Sicilian Christmas traditions: Nuven'i Natali

My friends, how about going in Sicily to discover some Christmas traditions ?Christmas is near and we have already set up the crib and the Christmas tree . In Sicily it is time for the Nuven'i Natali ( the Christmas novena ) . What is novena ? Well, It is a  Christmas carol sung for nine days before the Christmas eve. Today  this tradition  is still practiced only in some Sicilian villages. So what’s up? Basically the ninnariddarior the street musicians come in the houses and play the novena  in front of the crib . What do you think could sing the ninnariddari ? Obviously the  ninnareddi -traditional Sicilian Christmas carols very popular until the nineteenth century. If we want  to be more exact, the novena is a prayer. So these sweet songs were like the prayers dedicated to the Nativity .
There also are the ciaramiddari- they are pipers . In every age ( yesterday as nowadays) you have to give  a tip the these street musicians after their exhibition. All of them  are very enjoyable  to listen : they are the testimony of the popular folklore mixed to the Catholic religion. Some  songs  dedicated to the Nativity were created above all between the fourth and ninth century. Every song has a part of improvisation. If you do not want to miss this Sicilian tradition you can find it in Licata.  On December 8 and December  13 ( St. Lucia ) the street musicians are all around the town , the other days they will go home by home. Amici miei che ne dite di fare un salto in Sicilia per scoprire qualche tradizione natalizia?
Il Natale è oramai alle porte e abbiamo tutti allestito presepe ed albero di Natale. In Sicilia è quindi tempo di dedicarsi  A Nuven’i Natali ( la novena natalizia). Che cosa è questa novena? Ebbene è un canto natalizio che si soleva fare 9 giorni prima della vigilia di Natale e che in realtà si pratica ancora solo in certi paesi della Sicilia. In pratica arrivavano i ninnariddari o dei suonatori di strumenti a fiato e suonavano questo canto di fronte al presepio. Cosa pensate potessero cantare i ninnariddari? Ovviamente i ninnareddi, canzoni cantate di notte molto diffuse fino al XIX secolo. Se vogliamo fare precisione la novena è anche una preghiera. Quindi questi dolci canti erano delle sorte di preghiere dedicate alla nascita del Bambino Gesù. Si possono trovare anche gli ciaramiddari che sono gli zampognari. Allora come oggi i suonatori ricevono un compenso per le loro suonate.  Sono affascinati da ascoltare: sono la testimonianza di come il folclore si è mescolato alle esigenze della religione cattolica creando, soprattutto fra il  IV e il IX secolo dei canti specificatamente dedicati alla natività pur lasciando ampio spazio all’improvvisazione. Se non volete perdere questo spettacolo della tradizione sicuramente a Licata potrete vedere i suonatori a domicilio oppure esibirsi pubblicamente il giorno 8 Dicembre e il giorno 13 dicembre ( santa Lucia).Per chi fosse lontano?
