Today I'll tell you a story. The story of how the polo shirt was born. But first we must give a homage to who invented it, and so I' ll tell the story of the symbol of Lacoste, the Crocodile. We're in 1927. Here is what Rene Lacoste says: "The American press nicknamed me" The Crocodile " after a bet that I made with the Captain of the French Davis Cup team. He had promised me an alligator suitcase if I won a important game for the team. The American public reminded of this nickname which conveyed the tenacity I displayed on the tennis courts, as I didn't ever leave the "prey"! My friend Robert George drew for me a crocodile which was then embroidered on the blazer that I wore on the court.
In 1933, as also is written into the Lacoste stores (at least in Italy), the famous tennis player has a flashing genial idea: to face the heat of America's summer he created a garment that combined t-shirts, at the time used as underwear, and shirts, beautiful and elegant. Those made the polo.
A last curiosity: Lacoste polo is the first clothing to show a visible logo.
