Ieri sera io e la mia amica Shivani siamo andate al Brooklyn Museum per il "Target First Saturdays". Era stata proprio Shivani, anni fa, a portarmi per la prima volta al museo aperto di notte, in una serata fantastica di cui avevo parlato anche qui.

The April event celebrates the life and work of artist Keith Haring. Fantastico, vero? Ecco, però fate attenzione all'ultima frase, in cui si parla di "limited space". Quando io e Shivani siamo arrivate c'era una gran folla radunata nel piazzale davanti al museo, e ben presto abbiamo scoperto che era troppo pieno e non facevano entrare più nessuno. Noi misere!
Però mi ha fatto un enorme piacere scoprire che questa iniziativa vada così bene. Questo conferma, semmai ne avessi avuto bisogno, la mia opinione che New York è l'unica città davvero democratica ed egualitaria che io conosca. Qui c'è di tutto, e tutto convive, si mescola e si fonde nell'atmosfera straordinaria di questa città meravigliosa. Qui mi sento sicura a girare da sola a ogni ora del giorno e della notte (cosa che non mi succede affatto nella ricca e fighetta San Francisco), qui incontro la classe media bianca, nera, gialla e verde, qui non vedo la segregazione diffusa ma mai menzionata della California un po' ipocrita. Questa città è di gran lunga il posto più vivo che io abbia mai visto.
E per allietare la mia giornata (e forse come premio della cara vecchia New York per aver preso così sportivamente l'orrenda delusione di non essere riuscita a ballare con il sound del DJ Junior Vasquez), questa mattina ho ricevuto un regalo.
