Painting with children / dipingere con i bambini

Una giovane mamma mi chiede via mail come si può incoraggiare il talento di un bambino di tre anni che dice di voler essere un pittore.
Cara Pina, io posso rispondere sulla base della mia esperienza con le mie nipotine.

I bambini devono essere incoraggiati a diventare artisti perchè l'infanzia  è il momento in cui  sono già per la loro natura, spontanei e diretti.
Un bambino deve poter esprimersi giocando, però per fare dei lavori piacevoli occorre senz'altro qualche trucco.
Una area di lavoro precisa...niente è più devastante di un bambino con i colori che vada in giro per casa ...a meno che non vogliate muri alla Mirò.

Quando le mie due nipotine sono al  tavolo, pronte per  dipingere, io sto vicino a loro e controllo tutto ma con discrezione.
Metto dell'acqua nei contenitori che non si rovesciano e poi preparo molti pennelli. I pennelli sono economici perchè finiranno un po' maltrattati, ma con un minimo di qualità, altrimenti non uscirà fuori la pennellata. I miei  pennelli per bambini sono stati comprati in  empori cinesi, economici ma funzionali. A questo punto servono i colori. I bambini pasticciano molto il colore e spesso non riescono a dipingere con le scatole di acquerelli per bambini.
Io metto a disposizione oltre a queste scatole, le mie tavolozze grandi dove diluisco la tempera che usano per le scuole un colore per volta, partendo dal più sporchevole il giallo....( vassoi infrangibili possono fare lo stesso lavoro purchè stabili come le tavolozze). Infine la carta.

I bambini sono molto attivi e vogliono fare tante cose...io taglio a grandi rettangoli carta da pacchi bianca e la fisso al tavolo di lavoro in modo che non si sposti. Resistente ed economica, spesso anche nelle scuole elementari, i maestri  usano  la carta da pacchi per far sperimentare  gli allievi senza pensiero di sprecare materiale.
Quando la carta è troppo bagnata viene tolta e si passa ad altri fogli.
Beatrice ed Alice hanno capito che la carta ad un certo punto deve asciugare e guardano a queste azioni con una certa soddisfazione, mentre i lavori dipinti si moltiplicano.
Il momento della pittura è un momento preciso...appena le bimbe si stancano io rapidamente tolgo tutto.

Faccio subito una mostra dei piccoli capolavori in giro per la stanza con l'aiuto del nastro adesivo di carta, su superfici che non si rovinino .
Cercare di tenere i pennelli puliti, sciacquandoli subito con cura mentre i bimbi stanno dipingendo con  altri pennelli è una chiave di riuscita.
Colori brillanti e fantasìa dei bimbi creano opere che hanno sempre un bellissimo impatto.Spero, mia giovane mamma di essere stata utile,a te ed ad altri.

Maybe not all children become artists, but using colors and imagination, all become artists
of their lives.  Forse non tutti i bambini diventeranno pittori ma usando colori ed immaginazione, tutti diventeranno artisti della loro vita.

In pratica senza intralciare la fantasìa dobbiamo un po' trasformarci in assistenti di questi piccoli artisti per favorirne l'espressione pratica.
( Tutti questi consigli assomigliano all'uovo di colombo forse...però mettendoli in pratica tutti insieme ci hanno dato momenti di gioia e risultati piacevoli).

A young mother, Pina, asked me via email how she can encourage talent of a three year old child who says "I wants to be a painter".
I can answer based on my experience with my grandaughters.Children should be encouraged to become artists, because childhood is the time when they are already by their nature spontaneous and direct. A child must be able to express itself by playing, but to make work pleasant certainly need some trick.

A work area well definitta ... nothing is more devastating to a child with colors that go around the house ... unless you want the walls, Miro style ....
When my two granddaughters are at the table ready to paint, I'm close to them and I control everything, but with discretion.
I put water in containers that do not tip over and then I prepare many brushes (brushes inexpensive because it will end up a bit 'mistreated but with a minimum of quality otherwise it will not come off the brushstroke. My brushes for children were bought in Chinese emporiums, cheap but suitable.
At this point, we need colors.
Children messing much color and often fail to paint with boxes of watercolors for children.
I make myself available to Alice and Beatrice, in addition to these boxes, my big plastic palettes, where I dilute gouache using elementary schools.

I propose a color at a time, starting with the yellow that gets easily becoming unpleasant .... (use large trays, shatterproof can do the same job, because they are stable as palettes).
Finally the paper.
The children are very active, they want paint so many things ... I cut  large rectangles of white wrapping paper, then  I block them at my  work table, with masking tape, so it does not move while painting action. Durable and economical, often in primary schools, teachers use the wrapping paper to make working with little students without thought of waste material.
When sheet  is too wet, I take it off , then I block  on table  another sheet.
Beatrice and Alice realized that at some point their painting needs to dry.

They look at  these actions with some satisfaction, while painting works done multiply .
Time of  painting is a precise moment ... just girls get tired, I quickly take off everything.
I immediately do an exhibition of small works of art around the room with the help of masking tape on surfaces that do not get damaged.
Try to keep your brushes clean, rinsing immediately with care while the children are painting with other brushes is a key to success.
Bright colors and imagination of children create works that they always have a nice impact.

In practice without hindering the imagination, we have a bit to turn us into assistants of these young artists to promote their practical expression.
