We advise you to rent a scooter to be free to visit all the island independently (60 € for three days).

Visto che abbiamo a disposizione ormai mezza giornata, decidiamo di visitare le spiagge nella parte nord-est.
Prima tappa: Cala Pisana
Given that we had half a day, we decided to visit the beaches in the north-east.
First stop: Cala Pisana
L’acqua sembra quella di una piscina. La spiaggia, piccola piccola, si trova in fondo ad un’insenatura. La gente del posto, e non solo, si diverte a buttarsi dalla banchina li vicino.
The water seems to be a swimming pool. The beach, very small, is located at the bottom of the bay. The locals, and not only, likes to jump from the dock nearby.
After an hour, we take the motorbike and we reach Cala Creta, a few meters from our B & B.
Ci fermiamo rapidamente, giusto per dare un’occhiata, scegliendo invece la spiaggia di Mare Morto, subito dietro l’angolo. Chiamata così per via delle sue calme acque, questa splendida insenatura rocciosa si caratterizza soprattutto per un’acqua cristallina.
Si tratta per lo più di scogli e rocce ma il paesaggio è davvero molto bello.
We stopped quickly, just to take a look, and decided to stop at the beach of Mare Morto, just around the corner. So named because of its calm waters, this beautiful rocky cove is mainly characterized by crystal-clear water.
It is mostly rocks but the scenery is really beautiful.
Non contenti, abbiamo deciso di cambiare ancora una volta spiaggia. Questa volta, tocca a Cala Francese giusto per una rapida occhiata, scegliendo invece Cala Maluk che si raggiunge percorrendo la strada che costeggia l’aeroporto. Si tratta di un’ampia insenatura, riparata dalla tramontana.
Not yet satisfied, we decided to once again change the beach. This time, it’s up to Cala Francese only few minutes, choosing instead Cala Maluk which is situated along the road that runs alongside the airport. It is a large bay, protected from the north wind.
La sera finalmente ceniamo alla Trattoria Azzurra, sulla centralissima Via Roma.
Il paese si sviluppa tutto intorno a questa via.
The evening we have dinner at Trattoria Azzurra, in Via Roma, the main street.
The country is spread all around this Street.
Intorno al paese, il territorio è brullo, quasi desertico, caratterizzato qua e la da resti di dammusi, le antiche costruzioni in pietra, tipiche di questa terra.
Lungo la strada, inoltre, lasciatevi guidare dal profumo di finocchietto selvatico, presente praticamente in ogni angolo dell’isola.
Around the country, the land is barren, almost desert, marked here and there by the remains of dammusi, old stone buildings, typical of this region.
Along the way, also, let yourself be guided by the scent of wild fennel, present in virtually every corner of the Island.

There are two harbours, the new …
…e il porto vecchio, più piccolo.
… and the old one, smallest.
Al porto nuovo, la mattina seguente, abbiamo preso una delle tantissime barche che troverete per fare l’intero giro dell’isola.
At the new harbour, the next morning, we took one of the many boats that you will find to do the whole tour of the island.
“Maria Grazia”, di Franco e Carla, è stata la nostra scelta, rivelatasi eccellente alla fine della giornata.
Dalle 10:30 alle 17:00 circa, abbiamo ammirato la bellezza di Lampedusa. Ad allietarci aperitivo, pranzo, merenda….tutto abordo, tutto pesce, tutto buonissimo.
Franco e Carla poi sono super simpatici…barca altamente consigliata!
Prima tappa e primo di tanti bagni: la baia della Tabaccara.

From 10:30 to 17:00, we admired the beauty of Lampedusa. During the way, you’ll have appetizer, lunch, snack …. all on board, all fish dishes, all very good.
Carla Franco are super… highly recommended!

Proseguendo la navigazione, passiamo davanti all’Isola dei Conigli dove andremo il giorno dopo e a Cala Pulcino, un’altra meraviglia.
Continuing navigation, we pass in front on the Isle of Rabbits , where we will go on the next day, and in front of Cala Chick, another wonder.
Lasciando il versante sud, ci avviciniamo a quello settentrionale caratterizzato da coste alte e frastagliate.
Leaving the south side, we get closer to the northern one, characterized by high and rugged coastline.
L’imponenza delle alte pareti rocciose e il blu dell’acqua, resa brillante dalla luce del sole, rendono il tutto decisamente affascinante.

Da Punta Parise, a Sacramento, al Faraglione, a Punta Cappellone….una meglio dell’altra.

Essendo la scogliera molto alta, questa parte dell’isola è raggiungibile solo via barca.
Being the very high cliff, this part of the island is only accessible by boat.
La serata non poteva non concludersi con una bella cena a base di cous cous di cernia, specialità locale. Abbiamo scelto, su consiglio di Franco, il ristorante Cavalluccio Marino.
The evening could not end with a good dinner of cous cous of grouper , a local specialty. We chose, on the advice of Franco, the restaurant Cavalluccio Marino.
Ultimo giorno, finalmente l’Isola dei Conigli…

Annoverata tra le più belle spiagge del mondo, è un posto incantevole.
I colori dell’acqua sono uno spettacolo.

Alcune controversie sussistono circa l’origine del nome: c’è chi fa riferimento alla carta dell’ammiraglio Smith, risalente al 1824, nella quale si legge per la prima volta “Rabit Island”. Nelle cartografie successive il nome viene tradotto, probabilmente erroneamente, dall’inglese (rabit – coniglio), non considerando che forse il termine “rabit” poteva essere arabo, così come il suo significato che tradotto vuol dire “che collega, che lega”, richiamando l’istmo che talvolta congiunge l’isolotto alla terra ferma.
Un’ulteriore ipotesi ritiene che il nome dell’isola sia dovuto alla presenza di una colonia di conigli che molto tempo fa raggiunse l’isola nel monento in cui questa era collegata alla terra, rimanendo successivamente intrappolati e cominciando riprodursi, divenendo così tanti da giustificare il nome dato all’isola.
Some controversies exist about the origin of the name: there are those who refer to the paper of the Admiral Smith, dating back to 1824, in which we read for the first time “Rabit Island.” In subsequent maps the name is translated, probably wrongly, in english (rabit – rabbit), not considering that perhaps the term “rabit” could be Arabic, as well as its meaning which translated means “linking that binds” recalling the isthmus that sometimes connects the islet to the mainland.
Another hypothesis considers that the name is due to the presence of a colony of rabbits that long ago reached the island in the moment that this was connected to the ground, remaining trapped. Subsequently they started to reproduce themselves, becoming so many to justify the name given to the Island.
L’intera area è zona protetta e fa parte della Riserva naturale orientata Isola di Lampedusa. La spiaggia omonima, a poca distanza, sulla terra ferma, è ancora una delle poche zone dove la tartaruga marina caretta caretta depone le sue uova.
Inoltre, l’isola è un’importante stazione di sosta di uccelli migratori che vi fanno tappa in aprile e settembre
L’accesso è limitato ad alcune ore del giorno proprio per lasciare, nelle ore serali, pace e tranquillità alle tartarughe. I volontari di Legambiente garantiscono il rispetto di queste indicazioni, facendo si che la spiaggia resti a lungo la meraviglia che è.
Se vi capita, andateci…Lampedusa è davvero bella e merita di essere conosciuta, per le sue bellezze e per la sua gente.
The whole area is a protected area and it is part of the Nature Reserve Island of Lampedusa. The beach with the same name is still one of the few areas where the caretta caretta sea turtle lays its eggs.
