L’ho incontrato a New York Sid Kaplan. Fotografo e stampatore di prim’ordine.
Nato e cresciuto nella Grande Mela, vive - cosa più unica che rara - da ventidue anni nello stesso appartamento ad Alphabet City.
Una stanza con angolo cottura, un bagno e la camera oscura in fondo al corridoio.
La Polaroid che gli scatto a pranzo finisce dritta sul muro, a fianco di un altro ritratto che porta la firma di Robert Frank - mi scuserete se io per queste piccole cose ancora mi emoziono.
Sid stampa per lui dal 1969.
Lo sguardo torna sul muro; vecchie e nuove foto di famiglia. I suoi cinque nipoti, Sid in compagnia dell’amico Allen Ginsberg, seduto su una panchina insieme a “Mr. Frank”.
Quanti ricordi caro Sid. Quanta semplicità nel tuo sorriso schivo e rassicurante.
A tutti quelli che necessitano di lustrini e paillettes, che credono ciecamente nella fotografia di tendenza. A chi si perde ancora in lunghe, noiose e quanto mai sterili discussioni su qualità e nitidezza, rispondo soltanto con quel sorriso.
Con l’umiltà di un uomo che la fotografia - quella vera - l’ha vissuta fino in fondo.
Al di fuori dai palcoscenici finti e pretenziosi, al di fuori dalla presunzione dei mediocri.

I met Sid Kaplan in New York. He’s a photographer and legendary darkroom Master.
Born and raised in the Big Apple, he’s been living for twenty-two years in the same apartment in Alphabet City.
One room with kitchenette, a bathroom and a darkroom at the end of the corridor.
The Polaroid that I shoot during our lunch goes right up to the wall, next to a Robert Frank picture. What a honour!
Sid is been printing for him since 1969.
I keep looking at the wall. New and old family photos. His five grandchildren, Sid with his friend Allen Ginsberg, sitting on a bench with “Mr. Frank”.
How many memories dear Sid! What a simple smile!
To all those who blindly believe in trendy photography. To all those who lose themselves in long and boring discussion about quality and sharpness, I want to reply only with that smile.
With the humility of a great photographer. Without the arrogance of mediocre people.
