Leila Menchari, chi era (anzi "è") costei?

Se non conoscete Leila state peccando agli occhi della maison Hermès, perchè lei è la creatrice di una delle tante cose che rendono uniche il brand di Faubourg St. Honorè. Patrick Thomas, AD della casa, non esita a definirla musa. E non sbaglia. Lei ha dato vita alle famose vetrine di 24 Faubourg.
Leila nasce nel 1926 in una ricca famiglia tunisina. Si trasferirà a Parigi per studiare pittura all' ècole Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts, dove incontra Azzedine Alaia. Per una serie di vie traverse finisce a lavorare da Hermès. Lì, nel 1977, Jean Louis Dumas, fino a poco tempo fa (cioè a quando è morto) "grande capo" della maison, le assegna, tra gli altri, il compito di abbellire le vetrine, che ancora oggi rende uniche (quella delle vetrine Hermès è un' "antica tradizione").
Do you know Leila Menchari? Well, if you don't, this is a very bad thing, especially for the Hermès brand. Leila was born in 1926 in Tunisia. She went to Paris to study painting at the ècole Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts, where she met Azzedine Alaia, a famous north-African fashion designer. Thanks to him, after some other works, she came at the Hermès maison. It was there that, in 1977, she met Jean Louis Dumas (he was the "chief" of Hermès till last year, when he died).
He asked her to deal with the famous shop windows of 24 Faubourg, as she does still today.
Leila viaggiò per tutto il mondo, prendendo ispirazione per le vetrine, che rappresentano l' anima della maison: un viaggio in terre esotiche e lontane, un viaggio d' altri tempi, scevro da globalizzazione e turismo di massa: un vero lusso che non era schiavo del tempo. Basta pensare ai bei foulard o al servizio da tavola Cheval d' Orient, ai posacenere o ai bracciali laccati per farsi venire alla mente queste immagini. Oggi Leila è anziana, ma arzilla: viaggia e allestisce, crea o ricrea. L' unico mese che la maison la lascia libera ritorna in Tunisia, alla sua casa di Hammamet a cui è particolarmente legata.
Quelli che la conoscono la definiscono brillante. Io non lo so, ma sicuramente è un' artista, un' esteta. Definirla donna della moda sarebbe brutto e riduttivo: le atmosfere che lei ricrea sono d' altri tempi, ma rimangono atemporali.
Leila travelled around the world taking inspiration for the windows, that represent the soul of Hermès: a travel in exotic and far lands, an experience of times gone by, free from globalization, mass tourism and so on: a real luxury that wasn't slave of the time. Just think at the carrès or the Cheval d' Orient dinner set, the ashtrays or the laquered bracelets. Leila is old but hale, and still works at Hermès. On her unique month of vacation she comes back to Tunisia, at her old mansion of Hammamet, that she particulary loves.
Those who know her say she's brillian. I say she's an artist, an aesthete. Triying to define her a woman of the fashion world would be bad and reductive: the athmospheares she recreates are of old times, but together timeless.
