La meravigliosa arte espressionista e terrena di Joseph Loughborough [ITA/ENG]

Ci sono artisti che ti colpiscono per lo stile, l’eleganza, il movimento o il significato che portano. Gli splendidi lavori di Joseph Loughborough colpiscono come una carezza e un pugno allo stomaco nello stesso momento. Il suo stile schietto, meravigliosamente calibrato e oscuro, ma vivo come una creatura pulsante anche attraverso lo schermo di un computer, è qualcosa di totalmente nuovo, bellissimo e folle, che volevamo assolutamente condividere con voi. Oltre a questo, come vedrete, è una persona assolutamente adorabile.

There are artists that strike you with their works for their style, or the elegance, the movements of the lines, or the meaning they carry on. The beautiful works of Joseph Loughborough hit you like a caress and a punch in the stomach at the same time. His outspoken style is wonderfully calibrated and dark, but is alive at the same time, as a pulsating creature which vibes goes through the screen of a computer – and is something totally new, beautiful and crazy, that we really wanted to share with you. In addition to this, as you will see, he’s an absolutely adorable person.

 Did you always knew you wanted to be an artist? What gave you the “spark” of art? 

To say a spark sounds so instant! Really it has been a slow build up of influences, incidents and stubbornness that shaped me to an artist. Since childhood i been a creative person so I guess I have always had a bearing on my compass, but I can’t say that there was a particular moment when I consciously decided to take this road. To self mythologize, I could talk about the  mummified rat my father found in our chimney and varnished, the Portsmouth shipwrecks or my grandfather’s book collection….or perhaps my mother’s watercolours? hehe…

Hai sempre saputo di voler essere un artista? Che cosa ti ha dato la “scintilla” dell’arte?

Parlare di “scintilla” suona così immediato! In realtà è stato un lento accumularsi di influenze, incidenti di percorso e testardaggine che mi hanno reso un artista. Fin da bambino sono stato una persona molto creativa, quindi credo di essere sempre stato rivolto in quella direzione, ma non posso dire che ci sia stato un momento particolare in cui ho consapevolmente deciso di prendere questa strada. Per mitologizzarmi, potrei parlare del topo mummificato mio padre ha trovato nel nostro camino e verniciato, i naufragi di Portsmouth o la collezione di libri di mio nonno… o forse sono stati gli acquerelli di mia madre? Eheh… 

In the biography on your website also talk of philosophy: besides from the quoted Kierkegaard and his concept of “Absurdity,” are there other philosophers, philosophy movements or concepts that inspire you in any way?

The often misinterpreted Nietzsche has always been a philosopher I have enjoyed. His work has so many contradictions, Nihilistic yet ultimately positive with the hint of a smile whilst articulating his observations.

Nella biografia sul tuo sito internet parli anche di filosofia: oltre al citato Kierkegaard e il suo concetto di “assurdità”; ci sono altri filosofi, movimenti filosofici o concetti, idee che ti ispirano in un qualunque modo?

Lo spesso frainteso Nietzsche è sempre stato un filosofo che ho apprezzato. Il suo lavoro ha molte contraddizioni, nichilista eppure, in fondo, positivo, con l’accenno di un sorriso mentre articola le sue osservazioni.

Since you quoted Camus too, I’ll expand my question also to writers: are there other writers that inspire you, or novels?

There are so many! I love reading and usually have quite a few books on the go at once. Perhaps this comes with age as I don’t remember being a particularly bookie person in my youth. (except for ones with lots of pictures!) Baudelaire’s writing and poetry has always been something that I regularly returned to and love to reread! Saying this my French is not that great so in fact it is probably truer to admit its certain translations of his that I find so compelling, particularly by Francis Scarf.

Dal momento che citi anche Camus, allargo la mia domanda anche agli scrittori: ci sono altri scrittori che si ispirano, o magari dei romanzi?

Ce ne sono così tanti! Amo leggere e di solito leggo anche più di un libro alla volta. Forse questo viene con l’età, perché non ricordo di essere mai stato una persona particolarmente appassionata di libri nella mia giovinezza (ad eccezione di quelli con un sacco di foto!); la scrittura e la poesia di Baudelaire sono sempre state qualcosa da cui amo tornare e che amo rileggere! Dicendo questo, devo ammettere che il mio francese non è un granché, quindi in realtà è più giusto dire che trovo alcune sue traduzioni molto avvolgenti, in particolare da Francis Scarf.

In your work I see a strong sign of the German Expressionism and I also see an imprint of Egon Schiele, who was part of Viennese Expressionism; are you very inspired by that period of history/art? Are there other artistic eras that affects you in any way?

Yes it’s true to say that Austrian and German Expressionism have been an influence. Perhaps I should also note the symbolists of a similar ilk that often ponder over. However there are many other movements and cultures that i have drawn inspiration from, I could nitpick here and there but I won’t.

Nel tuo lavoro vedo un forte segno dell’espressionismo tedesco, oltre ad un’impronta di Egon Schiele, che faceva parte dell’espressionismo viennese; sei stato molto ispirato da quel periodo della storia/dell’arte? Ci sono altre epoche artistiche che ti toccano in qualche modo?

Sì, è vero dire che l’espressionismo austriaco e quello tedesco hanno avuto una grande influenza su di me. Forse dovrei anche citare i simbolisti di genere simile. Ad ogni modo ci sono molti altri movimenti e culture da cui ho tratto ispirazione, potrei citartene uno qua e là, ma non lo farò.

If you could travel through time and work on your art in another era, which one would you choose?

What a fantastically bizarre question! My friends I’m sure would think that I would return to the Victorian period mainly because of the way I dress, but I think it would have to be into the future!

Se potessi viaggiare nel tempo e lavorare alla tua arte in un’altra epoca, quale sceglieresti?

Che domanda straordinariamente bizzarra! I miei amici penserebbero che mi piacerebbe tornare al periodo vittoriano, soprattutto per come mi vesto, ma penso che preferirei andare nel futuro!

Your style is disturbing and provocative but is not negatively overwhelming nor oppressive; despite the dark tones and the obvious nihilism, they seem paradoxically very “alive” and vibrant. Therefore I ask you: what do you want to communicate with your work?

It’s interesting you should say that, people often comment on the opposites between my personality and the initial perception of the melancholic nature of work I produce. Perhaps what is communicated in my work is more of a by-product of my personal expression, a therapeutic exorcism whilst I try and explore emotions and arrange my everyday feelings into something visual.

Il tuo stile è inquietante e provocatorio, ma non è schiacciante od opprimente in modo negativo; nonostante i toni oscuri e l’ovvio nichilismo, sembrano paradossalmente molto “vivi” e vibranti. Perciò ti chiedo: che cosa vuoi comunicare con il tuo lavoro?

È interessante che tu lo dica, la gente spesso commenta sui contrasti fra la mia personalità e la percezione iniziale della natura malinconica del mio lavoro. Forse ciò che voglio comunicare con il mio lavoro è più un sottoprodotto della mia espressione personale, un esorcismo terapeutico mentre cerco di esplorare le emozioni e trasformo i miei sentimenti di tutti i giorni in qualcosa di visivo.

Is there a story behind each of your project, a story you want to tell to your audience through your pictures?

Sometimes there is a specific intention behind a work where I have a story, or a concept and i work towards that idea. This can be a success and a failure. Its just as likely that i have tantrum half way through and I try and scribble out or erase the whole piece. This mess can then give birth to new ideas and lead me in new directions. When the piece is finished it has its own story. Perhaps this is the artists ultimate get out of jail free card to state that the audience gives their own meaning to a work, but I have always felt to dictate a meaning to a work can sterilise it.

C’è una storia dietro ognuno dei tuoi progetti, una storia che vuoi raccontare al pubblico attraverso le immagini?

A volte c’è una precisa motivazione dietro un lavoro in cui ho una storia, o un concetto, e lavoro verso quell’idea o quel concetto. Questo può essere sia un successo che un fallimento. Più o meno è come un capriccio che ho a metà strada e cerco di scarabocchiarlo fuori o di cancellare l’intero pezzo. Questo disordine può dare vita a nuove idee e mi porta in nuove direzioni. Quando il pezzo è finito, ha una storia propria. Forse questo è il lasciapassare degli artisti che affermano che il pubblico dà un significato proprio ad un lavoro, ma ho sempre pensato che dare per forza un senso a un lavoro può sterilizzarlo.

What are your favourite tools for drawing and painting? What is your relationship with the “analogical” and “digital” style of painting and drawing?

Charcoal has always been one of the most important materials in my work. This is mainly because of the speed and fluidity in which I can express myself. (also nice and cheap reality speaking)

I make ‘analogical’ work with charcoal, paper and paint, but often in the Internet world (where people cannot see the drawing in the flesh) they have mistakenly been believed to be digitally created. Of course the image has been polished in Photoshop to present it in its truest representation so perhaps we must consider all images displayed to us through a screen to be digital art. Personally speaking though i get my kicks out of physical, messy hands on creation! However, it is certain that digital art is as artistically valid as all other media. A great example of this could be the tapestries of Grayson Perry of which are created Photoshop first then machine woven.

Quali sono i tuoi strumenti preferiti per il disegno e la pittura? Qual è il suo rapporto con lo stile “analogico” e “digitale” della pittura e del disegno?

Il carbone è sempre stato uno dei materiali più importanti nel mio lavoro. Sopratutto a causa della velocità e la fluidità con cui posso esprimermi (ed è anche una realtà semplice e schietta in azione).

Faccio il lavoro “analogico” con il carbone, carta e vernice, ma spesso nel mondo di Internet (in cui la gente non può vedere il disegno in carne e ossa) sono stati erroneamente scambiati per opere digitali. Certo, l’immagine è stata pulita con Photoshop per presentarlo nella sua rappresentazione più vera, quindi forse dobbiamo considerare tutte le immagini da noi viste attraverso uno schermo per arte digitale. Anche se personalmente il mio è un lavoro fisico, con le mani sporche di lavoro! Tuttavia, è certo che l’arte digitale è artisticamente valida come tutti gli altri media. Un grande esempio di questa mia dichiarazione potrebbero essere gli arazzi di Grayson Perry, che vengono creati da Photoshop prima della tessitrice.

Your subjects are especially bodies or part of them, faces; what is your relationship with the human body?

The human Form for me is an anchor to which I can explore my creative world. It embodies all of the conditions we experience whilst plodding around this earth, mortality, emotion, sexuality, personality and all the rest of that dramatic stuff!

I tuoi soggetti sono soprattutto corpi o singole parti, volti; qual è il tuo rapporto con il corpo umano?

La Forma umana per me è un’ancora con cui posso esplorare il mio mondo creativo. Incarna tutte le condizioni che sperimentiamo durante arranchiamo intorno a questa terra: la mortalità, l’emozione, la sessualità, la personalità e tutta quella roba drammatica!

What is your concept of art?
