E’ quindi l’amore per Roberta a portare Sidonie alle porte di Castel Craven, magione in pietra cupa e isolata, arroccata su una scogliera a picco sul mare, dove Jonas attende che la sua preda si faccia viva, permettendogli di arrecare ulteriore danno a quel cugino che lo ha derubato della legittimità (essendo lui figlio del precedente Visconte, ma dichiarato bastardo quando era bambino) e del rispetto per sè stesso e per i propri genitori.

Jonas, dall’altra parte, è un uomo sfigurato nel viso e nell’anima.
Le orrende ferite inflittegli da bambino lo hanno reso solitario e cupo. Disprezzato per l’illegittimità e temuto per un viso da tutti definito mostruoso, ha dovuto costruirsi una corazza d’acciaio per proteggersi dall’insensibilità, dai tradimenti e dalle crudeltà del prossimo, riuscendo nonostante tutto a crearsi un’esistenza di ricchezze, anche se solamente materiali.
Ma è la profonda rabbia per l’odiato cugino che lo spinge. L’unica ragione di un’esistenza priva di ogni scintilla di vita, d’amore. Un odio che lo ha spinto ad addentrarsi in una crudeltà sempre più incurante del prossimo, fino a quest’ultimo atto con cui volutamente ha attirato la debole sorella di Sidonie che, dipendente dal gioco d’azzardo, si è dimostrata una facile preda nell’ultimo di una lunga lista di atti per distruggere l’abbietto cugino. Peccato che in mezzo a questo patto maligno sia finita la persona che si rivelerà la più luminosa e pura che Jonas abbia mai incontrato.

Quello che sembra essere un incontro nato sotto i peggiori auspici presto si muterà in un legame inaspettato.
Due anime maltrattate troveranno nelle braccia l’una dell’altro ciò di cui entrambi erano inconsapevoli di stare cercando, in una resa che per entrambi sarà sofferta e difficile, ma infine dolcissima.
Anna Campbell costruisce una storia complessa e intensa, con personaggi vivi e difficili che, lungo tutto il romanzo, mantengono vivo l’interesse del lettore con dialoghi sempre accattivanti e ricchi. A momenti di intensa dolcezza alterna immagini di sensuale abbandono, anche se mai spinto all’eccesso, ma sempre lasciato più all’immaginazione che alla carta. Il dolore di Jonas entra nel cuore e lascia straziati, l’amore e la forza di Sidonie spingono a sognare di poter stringere un legame altrettanto potente nella vita reale.

Sidonie has no faith in men.
With his father’s example and the experience of living with the violent and erratic Viscount Hillbrook, husband of a sister who years of abuse had made unrecognizable, Sidonie decide that marriage -or better, faith in the other sex- is not something that she can voluntarily accept. She has no intention of giving a power so great in the hand of a man, whoever he may be.
But circumstances often lead us against our wishes and our life choices. The same happens to Sidonie when she’s forced to offer her innocence to the licentious and horribly disfigured Jonas Merrick in exchange of the safety of her sister, finished in a treacherous trap aimed at her husband, the hated cousin of Jonas.
It is the love for Roberta that bring Sidonie to the gates of Castle Craven, a dark and isolated stone mansion, perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, where Jonas waits for his prey to show up.

Jonas, is a man scarred in the face and also in his soul.
The horrendous wounds inflicted when he was a child made him lonely and gloomy. He was despised because of his illegitimacy and feared for a face defined by all monstrous. He was forced to build an armor of steel to protect his heart from wickedness, treachery and cruelty. But, in spite of everything, he was able to gain a life of wealth even if only material.
It is the deep anger toward his cousin that pushes him forward. The only reason for an existence deprived of any spark of life, of love. A hatred that led him to be more and more indifferent to others, until he fall so low as to use the gambling addiction of Sidonie sister for his plans for revenge. His plan is to use Sidonie to hurt Hillbrook who robbed him of his inheritance (he was the son of the previous Viscount, but declared illegitimate when he was a child).Too bad that, in the midst of this evil pact, he finds the most pure and luminous woman that he has ever met.

What appears to be a match born under the worst auspices soon became an unexpected gift.
Two battered souls will find in each other what they did not know they needed, in a surrender that is both painful and difficult, but ultimately sweet.
Anna Campbell builds an intense and complex tale of love, with vivid and difficult characters that, throughout the novel, keep alive the interest of the reader with dialogues more and more endearing and rich.
At moments of intense sweetness, the author alternates images of sensual abandon, or pain for Jonas’s fate. Sidonie’s love and strength make you dream of being able to forge a bond just as powerful as their in real life.
A really intense and lovely read.
