Laghi della Sella - Valle Gesso

I Laghi della Sella sono tra i più grandi laghi naturali alpini della Valle Gesso.
Il Lago sottano della Sella, che occupa la vasta conca di fronte al Rifugio Dante Livio Bianco, ha una superficie di circa 107 mq ed una profondità di 15 metri.
Ha forma rotonda ed è circondato da prati e da rocce montonate alle cui spalle s'innalzano le cime del Monte Matto, della Rocca della Paur e della Gorgia Cagna.
La sua origine è glaciale ed è quel che rimane del ghiacciaio che un tempo ricopriva le pareti del Monte Matto.
Si dice che questo lago fosse il preferito dalla famiglia reale Savoia che qui veniva a pescare la trota.
La Regina Margherita amava farsi trasportare in barca su questo lago ed un remo usato per spingere la sua imbarcazione è conservato all'interno del Rifugio.
Il Lago Soprano della Sella si trova più in alto, ad un'ora e mezzo di cammino dal primo, risalendo il Vallone della Meris in direzione del Colle della Valletta.
La sua forma allungata occupa una conca di origine glaciale sostenuta da una grande bastionata di rocce rossastre.
Nelle sue acque si stagliano imponenti i profili del Monte Matto e della Rocca della Paur.

The Sella's Lakes are among the largest natural alpine lakes in the Gesso Valley.
The Sella Lower lake, which occupies the vast basin in front of the Refuge Dante Livio Bianco, has an area of about 107 square meters and a depth of 15 meters.
It has a round shape and is surrounded by meadows and glaciated knobs, behind which rise the peaks of Mount Matto, the Rocca Paur and Gorgia Cagna.
Its origin is glacial and is what remains of the glacier that once covered the walls of Mount Matto.
It is said that this lake was the favorite of the Savoia royal family, who came here to fish for trout.
Queen Margherita loved to be transported by boat on the lake and the paddle used to push his boat is already stored inside the refuge.
The Sella Upper lake is located higher. To reach it is needing to walk an hour and a half of from the first lake along the Valley of Meris in the direction of the Colle della Valletta.
Its elongated shape occupies a basin of glacial origin sustained by a great bastion of red rocks.
In its waters stand up the mountaintop profiles of the Mount Matto and the Rocca Paur.
