Paddling around

Abbiamo la fortuna di appartenere a quella folta schiera di pagaiatori che NON deve pagaiare il primo dell'anno per assicurarsi di pagaiare per il resto dell'anno. Così, saltata la pagaiata inaugurale del primo gennaio, abbiamo rinnovato l'incontro con il Lago Maggiore giusto ieri, in una splendida domenica soleggiata in cui soffiavano venti caldi da nord tra i 15 ed i 20 nodi. Non c'era nessun altro!
Quando ho fissato la mia girandola colorata sulla poppa del kayak ho pensato che sarebbe stato l'ultimo viaggio insieme: la forza del vento avrebbe potuto sfilacciarla, com'era capitato all'altra. Invece, benché intense e continue, le raffiche ci hanno spinto a planare sulle onde spumeggianti così rare sul lago e hanno reso molto frizzanti le traversate che avevamo scelto di affrontare: prima verso Verbania sulla sponda piemontese e, dopo un bel pranzetto sotto il sole ben ridossati in un porticciolo turistico, di nuovo verso il nostro amato punto di partenza. Tre ore nel vento, seguite da un paio d'ore al bar con amici incontrati per caso... un buon inizio d'anno!

Mentre affrontavo a testa bassa le sferzate del vento, il pensiero è corso lontano, ad acque salate dai colori intriganti che dei nostri amici kayaker stanno solcando in questi giorni e per molti altri ancora.
Deb Volturno e Paula Renouf iniziano oggi la circumnavigazione dell'Isola Great Barrier in Nuova Zelanda, Helen Wilson e Mark Tozer di Greenland or Bust sono già partiti con Wes Moses per tentare la circumnavigazione della Giamaica (non male!) e la nostra coppia preferita Eila Wilkinson e Nigel Dennis sono da giorni impegnati nella loro nuova avventura alle Bahamas: abbiamo inserito nel blog di Tatiyak il link diretto al loro blog perchè i racconti di Eila sono sempre pieni di particolari curiosi e divertenti! Saranno giorni pieni di pagaiate per ogni dove!

We both are lucky enough to be part of that large group of sea kayakers that doesn't need to paddle the first day of the year to be sure of paddling for the rest of the year. So, skipped the inaugural paddling of January 1st, we've renewed the meeting with our belowed Lake Maggiore exactly yesterday, during a beautiful sunny Sunady when strong hot winds were blowing from the North among 15 and 20 knots. There was nobody else: we were alone!
When I've fixed my colored windmill on the stern of the kayak I've thought that it would have been the last trip together: the force of the wind would have been able to fray it, as it happened to my last one. Instead, although intense and continuous, the gusts have pushed us to surf a little bit on the foamy waves, so rare on the lake, and have made very fizzy the two crossings we choose to attempt: first to the opposite shore and than, after a relaxed lunch under the sun in a sheltered little touristic dock, again toward our familiar beach. Three hours in the wind, following by a couple of hours to the cafe with friends met by chance... a good beginning of year indeed!


While I was facing the lashing of the wind, my thought was running so far, to salted waters with fascinating colours. I was thinking on our friends paddling around...
Deb Volturno and Paula Renouf begin the circumnavigation of the Great Barrier Island in New Zelanda, Helen Wilson and Mark Tozer of Greenland or Bust today they have already departed with Wes Moses to try the circumnavigation of Jamaica (not badly!) and our preferred couple Eila Wilkinson and Nigel Dennis have been involved since some busy days in their new adventure to the Bahamas: we have immediately update Tatiyak's blog wih the direct link to their blog because it's full of curious stories and amusing details! There will be long days full of paddling for every where!
