Siete on the road per la bella e assolata California e volete visitare qualcosa di insolito? Allora andate a Garden Grove!!
Durante la preparazione del mio tour del 2012 ho infatti scoperto che a soli 7,5km da Disneyland sorge una cattedrale protestante che sembra essere la più grande costruzione in vetro del mondo: la Christal Cathedral.
Il Reverendo Robert Schuller, dopo aver fondato la sua congregazione cristiana protestante nel 1950, ha commissionato questa costosissima e imponente chiesa molto moderna all’architetto Philip Johnson che l’ha costruita tra il 1977 e il 1980.
Per realizzarla sono state necessarie 10.000 lastre di vetro; la struttura è alta 40m, larga 63m e lunga 125m e copre una superficie di circa 30.000mq.
La chiesa ospita circa 5000 persone con 2763 posti a sedere e pare sia stata realizzata per reggere ad un terremoto di magnitudo 8.
La mia curiosità ovviamente mi ha spinto a fare la deviazione per vedere da vicino questa struttura! Sicuramente l’effetto è notevole in quanto intorno non ci sono costruzioni così alte e la si può vedere già dalla superstrada che la costeggia; all’interno ho apprezzato le fontane che fiancheggiano la navata centrale e il più grande organo del mondo (con 16 mila canne e 100 registri!) costruito dai fratelli italiani Ruffatti.
Inoltre i volontari vi intrattengono gentilmente con qualche chiacchera e qualche curiosità J
La domenica al Morning service delle 9.30 o all’Evening service delle 18.00 potrete assistere ad una funzione religiosa all’interno di questa imponente struttura o all’esterno (si! direttamente dalla vostra auto!!) in quanto quando l’affluenza è alta, le sue porte di 27m vengono aperte in maniera automatizzata ;)

Reverend Robert Schuller, after the foundation of his Protestant Christian congregation in 1950, commissioned this very expensive and impressive church to the architect Philip Johnson, who built it between 1977 and 1980.
To build this church were required 10,000 sheets of glass; the structure is 40m high, 63m wide and 125m long and covers an area of about 30,000 square meters.
The church hold about 5000 people with 2763 seats and it seems to have been designed to withstand an earthquake of magnitude 8.
Thanks to my curiosity I’ve made this detour to see this structure! Certainly the effect is remarkable because there are no high buildings around and you can see it from the highway; inside I loved the fountains flanking the central nave and the largest organ in the world ( with 16000 barrels and 100 registers!) built by the Italians brothers Ruffatti.
In addition, volunteers will entertain you with chats and some curiosity J
On Sunday you can attend a religious function ( morning service at 9:30 am or evening service at 6pm) on the inside or outside (yes! directly from your car!) when its doors are opened in an automated way ;)
