Recensione, Luce dei Miei Occhi / Rewiew: A Cry in the Shadows, Giulia Beyman

Sto leggendo un libro a settimana, e ogni tanto mi ricordo di recensirne qualcuno! Stavolta è il turno di Giulia Beyman con il suo Luce dei Miei Occhi, secondo romanzo della saga di Nora Cooper.

Susan è una donna di mezza età, ha una figlia e un cane. La sua sembra una vita normale, se non fosse che Susan ha perso recentemente la vista. Qualche giorno prima di Natale, la sua amica e vicina di casa Alexsandra muore assassinata. Susan non ha il tempo di addolorarsi perché qualche giorno dopo anche sua figlia Margot scompare nel nulla. Perché? Qualcuno l’ha rapita? Chi ha ucciso Alexsandra? Tra l’angoscia di Susan e gli sforzi della polizia di risolvere il doppio caso, Nora Cooper, dagli Stati Uniti, aiuterà Susan a trovare tutte le risposte, facendolo nel suo modo particolare: Nora, infatti, ha il dono di comunicare con l’aldilà.

La scrittura di Giulia Beyman è chiara e scorrevole: è impossibile non mettersi nei panni di Susan e vivere l’incubo di una figlia scomparsa e un’amica assassinata. La protagonista della serie Nora Cooper, già vista nel primo romanzo Prima di dire addio, appare in questo libro in maniera discreta, una trovata molto intelligente per inserire nella stessa serie un romanzo che sarebbe potuto essere totalmente indipendente. Allo stesso tempo, il contributo di Nora nel giallo è originale e determinante per scovare l’assassino e soprattutto trovare Margot. Inoltre, una delle sorprese è l’umanità dell’ispettore di polizia, che spero di rivedere in altri racconti. Chissà.

Se devo trovare un difetto a Luce dei Miei Occhi è probabilmente il mio odiosissimo istinto da ficcanaso che mi ha permesso di individuare il colpevole molto presto. Dall’altra parte, questo mi ha permesso di godermi maggiormente il percorso dei protagonisti fino all’assassino.

I’m reading a book every week, and sometimes I find also the time to review some of them!
This time I chose A Cry in the Shadows by Giulia Beyman, an Italian indie writer whose ebook has been translated in English. A Cry in the Shadows is the second novel of Nora Cooper series, the genre is paranormal mystery.

Blurb: Susan Bley is an American middle-age woman living in Rome with her dog. She has also a little girl. Her life seems quite normal even if she went recently blind after a car accident. Some days before Christamas her neighbour and friend Alexsandra gets killed. Susan doesn’t even the time to cry her friend because her daugther disappears. Why? Has someone kidnapped her? Who killed Alexsandra?
Between Susan’s anguish and the police efforts to solve the cases, Nora Cooper – who’s in the United States – will help Susan to find all the anwsers. Nora will use her particular ‘super power’, as she can talk to the afterlife.

Giulia Beyman’s writing style is clear and fluid. It’s impossible not to put yourself into Susan’s shoes and live her nightmare. I mean, how do you feel if your daughter vanishes and your friend dies? The series main character Nora Cooper, her first novel is  Words in the Dark, appears in a very discreet way on A Cry in the Shadows. I think this is a brilliant idea of Giulia Beyman of including an “indipendent” novel inside a proper paranormal mystery series. At the same time Nora’s contribution is quite original and crucial. But I don’t want to tell you more.
Furthermore, my kudos go to the Italian police Inspector who’s pretty different from my Angelo Alunni and Chase Williams detectives though. I hope to see him again in another Beyman’s novel…Who never knows!

If I have to find some kind of lack in A Cry in the Shadows, it’s all about my snooper attitude. I detected the murderer very shortly, but I looked at the bright side: I completely enjoyed the characters’ way to the truth without any worries.
