sciarpa scialle - scarf shawl

sono impazzita quando ho visto questo cardigan fatto da sciarpe. che meraviglia!! e anch'io avevo un paio di sciarpe tipo pashmina che non usavo più e volevo usare per recrearlo.
i fell in love when i saw this scarf cardigan. amazing!! and i also had a couple of pashmina-type scarves that i didn't use anymore and wanted to use them to recreate it.

solo che non è disponibile un tutorial (ho anche scritto all'autrice, ma preferiva non condividerlo perché forse venderà questi capi). quindi ho studiato le foto e ho cercato di capire come fosse fatto, facendo prove con le mie sciarpe,  ma non ci riuscivo. ecco alcuni miei studi che ho fatto.

except there's no tutorial (i even wrote to the author, but she preferred not to share it because she might end up selling these cardigans). so i studied the photos and tried to figure out how it's put together, fiddling around with my own scarves, but i couldn't figure it out. here are some of my notes and sketches that i made.

ma se vedi nel centro, ho trovato quello che mi sembrava un'altra idea interessante, di fare una specie di scialle con le maniche che si facenvano grosse come due palloni. ci voleva una sola sciarpa per questa idea quindi mi sono messa in moto.
but if you look in the middle, i came up with what seemed like a different interestings idea, to make a sort of shawl with puffy sleeves. all i needed was one scarf for this idea, so i got to work.

prima ho misurato quanto dovevano essere lunghe le maniche e ho tagliato quella lunghezza dalla sciarpa (a sinistra). 
first i measured how long the sleeves needed to be and cut off that length from the scarf (on the left).

poi ho tagliato quella parte a metà per creare i due pezzi.
then i cut that part in half to make two pieces.

e ho cucito dei tubi per le maniche. semplice, no? solo che non avevo misurato bene quanto dovevano essere larghe le maniche per passare sopra le mie spalle e queste non riuscivo neanche ad alzare fino alle spalle comunque. opps... quindi ho dovuto togliere un po' della stoffa e accontentarmi di maniche che non arrivano fino in su.
and i sewed tubes for sleeves. easy, right? except i hadn't properly measured how wide the sleeves had to be to go over my shoulders and i couldn't even get them all the way up my arm anyway. oops... so i had to cut off a bit of fabric and make do with sleeves that didn't go all the way up.

poi ho tolto la frange dal secondo, più lungo, pezzo.

then i cut off the fringe from the second, longer, piece.

su entrambi le estremità ho fatto due linee di cuciture molto lunghe senza fissare le cuciture all'inizio e alla fine. 
i sewed two lines on each end with long stitches and without tacking down at the beginning and end.

in questo modo si possono tirare i fili e far arricciare il tessuto.
this way you can pull the threads and ruffle the fabric.

si infila una manica dentro questa parte arricciata (diritto contro diritto) e si spillano insieme, aggiunstando i ricci uniformamente. poi si cuce il tutto insieme.
slip one sleeve inside this ruffled part (right sides together) and pin together, adjusting the ruffles so they're not all bunched up. then sew it all together.

si apriva un po' troppo la sciarpa vicino alle maniche, quindi l'ho cucito chiuso per un pezzo. se lo dovessi fare di nuovo, farei questa parte prima di attaccare le maniche.
the scarf opened up a bit near the sleeves, so i sewed it shut a little. if i were to do this again, i'd do this part before attaching the sleeves.

ricordate che ho tagliato della stoffa in eccesso dalle maniche che risultavano troppo lunghe (grazie al mio errore di calcolo...)? ho cucito i pezzi insieme, l'ho tagliato come una striscia lunga e poi ho piegato i bordi all'interno della striscia e l'ho cucito per creare una specie di laccio.

remember how i cut off the excess fabric from the too-long sleeves (thanks to my misjudged calculation...)? i sewed the pieces together,  cut it out like a long strip, and folded in the edges and sewed it into a sort of long cord.

prima pensavo di fare una specie di allacciatura sul davanti, un po' stile medievale. era una buona idea, ma per niente il mio stile, quindi ho deciso di cucirlo sul retro dello scialle in una forma che E' molto il mio stile...
at first i thought i'd add rivets on the front and lace this through them, kind of medieval style. it was a good idea, but not at all my style, so i decided to sew it onto the back of the shawl in a shape that IS very much my style...

... lo spirale!
... a spiral!

c'era l'ultimo pezzetto di tessuto, la seconda frange, e mi dispiaceva sprecarlo. 
there was also the last fabric scrap, the second fringe, and i hated to waste it.

quindi l'ho cucito lungo la parte superiore dello scialle, intorno al collo e girando davanti. 
so i sewed it along the top part of the shawl, around the neck and passing onto the front.

qui sopra si vede l'effetto della frange davanti e della cucitura che ho aggiunto vicino alle maniche. (e anche la collana "nido" che mi ha regalato sheri.)

here you can see the effect of the fringe in the front and the stitching i added near the sleeves. (and also the bird's nest necklace that sheri gave me.)

e qui invece ho tirato su la spalla a pallone per far vedere fin dove arriva la manica. stringe abbastanza per stare più o meno ferma, ma dopo un po' comincia a scendere. quindi se lo fai tu, fa attenzione per farla abbastanza larga per passare sopra le spalle!
and here i pulled the puffy shoulder part up to show where the sleeves arrives up to. it's tight enough to stay more or less in place, but after a bit it starts to slip down. so if you make this, be sure to make it wide enough to slip over your shoulders!

si può pure sempre usarla anche come una sciarpa normale. lo spirale diventa un elemento visuale interessante. (vi ricordate dei miei jeans abbelliti?)
you can also just wear it as a regular scarf. the spiral becomes an interesting visual element. (remember my vine-embellished jeans?)

è decisamente diverso dal cardigan che mi ha ispirato all'inizio e non sono sicurissima che lo userò, ma è un pezzo davvero unico e anche divertente!
it's totally different  from the cardigan that inspired me in the beginning and i'm not totally sure that i'll actually wear it, but it's certainly a unique piece and pretty fun, too!
