In occasione dell'uscita italiana del suo libro "Menage proibito" pubblicato dalla Leggereditore, la bravissima autrice statunitense Lora Leigh ha concesso al nostro blog un'esclusiva intervista. L'uscita di questo romanzo è un vero e proprio piccolo grande evento per la nostra editoria non solo perché si tratta di una scrittrice mai tradotta prima nel nostro paese ma anche perché il genere che contraddistingue i suoi romanzi raramente ha avuto così ampio risalto nel panorama del romance italiano: storie ad alto contenuto erotico e sensuale dove l'amore non viene mai relegato in secondo piano ma anzi, costituisce l'ingrediente fondamentale delle sue bollenti e avvincenti trame. Dear Lora, first of all thank you for accepting to be interviewed. You are a worldwide known author, and for the first time one of your novels is going to be released in Italy too, with such great happiness and expectation from Italian readers, although the most of them don't know you. Would you like to introduce yourself and tell us something about you and your life as a writer?

Hello, I’m Lora Leigh, that author of the Bound Hearts, Navy SEALs and Elite Ops series to name a few. I’m quiet, though in my imagination I’m bold, daring, and the director of heroes and heroines who live out the adventures that flow freely through my mind.
I live on a mountain in Pennsylvania, surrounded by woods, with my wonderful family and a host of pets, two of which are my Manx kittens who think they’re dogs.

Cara Lora, grazie innanzitutto per aver accettato di essere intervistata. Sei un'autrice molto conosciuta in tutto il mondo, e per la prima volta un tuo romanzo sta per uscire anche in Italia, con grande gioia e aspettativa delle lettrici Italiane, che però non ti conoscono. Ti va di presentarti e raccontarci qualcosa di te?

Ciao, sono Lora Leigh, l'autrice delle serie Bound Hearts, Navy SEALs e Elite Ops, per nominarne qualcuna. Sono una persona tranquilla, anche se nella mia immaginazione sono audace, coraggiosa, e la direttrice di eroi ed eroine che vivono le avventure che scaturiscono generosamente dalla mia mente. Vivo nelle montagne della Pennsylvania, circondata da boschi, con la mia meravigliosa famiglia e un'orda di animali domestici, tra cui due gattini Manx che pensano di essere due cani.

How does it feel being published for the first time in another country?

It’s incredible, and a dream I never imagined would come true. And I’m especially excited to see it in a country that has so fascinated me for so many years.

Come ci si sente quando si viene pubblicati in un altro paese?

E' una cosa incredibile, un sogno che non immaginavo potesse diventare realtà. E sono in particolar modo entusiasta di vederlo realizzato in un paese che mi ha affascinata per così tanti anni.

When did your passion for writing start and why did you choose to write erotic novels?

I started writing in the seventh grade when my English teacher gave a writing assignment, and I haven’t stopped. Erotic novels of course came later, though I’ve always written romance of some sort. I guess the eroticism came with my own maturity, and the passion I felt for other novels of a like nature.

Quando è nata la passione per la scrittura e cosa ti ha spinta a scrivere romanzi erotici?

Ho iniziato a scrivere alle medie, quando la mia insegnante di inglese ci diede un compito di scrittura, e da allora non ho più smesso. I romanzi erotici naturalmente vennero più tardi, tuttavia ho sempre scritto romance di un qualche tipo. Immagino che l'erotismo sia venuto con la mia stessa maturità e la passione che provavo per altri romanzi di questa natura.

In many cases, erotic romance is considered synonym of pornography for women, what do you think about it? which is, in your opinion, the boundary between erotic and pornography?

Pornography, in my opinion, doesn’t involve romance, or love. It’s sex for the sake of sex and nothing more. Erotic is the expression of the intimacy between a man and woman who love, or who are crossing that border from lust to love. It’s the sensual expression of the emotions, the connection and the bonds that come between a couple who will realize that nothing, or no one fits them as well as that other person.

In molti casi il romance erotico è considerato sinonimo di pornografia per donne, cosa ne pensi? Qual è secondo te, il confine tra erotico e pornografia?

La pornografia, secondo me, non include il romanticismo, o l'amore. E' sesso fine a se stesso e niente di più. Erotico è un'espressione di intimità tra un uomo e una donna che si amano, o che stanno attraversando quel confine che esiste tra lussuria e amore. E' l'espressione sensuale delle emozioni, la connessione e i legami che intercorrono fra due persone ciascuna delle quali si renderà conto che non esiste niente, o nessuno,  che si adatta  altrettanto bene come il proprio partner

In your books you explores many aspects of sexuality, even the most extreme, is there any erotic scene you found particularly embarrassing or difficult to write? and any you found instead very involving?
If you had to choose the best love/sex scene you ever wrote, which would be?

Pick the best? That would be really hard to do. I guess though, the one I remember the most is the scene at the tractor in Forbidden Pleasure. For some reason there just seemed to be such a natural, pure eroticism in that scene. The characters and their pleasure in each other just felt different, hotter, and with a deeper emotional bond than normal.
As for embarrassing or difficult to write? Nothing really embarrassing I don’t believe, though there have been some sexual scenes that were more difficult to write simply because of the characters involved and their emotions.

Nei tuoi libri esplori molti aspetti della sessualità, anche i più estremi, c'e' una scena erotica che hai trovato particolarmente imbarazzante o difficile da scrivere? e qualcuna che invece ti ha particolarmente coinvolta?
Se dovessi scegliere la migliore scena di sesso/amore che tu abbia mai scritto, quale sarebbe?

Scegliere la migliore? Ciò è davvero difficile  Suppongo, comunque che quella che ricordo meglio è la scena sul trattore nel libro MENAGE PROIBITO. Per qualche ragione,  in quella scena è sembrato esserci  un erotismo così naturale e puro. I personaggi e il loro piacere erano percepiti  in modo differente, più rovente, e con un legame emotivo più profondo del normale.
Per quanto riguarda la scena più imbarazzante o difficile da scrivere? Niente è stato realmente imbarazzante, anche se ci sono state alcune scene di sesso più difficili da scrivere semplicemente a causa dei personaggi coinvolti e delle loro emozioni.

Where do you find your inspiration for your stories? Do you get your ideas from real life in order to give a face to your characters or they just come out from your imagination while writing?

They come from everywhere. News stories, movies, crowded places, expressions on a face, or certain actions between couples. www.googlek.

Dove trovi maggiore fonte di ispirazione per le tue storie? Prendi spunto dalla vita reale per dare un volto ai tuoi personaggi oppure emergono dalla tua immaginazione mentre scrivi?

Le idee vengono da ogni parte. Storie, notizie, film, luoghi affollati, l'espressione di una faccia, o un certo comportamento all'interno delle coppie. L'ispirazione può provenire da ogni luogo, dovunque. Penso che dipenda tutto da quanto sei disposta a leggere tra le righe, e immaginare dove le cose possono arrivare.
 

There is a lot of expectation for the Italian edition of Forbidden Pleasure, because it's the first of your books to be published in our country. If you had the chance to introduce this story to our readers, what would you like to let them know?

That Mac, Keiley and Jethro’s story isn’t about breaking rules, or stepping into the erotic as much as it is about listening to the heart, and accepting that not everything or everyone fits into a box, or into a pre-designed life.
A woman’s heart is enduring, and it’s accepting, much more than anyone realizes.
FORBIDDEN PLEASURE is about exploring the depths of her heart, as well as her sexuality.

C'e' molta attesa per l'edizione italiana di Forbidden Pleasure, perché si tratta del primo libro dei tuoi a essere pubblicato nel nostro paese. Se avessi la possibilità di introdurre questa storia alle nostre lettrici, cosa ti piacerebbe far loro sapere?

La storia di Mac, Jethro e Keiley non si basa tanto sul rompere gli schemi o nell'entrare nel mondo dell'erotismo, quanto sull'ascoltare il proprio cuore ed accettare che non tutto e tutti rientrano in certe categorie o in una vita preconfezionata.
Il cuore di una donna è capace di sopportare e di accettare, molto più di quanto chiunque possa immaginare. MENAGE PROIBITO è un romanzo che esplora le profondità del cuore, così come quelle della sessualità.


In the Bound Hearts series, you put a particular attention on how your characters react to gossips and rumors about their sexual relationships. Is there any special reason driving you this way?

In the research I’ve done for such situations and lives, I’ve come to believe that certain situations are too heavily influenced by how the world or those who see us, or work with us, react to what they know about our private lives. Jobs can be lost, friends can be lost, and one can be ostracized simply because of what is known about their private lives.
Future books are shifting from this element more though, and going into other areas that are altered, or affected by the sexuality of the characters in the Bound Hearts series.

Nella serie Bound Hearts, poni particolare attenzione su come i tuoi protagonisti reagiscono nei confronti dei pettegolezzi e delle dicerie in merito alle loro relazioni sessuali. C'e' una ragione particolare che ti ha spinta in questo senso?

Le ricerche che ho condotto su situazioni e stili di vita di questo tipo, mi hanno portato a credere che certe situazioni sono troppo pesantemente influenzate da come il mondo, o coloro che ci circondano o che lavorano insieme a noi, reagiscono di fronte a quello che apprendono sulle nostre vite private. Si può perdere il lavoro, gli amici, si può essere ostracizzati semplicemente a causa di quello che si viene a sapere della nostra vita privata.
I libri futuri si sposteranno ancora di più comunque da questi elementi, ed esploreranno altri aspetti che vengono alterati o influenzate dalla sessualità dei personaggi della serie Bound Hearts.


How do you feel when one of your books is going to be released? Do you fear negative critics? Do you feel the weight of your readers’ expectations?

I think all writers feel the weight of expectation, and with a long running series, I think a writer can feel a greater weight. With each book a writer has to balance on the delicate lines of informing new readers with keeping the story fresh for those who have followed the series. At the same time, you’re bringing new, hopefully fresh ideas and characters into an already pre-designed world.
As for negative criticism, this is something I think all writers have to get used to just as they learn to adapt to the excitement and fears of a new book releasing.
For me, I still get the flutters and the anticipation of a new book release. My hands still shake, and I still pace the floor for a while before the release in abject fear that everyone will hate it. 

Cosa provi quando sta per uscire un tuo libro? temi le critiche negative? avverti il peso delle aspettative che le lettrici nutrono nei confronti delle tue storie?

Penso che tutte le scrittrici sentano il peso delle aspettative, e nel caso di serie così lunghe credo che il peso sia ancora più grande. Con ogni libro l'autrice deve trovare un equilibrio tra il delicato compito di informare le nuove lettrici e mantenere la storia fresca per coloro che hanno seguito l'intera serie. Allo stesso tempo, deve portare idee e personaggi nuovi  in un mondo già creato.
Per quanto riguarda le critiche negative, è qualcosa cui tutte le autrici, credo, debbano abituarsi così come si adattano all'eccitazione e alla paura generata dall'uscita di un nuovo libro.
A me vengono ancora le palpitazioni nell'attesa dell'uscita di un nuovo libro. Mi tremano ancora le mani e cammino avanti e indietro per un po' , nel terrore che la gente lo detesti.

How did you get the idea of human being characters modified with animal dna?
The Breeds series has reached the 21st title, have you ever had the temptation to put an end to it?

Never. At one time, about four books into the series, an editor suggested I end it, and I asked her exactly how I could end such a series, when it had only just begun. There are so many directions, so many different ways the series could go, and so emotions that could be touched upon in a series such as the Breeds. If you look at the series, you can see many of the places each book could go, and the adventures that could be had in todays world.
The series is set just enough in the future that I’m able to give my heroes cool toys, but not so much that the landscape is unrecognizable.
This series is fun, it’s adaptable, and it has an emotional depth that can be covered in so many different ways.
So no, the temptation to end it has never there, and I don’t foresee the temptation coming anytime soon.

Come è nata l'idea degli umani modificati con dna animale? La serie Breeds è arrivata al ventunesimo titolo, non hai mai avuto la tentazione di abbandonare?

Mai. Ad un certo punto, circa al quarto libro della serie, un editore mi suggerì di concluderla, e io le chiesi come esattamente avrei potuto finire una serie simile, che era appena agli inizi. Ci sono così tante direzioni, così tanti modi diversi in cui la serie può espandersi, e così tante emozioni che possono essere toccate in una serie come quella dei Breeds. Se osservate la serie, potete vedere molti dei luoghi in cui ogni libro può andare, e le avventure che ci possono essere nel mondo di oggi.
La serie è ambientata abbastanza nel futuro da poter dare ai miei eroi fantastici giochi, ma non così tanto da rendere l'ambiente irriconoscibile. Questa serie è divertente, si adatta, e presenta una profondità di emozioni che può essere compresa in tanti modi diversi.
Perciò no, la tentazione di concluderla non mi viene mai, e non prevedo mi verrà mai.


Among all the Breeds characters which one is your favorite one? Why?

Which book am I working on? :-) That’s always my favorite. I’m very partial to Jonas, Dane, Callan and Dash, Law and Rule, Dog, Mordecai and Cavalier, Brim Stone… well, you see where I’m going. LOL

Fra i personaggi della serie Breed ce n'è uno che ti ha lasciato un segno particolare?

Su quale libro sto lavorando? :-) Quello è sempre il mio preferito. Ho un debole per Jonas, Dane, Callan e Dash, Law e Rule, Dog, Mordecai e Cavalier, Brim Stone... be', vedete come va a finire. LOL


Is there a book that you wrote that you feel particularly representative of you as author and of your work?

That might be a hard question. I think each book is representative of me as an author, at that point in my life. Two years ago, my life went through an upheaval and change, and it made connecting with the characters very hard for a while. I wasn’t satisfied at all with my work then. I’ve finally started getting things in order once again though, and connecting easier with the characters, and I think the books are showing the growth I’ve made during that period of time.

C'è un titolo tra tutti i romanzi che hai scritto, che senti come particolarmente rappresentativo di te, come scrittrice, e del tuo lavoro?

Questa potrebbe essere una domanda difficile. Penso che ogni libro sia rappresentativo di me come autrice, a questo punto della mia vita. Due anni fa, la mia vita subì uno sconvolgimento e un cambiamento, e ciò rese molto difficile, per un po' di tempo, relazionare con i miei personaggi. Non ero per niente soddisfatta del mio lavoro allora. Alla fine ho iniziato a mettere nuovamente le cose in ordine, ad essere in contatto coi personaggi più facilmente, e penso che i libri mostrino la crescita avvenuta in me durante quel periodo.

What do you love to be surrounded from when you’re writing? What you can’t do without?

Can’t do without my soda pop or my coffee. I have to have those, as well as my 80’s hairband music. As for the surrounding, I need to be alone, and I need all the notes I’m made for that particular book at my side. After that, it’s just a matter of following my imagination.

Di che cosa ami circondarti quando scrivi un libro? Di cosa non puoi fare a meno ?

Non posso fare a meno della mia soda pop o del mio caffè. Devo averli, così come la mia musica degli anni 80. Riguardo quello che mi circonda, ho bisogno di essere sola, e devo avere tutti gli appunti che ho preso per quel particolare libro accanto. Dopo di che, è solo questione di seguire la mia immaginazione.

Have you ever received any offer to make movies from your books?

Not yet. Maybe, one day. That would be nice I think.

Ti hanno mai proposto di fare dei film tratti dai tuoi libri?

Non ancora. Forse, un giorno. Sarebbe  bello, credo.

What do you love to do in your free time? What kind of books do you read? and is there any special author you love above the others?

Free time? I have that? :-)
I enjoy contemporary romantic suspense with a little paranormal thrown in. I have far too many favorites to name, but my all time favorite has always been Linda Howard. I’ve always enjoyed her books.

Nel tempo libero, quali sono i suoi interessi? Quali i tuoi gusti di lettura? C'è qualche autore che ami particolarmente.

Tempo libero? Ho del tempo libero? :-)
Mi piace leggere il romantic suspense contemporaneo con un po' di paranormale buttato dentro. Ho di gran lunga troppi autori preferiti per nominarli tutti, tuttavia la mia favorita da sempre è Linda Howard. Mi sono sempre piaciuti i suoi libri.

Are you working on a new project right now? Would you tell us something about it?

At the moment, I’m actually working on the 12th title of the Bound Hearts series, Dangerous Pleasure. Dangerous Pleasure is the story of Abram Mustafa, Khalid Mustafa’s (Guilty Pleasure) brother, and Paige Gilbraith. It’s a story I’ve been eager to start, and so far, the characters are giving me some wonderful insights into their conflict.

Stai lavorando a dei nuovi progetti, in questo momento? Puoi anticiparci qualcosa?

A dire il vero, in questo momento sto lavorando sul dodicesimo titolo della serie Bound Hearts, Dangerous Pleasure. Dangerous Pleasure è la storia di Abram Mustafa, il fratello di Khalid Mustafa (Guilty Pleasure), e Paige Gilbraith. E' una storia che non vedevo l'ora di iniziare, e finora, i personaggi mi stanno dando delle splendide introspezioni dei loro conflitti.
