How did your career as an artist start, Jeanie Tomanek? Come é iniziata la tua carriera di artista, Jeanie?

I always drew and painted as a child. I took a few art classes as a young mother and would sometimes do a painting just for fun but not very often.

Da bambina dipingevo e disegnavo. Ho preso lezioni d’arte quando ero una giovane mamma e qualche volta -non molto spesso- dipingo solo per divertimento.

Describe your style. Descrivici il tuo stile.

I think my style is a bit primitive and sometimes has an almost folk art quality. At other times it can be more like an illustration from a book. I swing from loose to tight in my figurative depictions. Because the settings are sometimes otherworldly or dreamy I suppose they could also be described as surreal.

Credo sia un po’ primitivo e talvolta ha dei connotati dell´arte popolare. In altre occasioni può essere una sorta di illustrazione per libri. Alterno raffigurazioni libere ad altre molto rigorose dato che a volte le rappresentazioni sono oniriche o immaginarie. Ritengo possano essere descritte anche come surreali.

How do you feel as you create? Come ti senti quando creai le tue opere?

When I’m creating I feel like I’m looking for an answer to a question, trying to solve a problem or meet a challenge while trying to express the emotion and imagery that are right for the theme and the concept. I love the feeling of stepping into the unknown.

Durante il processo di creazione cerco una risposta ad una domanda, provo a risolvere un problema o colgo una sfida tentando di dare espressione ad una emozione o all´immaginario calzanti rispetto ad un tema o un concetto. Adoro la sensazione di immergermi nell´ignoto.

How did you start to paint, passion or work? Come hai iniziato ? Per passione o per lavoro?

I knew I was a creative person who was happiest making something from nothing, whether writing a poem or a story, making a room beautiful or painting a picture. So although I do make money from my art and that has been important especially as a senior citizen, I paint because I love it.

Sapevo di essere molto creativa e di essere felice nel creare qualcosa dal nulla: scrivere una poesia o una storia, abbellire una stanza o dipingere un quadro. Pertanto, sebbene mi guadagno da vivere con la mia arte e ciò ha una certa rilevanza soprattutto ora da adulta, dipingo perche amo farlo.

Painting is always been your dream, or did you start “grow up”? Dipingere e´ sempre stato un tuo sogno? O ci sei arrivata gradualmente?

I always painted and made things but I took my art for granted as I worked regular jobs to help support my family and only painted occasionally. It wasn’t until I was fifty years old that I discovered that painting was what I was meant to do. I left full time work in offices and real estate and began to concentrate on learning all I could about painting. That was fifteen years ago.

Ho sempre dipinto e creato ma davo la mia arte per scontata dal momento che avevo dei lavori stabili che mi aiutavano a mantenere economicamente la mia famiglia. Solo all’età di 50 anni ho scoperto che la pittura era la mia vera vocazione. Ho abbandonato gli impieghi a tempo pieno negli uffici e ho iniziato a concentrami sull´apprendere il più possibile sulla pittura.

There is a special story behind your projects? C´e´ una storia speciale dietro i tuoi lavori?

I am especially inspired by the stories of women in general. Their strength, wisdom, their faith and their nurturing love. I want to depict the iconic woman and so I created an “Everywoman” who will tell my stories. I love myths, folklore, fairy tales as examples of feminine archetypes. I like to do allegorical paintings that will have a personal meaning to me but also speak to others.

In generale mi ispirano molto le storie delle donne. La loro forza, la loro saggezza, la loro fede e il loro amore. Volevo ritrarre una donna iconica e pertanto ho creato una “Everywoman” che racconterà le mie storie. Sono una amante di miti, folklore e favole come esempi di archetipi del femminile. Mi piace realizzare ritratti allegorici che hanno un significato personale per me ma che riescono anche a parlare ad altri.

What is your concept of art? Quale e´ la tua idea di arte?

I’m not sure there’s a short answer to that. For me it’s expressing an idea in an honest fashion that may communicate with an audience or may not. The truth and honesty of a work will reveal its beauty.

Non sono sicura che esista una risposta breve. Nel mio caso si tratta di esprimere una idea in modo onesto che possa arrivare ad un pubblico o meno. La autenticità e l’onestà di un lavoro ne costituiscono la sua bellezza.

The artist works in virtue of an inner need, sometimes without considering the audience, following its own expressive need. You create just for yourself or for those who will look at your work? Le creazioni artistiche scaturiscono da una esigenza interna e talvolta non considerano il pubblico seguendo un proprio bisogno espressivo. Crei per te stessa o per chi guardera´ le tue opere?

I do both. I want to reach someone with what I have to say because that is a measure of whether I’ve succeeded. I wish I could think less about pleasing someone else but my reality is that I have to make a painting that succeeds for me personally and also may have a universal appeal.

Per entrambi i motivi. Voglio sicuramente raggiungere il mio pubblico con quanto voglio esprimere in quanto questo misura la mia riuscita o meno nell´intento. Vorrei tener in minor conto l’altrui compiacimento ma la realtà é che devo realizzare un quadro che valga per me stessa ma che abbia anche un significato universale.

Which artists have influenced your way of making art?

Van Gogh, Caravaggio, Modigliani, Richard Diebenkorn, Paula Rego, Remedio Varos, Georgia O’Keefe, Joan Mitchell, Rothko, So many!!!

Can you tell us something about your future projects? Puoi parlarci dei tuoi progetti futuri?

I have been contemplating a series of paintings that will deal especially with sexuality and aging. I’m thinking of calling it “Sex and the Senior Girl” . I have to be brave and not be prudish to do this. I don’t expect them to be commercially appealing but who knows?

Ho lavorato su una serie di dipinti sul tema sessualità e invecchiamento. Sto pensando di chiamarla “Sex and the Senior Girl”. Devo essere coraggiosa e non troppo pudica nel farlo. Non penso che avanno particolarmente successo da un punto di vista delle vendita, ma chi può dirlo?
