Dopo la più lunga assenza mai vista su The Travel Eater (cause universitarie imprescindibili), rieccomi pronta per farvi leggere e vedere qualcosa di bello.
Bill Viola è un video artist con una forte sensibilità per i grandi temi della nascita e della morte, come della trascendenza e della trasfigurazione. Ciò che usa come elemento-simbolo del concetto del limite è l'acqua - come passaggio di stato, come confine tra due dimensioni o forme dell'essere o come estremità radicale di quest'ultimo.
Da maggio a ottobre, undici grandiose installazioni di Bill Viola saranno a Villa Panza, a Varese, per la mostra intitolata Reflections (aperta fino al 28 ottobre 2012). Una bellissima sede, molto adatta ad un esposizione del genere, ex proprietà del mecenate e collezionista Giuseppe Panza e ora presidio FAI.
Io ci sono stata in un sabato di giugno, con mio papà. E lo consiglio a tutti voi.
After the longest absence ever seen on The Travel Eater (due to very important university commitments), here I am ready to make you read and see something beautiful.
Bill Viola is a video artist with a strong sensitivity to the major themes of birth and death as transcendence and transfiguration. What he uses as a symbol of the concept of limit is the water - as state change, as the boundary between two dimensions or between forms and extremities radicals of being.
From May to October, eleven great installations by Bill Viola will be at Villa Panza, in Varese, for the exhibition entitled Reflections (open until October 28, 2012). It's a beautiful location, very suitable for this kind of exhibition, and it was owned by the patron and collector Giuseppe Panza and now it's garrison of FAI (the Italian environmental fund).
I have been there on a Saturday in June, with my dad. And I recommend it to all of you.
Su youtube ci sono moltissime opere di Viola, che potete scoprire in anteprima. Qui ne carico lascio solo una, perchè per me è stato bello scoprirle tutte durante la mostra. Non perchè si trattino di filmati narrativi, ma perchè l'allestimento del percorso della mostra è ben studiato per permettere di scoprire l'artista anche da zero.
The innocents, il video qui sopra, è il primo del percorso a Villa Panza. La funzione che assume l'acqua nell'immaginario di Viola appare, fin da qui, evidente.
On youtube there are many works of Viola, which you can discover in preview. Here we leave you load only one, because for me it was nice to discover them all during the show. Not because they're narrative movie, but because the way of the exhibition is well designed to allow you to discover the artist also from scratch.
The innocents, the video above, is the first path to Villa Panza. The function that the water assumes in the imagination of Viola appears, even from the beginning, obviously.
La mostra si articola su più livelli e vi consiglio vivamente di seguire l'ordine pensato da Kira Perov, curatrice della mostra (e moglie dell'artista).

Three woman (che potete vedere, a bassa risoluzione, cliccando QUI) che riprende le immagini di The innocents; The darker side of dawn che consiste in 60 ipnotici minuti di alba dietro una radura e un albero, che con gli impercettibili movimenti della natura, perderà i suoi confini a causa della della luce, via via che procederà il sorgere del sole.
Tra le opere più famose esposte, sicuramente spiccava Emergence: uno studio sul quadro di Masolino intitolato Pietà.
E' una delle opere più discusse e apprezzate. Io, personalmente, sono stata maggiormente colpita da altre che lasciano meno spazio a possibili interpretazioni (per quanto erronee) edificanti o ingenue. Ciò lungi da toglierne la complessità e la forza d'impatto.
The exhibition is divided into several layers and I recommend you follow the order designed by Kira Perov, curator of the exhibition (and wife of the artist).
A succession will be:
Three woman (which you can see, in low resolution, clicking HERE), which replied images from The Innocents; The darker side of dawn, which consists of 60 minutes of hypnotic sunrise behind an hill and a tree that, showing the subtle movements of nature, will lose its borders because of the light when the sun will be rised.
Among the most famous works exposed, it definitely stood out Emergence: a study on the painting by Masolino titled Pietà (Pity).
It's one of the most discussed and appreciated works. I, personally, have been most impressed by other works that leave less space for possible (even if erroneous) edifying or naive interpretations. Anyway I'm far from belittle the complexity and impact of it.
Tra una metà e l'altra della mostra, si passa attraverso i corridoi e le stanze della Villa, le quali sono solite ospitare altre opere e esposizioni. All'epoca, noi curiosammo tra le stanze illuminate da Dan Flavin di cui la villa Panza vanta la più grande concentrazione di opere in esposizione permanente.
Consiglio la visita anche di quest'area della Villa. Io l'ho trovata ipnotica e molto interessante.
Between a half of the exhibition and the other, you have to go through the corridors and rooms of the Villa, which are used to accommodate other works and exhibitions. At the time, we browsed between rooms lit by Dan Flavin: the villa Panza boasts the largest concentration of his works on permanent exposition.
I recommend also to visit this area of the Villa. I found it very interesting and hypnotic.
Come ultima opera della mostra Reflection, al piano terra della Villa, nella zona delle scuderie, è installato un trittico: nascita e morte nella loro più limpida realtà. In mezzo: il confine. Acqua.
As a final work of the exhibition Reflection on the ground floor of the villa, in the stables, is installed a triptych: the birth and death in their clearest reality. In the middle: the border. Water.
Infine una curiosità: ogni giovedì la mostra rimane aperta fino alle 22 per l'iniziativa "Bill Viola alla Luce delle stelle" e il ristorante Luce propone la "Cena in Viola", un menù multisensoriale come omaggio all'artista. 30€ su prenotazione obbligatoria 0332242199.
Insomma: per chi conosce questo artista e a maggior ragione per chi non lo conosce: se avete l'opportunità di raggiungere e visitare Villa Panza, non fatevela sfuggire. Credo che per il suo contenuto, per l'istallazione e il percorso così strutturato sia una delle migliori mostre a cui ho assistito ultimamente.

In short, for those who know this artist and even more so for those who do not know: if you have the opportunity to reach and visit Villa Panza, do not miss it. I believe that because of its content, for the installation and the structured way, it has been one of the best exhibition I attended recently.
