Anche quest’anno ho mantenuto la solidissima tradizione di casa Girola, in vigore fin dalla metà degli anni ’90, e mi sono fatto degli autoregali di Natale. Che poi è il modo migliore per non sbagliare nell’acquisto di un presentino :)
Questa volta sono stato decisamente monotematico. Ho deciso di comprare tre manualetti della ottima Osprey Publishing (seguitela su Facebook, ancor più che sul sito ufficiale), casa editrice specializzata in saggi e in volumetti grafici in tema storico/militare.
Non si tratta tuttavia di acquisti casuali, bensì di materiale di cui necessito per scrivere alcuni ebook che ho in cantiere da tempo.
Sono libretti di rapida lettura, ma ricchi di tabelle e illustrazioni. Una manna per uno scrittore che ama certi generi, lasciatemelo dire. I tre titoli che mi sono regalato sono…
German Armies 1870 – 1871: Prussia
In 1870 Bismarck, Prime Minister of Prussia, engineered a war with France that would result in the fall of the Second Empire. It was the first modern European war and saw the use of bolt action rifles, machine guns, railway transport and professional general staffs. This war led to Germany’s unification as a militaristic nation, and was central to France’s military development, influencing her disastrous tactics in 1914. Mi sarà utile, va da sé, per scrivere Le Piovre Volanti di Bismarck, terzo e ultimo romanzo (sì, romanzo vero e proprio) della saga de I Mecha di Napoleone III. Nonostante gli eserciti ucronici di tale saga siano essenzialmente più evoluti di quelli del “vero” 1870-1880, il volume della Osprey mi offrirà una panoramica interessante su uniformi, armate, battaglioni e quant’altro riguardi l’esercito prussiano della seconda metà del 1800.

Oltre a essere un volume affascinante, come sono affascinanti i draghi, mi servirà, anche se non a livello di indispensabilità, per meglio definire le tattiche dei Venatores dell’omonima saga.
Inoltre Dragonslayers è un libretto (80 pagine a colori) davvero ricco di informazioni, molte risapute, altre meno, che fa piacere sfogliare di tanto in tanto. Da collezionare e da gustare lentamente.

Anche se questo libretto grazioso non mi servirà nel periodo breve, sono certo che mi sarà d’ispirazione per una novelette stand-alone a cui sto pensando da qualche tempo. Inutile anticipare troppo, ma nelle mie intenzioni dovrebbe essere un racconto ucronico/horror col nazismo esoterico come elemento centrale.
Nulla di originale o di innovativo, ma sarà proprio ai fan di certe atmosfere che cercherò di rivolgermi…

Visto che negli ultimi giorni mi sono impegnato in un progetto di scrittura del tutto imprevisto (questo) ho ordinato un quarto volumetto pubblicato dalla Osprey. Si tratta di Gladiators: 100 BC-AD 200, di Stephen Wisdom. Visto che su Amazon è introvabile a prezzi umani, ne ho acquistato una copia sull’altrettanto valido Play.com.
Arriverà prima delle feste? Il corriere sarà abbastanza rapido? (Aggiornamento: pare di no, ma in compenso ho ricevuto in regalo un saggio ancor migliore, sempre in tema di arene e gladiatori.)
Riuscirò a utilizzarlo per documentarmi nella fase di scrittura di Gladiatori contro Kaiju?
