in my stories to draw both men and women.
I don’t know if there is “male” and “female” writing as much as there are styles that draw one gender more so than the other.
Il tuo pubblico è prevalentemente femminile ma ci sono anche degli uomini. Quando scrivi hai in mente un certo tipo di lettore nel senso di uno specifico sesso? Inoltre credi che esista un modo di scrivere “maschile” o “femminile”?
Io scrivo il tipo di libri che mi piacerebbe leggere. Mi piace una trama logica con personaggi forti ed un cattivo minaccioso e credibile in grado di spaventarmi. Mi piace essere nervosa per quello che può accadere e domandarmi come l’eroe e l’eroina sconfiggeranno il cattivo. Voglio che la parte scientifica sia corretta e che i crimini siano macabri e violenti. E come ho già detto mi piacciono le storie d’amore e i lieto fine. Mi piace credere che ci siano abbastanza elementi nelle mie storie da attrarre tanto gli uomini quanto le donne. Non so se esiste una scrittura “maschile” e una “femminile”, piuttosto esistono stili che attraggono più un sesso che un altro.
Your novels are bestsellers not only in the USA, but also in UK and Germany. Can you explain the secret of this huge success?
I don’t think I can explain it, but I’m very grateful! I do believe that readers want to see good win over evil and they get this in my novels. The hero and heroine get one another and the villain gets justice. That doesn’t always happen in real life, but readers can be confident that between the covers of my books, it will. I also try to write about situations or issues that are current and relevant with characters that are real and who readers might want to know personally. This seems to make my readers happy!
I tuoi libri sono dei bestseller non solo negli Stati Uniti ma anche in Inghilterra e in Germania. Puoi spiegarci il segreto di questo grande successo?
Non penso di poterlo spiegare, ma sono molto grata! Ritengo che i lettori vogliano vedere il bene vincere sul male ed è quello che ottengono nei miei libri. L’eroe e l’eroina si mettono insieme e il cattivo viene punito. Questo non sempre accade nella vita reale, ma i lettori possono essere sicuri che nelle pagine dei miei libri, questo accadrà. Cerco anche di scrivere su delle situazioni o dei problemi che sono attuali ed importanti con personaggi che siano reali e che i lettori potrebbero desiderare di conoscere personalmente. Questo sembra rendere i miei lettori felici!
The villain most often grows in my mind as I write the book, so there’s not usually an “inspiration.” I write villains that are frightening because they are capable, logical, and strong. The villains are not normally recognizable as bad by the other characters until it’s too late – and in real life, evil will often wear a beautiful, friendly face. I want readers to look over their shoulder and wonder, is he back there? As for scaring me, yes, they have frightened me before. The villain who frightened me the most was Sue Conway, from NOTHING TO FEAR. There were days I didn’t feel strong enough to write her scenes and I’d put them off another day. She frightened me because there was no softness in her, no compassion.
I tuoi cattivi sono tra i più tremendi di cui abbia mai letto, sono così ben descritti con le loro menti acute e deviate, che mi sembra di poterli sentire alle mie spalle. Dov’è che prendi l’ispirazione, e tu stessa hai mai avuto paura di loro?
Il cattivo la maggior parte delle volte si sviluppa nella mia mente mentre scrivo il libro, quindi generalmente non c’è una vera “ispirazione”. Scrivo cattivi che facciano paura perché sono individui capaci, logici e forti. Normalmente i cattivi non vengono riconosciuti come tali dagli altri personaggi fino a quando non è troppo tardi, e nella vita reale il male spesso indossa una facciata bella ed amichevole. Desidero che i lettori si guardino alle spalle e si chiedano: è lì dietro per caso? Circa il fatto di spaventarmi, sì, in passato mi hanno spaventato. Il cattivo che mi ha fatto più paura è stata Sue Conway, in NOTHING TO FEAR. C’erano giorni in cui non mi sentivo forte abbastanza per scrivere le sue scene e le rimandavo ad un altro giorno. Mi terrorizzava perché in lei non c’era nessuna delicatezza e nessuna compassione .
Travelling inside evil minds, like you do in your books, is not a light task for an author; you appear a very positive person Karen, how do you achieve such an impressive result without being drawn in or without being touched by such destructiveness?
It does affect me at times. When I know I have to write particularly horrific scenes, I tell my family to leave me alone for the hours I need to write. I give myself time to “come out” of the scene and become myself again and there are times it feels like I’ve left a little of myself behind.
Viaggiare all’interno di menti perverse, come fai nei tuoi romanzi, non è un’impresa facile per uno scrittore; tu sembri essere una persona molto positiva Karen, come riesci ad ottenere un risultato così notevole senza essere risucchiata dentro o senza essere toccata da una tale distruttività?
Ne vengo toccata di tanto in tanto. Quando so di dover scrivere una scena particolarmente cruda, chiedo cortesemente alla mia famiglia di lasciarmi da sola per le ore di cui ho bisogno per scrivere. Mi do il tempo di “uscire” fuori dalla scena e ridiventare me stessa, e ogni tanto sento di essermi lasciata dietro una piccola parte di me.
This is fun for me, because the Vartanians were never supposed to be a trilogy. Daniel and Susannah were never characters in my original proposal for DIE FOR ME. Simon was to have been a stand-alone villain. But as I began writing DIE FOR ME, the first Daniel scene suddenly unfolded and I knew he’d be very important. I didn’t know how important he would become, however. I never planned to leave an unanswered crime at the end of DIE FOR ME, but when I finished that book Daniel had a mystery of his own. It was then that I knew that Daniel and Susannah’s stories needed to be told.
La trilogia Vartanian è considerata uno dei tuoi capolavori, qual è il suo filo conduttore?
Lo trovo divertente perché i libri sui Vartanian non erano stati concepiti come una trilogia. Daniel e Susannah non erano dei personaggi presenti nella mia sinossi originaria di Muori per me, il cui cattivo avrebbe dovuto comparire solo in questo libro. Ma quando iniziai a scrivere Muori per me, mentre la prima scena di Daniel si dispiegava di fronte ai miei occhi, seppi che lui sarebbe stato importante. Tuttavia non sapevo quanto. Non avevo mai pianificato di lasciare un crimine irrisolto alla fine di Muori per me, ma quando terminai il romanzo Daniel aveva un mistero da risolvere per conto proprio. In quel momento seppi chele storie di Daniel e Susannah dovevano essere raccontate.
Die for me just made its debut in Italy, so we are all very curious to learn how was it born? And which is (or are) the characters that resonates the most inside you?
DIE FOR ME was actually born from several different pieces. I’d just read a time travel book, where the characters go back to medieval France. I thought, “Wouldn’t that be cool?” Until, of course, I needed running water or the television! That thought morphed to, “What if a character was obsessed with medieval times? Specifically medieval torture?” I thought on that a bit and then one day I walked into my family room where my daughter and her teenage friends were playing the video game “Final Fantasy.” They were playing the game to watch the cut scene, the animated scene that bridges one section of game play to another. They weren’t interested in the game, only in the cut scene in which the hero and heroine run romantically into each others’ arms (they were teenage girls). For a few minutes I watched, marveling at the technology required to create the scene, then found myself wondering about a cut scene which was violent. What kind of person would watch it? What kind of person would create it?
I began writing and Simon Vartanian was born.
The character that most resonates with me is Sophie. She was a fun character to create – I always wanted to explore castles and be able to speak many languages! In this book, she works in a museum and her boss makes her dress up as historical characters to lead tours. My husband was a high school history teacher while I was writing this book and he’d dress up as historical characters to teach his class. He was one of the inspirations for Sophie’s character.
Muori per me in effetti è nato da differenti pezzi. Avevo appena letto un romanzo timetravel, dove i personaggi andavano indietro nel tempo fino alla Francia medievale. E pensai, “Non sarebbe forte?” sì lo sarebbe stato naturalmente fino a quando non avessi avuto bisogno dell’acqua corrente o della televisione! Quindi il pensiero si trasformò in: “E se un personaggio fosse ossessionato dal medioevo? In particolare dalla tortura medievale?” Ci riflettei un poco su e poi un giorno entrai nel salotto mentre mia figlia e le sue amiche adolescenti stavano giocando al videogame di Final Fantasy. Stavano giocando per vedere le cut scenes, ovvero quelle scene di raccordo tra una sezione ed un’altra. Non erano interessate al gioco in sé stesso, solo a quelle scene dove l’eroe e l’eroina si gettavano romanticamente l’uno nelle braccia dell’altra (sono comunque delle ragazzine). Per qualche minuto guardai lo schermo, meravigliandomi della tecnologia necessaria per creare una scena simile, e poi mi ritrovai a rimuginare su una cut scene che fosse violenta. Che tipo di persona l’avrebbe guardata? Che tipo di persona l’avrebbe creata?
Iniziai a scrivere e Simon Vartanian era nato.
Il personaggio che più risuona dentro di me è Sophie. E’ stato un bel personaggio da creare, io ho sempre voluto esplorare castelli ed essere in grado di parlare molte lingue! In questo libro, lei lavora per un museo e il suo capo la fa vestire come un personaggio storico per fare le visite guidate. Mentre io scrivevo questo romanzo, mio marito insegnava storia in un liceo e andava a far lezione in costume. Lui è stato una delle ispirazioni per il personaggio di Sophie.
Karen you were brave having to face some really tough moments in your life and it somehow shows in your novels, adding complexity and depth to both characters and plots. In your opinion did all this experiences help you to become a better author?
I don’t know if I was brave or not. I think I just did what I needed to do to make it through some bad situations. But I like to think these experiences have made me a better author. I think they gave me insight into how humans react in various circumstances. I’ve experienced grief and fear and loss and made it through with the help of love. I try to use those experiences to get into the minds of my characters.
Karen tu sei stata coraggiosa nell’affrontare alcuni momenti davvero duri nella tua vita e questo in qualche modo traspare nei tuoi romanzi, aggiungendo complessità e profondità ai personaggi e alla trama. Ritieni che tutte queste esperienze ti abbiano aiutata a divenire un’autrice migliore?
Non so se io sia stata o meno coraggiosa. Credo di aver fatto ciò che dovevo fare per superare alcune brutte situazioni. Ma mi piace pensare che queste esperienze mi abbiano resa una scrittrice migliore. Penso mi abbiano fatto comprendere come le persone reagiscono in varie circostanze. Ho sperimentato il dolore, la paura, e la perdita e le ho superate con l’aiuto dell’amore. Cerco di usare queste esperienze per entrare nelle menti dei miei personaggi.
Life Links is important to me. It’s a collection of links to internet sites that offer information and support to those going through painful situations. Some of these issues directly link to my books, like spousal abuse and rape. Some stem from my own experiences such as cancer and grief. During every rough time I’ve been through, I’ve found comfort and strength in information and the support of others who’d been through it before I had. Life Links is intended to help others find the support they need during hard times.
Che ci puoi dire di Life Links? E’ un progetto che ti sta molto a cuore, ti piacerebbe parlarcene?
Life Links è importante per me. E’ un elenco di collegamenti a siti internet che offrono informazioni ed aiuto a coloro che stanno attraversando situazioni dolorose. Alcune di queste problematiche sono direttamente legate ai miei libri, come la violenza domestica e lo stupro. Altre si riallacciano alla mia esperienza personale come il cancro e il lutto. Durante tutti i periodi difficili che ho attraversato ho trovato conforto e aiuto nelle informazioni e nel supporto di altre persone che c’erano già passate. Life Links si propone di aiutare le persone a trovare l’aiuto di cui hanno bisogno nelle difficoltà.
You are working on a new project right now, would you tell us something about it?
I’ve just finished a book called YOU BELONG TO ME. It’s about cops and prosecutors in Baltimore, Maryland – the city of my birth. The first book is about a crime in which one person commits an assault while others watch – and do nothing. The hero is a Baltimore homicide detective, the heroine is a medical examiner who is drawn into this crime, involved in ways she cannot fathom. The villain has a very personal stake and a thirst for revenge.
Al momento stai lavorando su un nuovo progetto, ci vuoi dire qualcosa in proposito?
Ho appena finito un libro intitolato YOU BELONG TO ME. Parla di poliziotti e procuratori distrettuali a Baltimora, nel Maryland, la mia città natale. Il primo volume è incentrato su un crimine nel quale una persona aggredisce un’altra mentre la gente guarda e non fa nulla. L’eroe è un detective della Omicidi di Baltimora, l’eroina è un medico legale che sarà coinvolta in questo crimine in maniera e in misura tale che non può nemmeno immaginare. Il cattivo ha un interesse molto personale e sete di vendetta.
