Sean

Sean is a 14 minute documentary in which director Ralph Arlyck interviews 4 year old Sean in his apartament in San Francisco in 1969. San Francisco in that period was the epicentre of the hippie culture and probabily one of the most mixed cities in the Western World. Sean used to live in his house together with his parents and every sort of humanity passing by, and the documentary shows things that obviously made audience talk, culimating in the child saying he smokes pod.

It’s interesting and gripping also, because it makes emerge – in a extremely naive way – lots of the contradictions of that life style [which was Arlyck's aim, who was far from being a neutral observer I think]. For example, on one side you have a child allowed to smoke pod, but on the other side, when Arlyck asks him if he will be cleaning the deck on the boat his father is building, the answear is “No, that’s my mother’s job”. Pretty conservative.

So, you should watch it, or you could read the synthesis I did. It took me a while to select and mount the frames in order to make “coherent blocks”, but it worthed the pain, despite being a low budget product the way the scenes were directed and mounted is pretty smart too [for example, Arlyck put his camera on a skateboard and followed Sean around, in order to film more or less from the high of a 4 year old child].

And there is also another longer documentary Arlyck did in 2005, in which he meets grown up Sean and his parents, and somehow shows how it all levelled up and normalized eventually, making that period feel like a dream, a brief escape from real life. It’s in six parts, and starts from here.

San Francisco in quel periodo era l’epicentro della cultura hippie, e probabilmente una delle città col più alto tasso di diveristà culturale dell’Occidente. Sean viveva in casa sua coi suoi genitori e ogni sorta d’umanità che passava di lì, e il documentario ovviamente mostra cose che hanno fatto parlare il pubblico, culminanti col bambino che afferma di fumare l’erba.

E’ interessante e anche coinvolgente, perchè fa emergere in modo innocente molte delle contraddizioni di quello stile di vita [che era poi l'obbiettivo di Arlyck, ben lontano dall'essere un osservatore neutrale credo]. Per esempio, da un lato abbiamo un bambino a cui viene permesso di fumare erba, ma dall’altro, quando Arlyck gli chiede se aiuterà sua madre a pulire il ponte della barca che suo padre sta costruendo, la risposta è “No, quello è compito di mia madre.” Piuttosto conservatrice come risposta.

Quindi dovreste guardarlo, o potretse leggere la sintesi che ne ho fatto. Ci è voluto un po’ a selezionare e montare le immagini in modo da cerare “blocchi coerenti”, ma ne è valsa la pena, nonostante sia un prodotto low budget, il modo in cui è stato girato e mortato è anch’esso piuttosto brillante [per esempio, Arlyck ha messo la sua videocamera su uno skateboard e ha seguito Sean in giro, così da fare le riprese più o meno dall'altezza di un bambino di quattro anni].

E c’è anche un documentario più lungo diretto da Arlyck nel 2005, nel quale incontro Saen adulto e i suoi genitori, e mostra in qualche modo come tutto si sia poi normalizzato, facendo sembrare quel periodo una specie di sogni, una breve fuga dalla vita vera.
