Sorpasso 1100 by EEM

The MotoGuzzi V11 "Sorpasso". A classic muscle cafe racer by Emporio Elaborazioni Meccaniche

The V11 isn’t probably the lightest and most charming bike produced by Guzzi: lots of plastic, big tail, massive front-end and big oil pipes do not make the V11 such an eye candy. But it’s got a nice and strong engine… In Rome, the EEM team invested on what is hidden under the plastic and beyond the heavy shape of the bodywork to bring out the classic Guzzi style. Last July, I made some pics of this work in progress, and I immediately realised that it would have resulted in an extraordinary piece of iron. 
Probabilmente, la V11 non è la moto più leggera e affascinante prodotta dalla Guzzi: un sacco di plastica, una grossa coda, un frontale massiccio e grossi tubi dell’olio a vista non ne fanno esattamente un piacere per gli occhi. Ma ha un motore bello e forte... A Roma, la squadra di Emporio Elaborazioni Meccaniche ha voluto investire su ciò che si nasconde sotto la plastica e oltre le pesanti linee della carrozzeria di serie per far emergere il classico stile Guzzi. Lo scorso luglio, ho fatto alcune foto di questa moto, ancora incompleta, e mi sono subito reso conto che ne sarebbe risultato  uno straordinario pezzo di ferro. 



They started from the back end of the bike, building a new subframe to make the shaft drive appear at its best. For the same reason they chose a very short muffler. On the subframe they put an original Guzzi fiberglass racing tail, which they had found digging in the swap and meets. The fiberglass tail was everything but perfectly shaped and needed a lot of work to be fixed and to fit onto the bike. But it’s the same old story: at EEM they love the old handmade pieces and they believe that defects are actually... features! To make the Sorpasso street legal (well, let's say: acceptable for use on open roads) maintaining the clean lines of the racing tail, they emedded a taillight and indicators into it, the latters being a couple of turn lights coming from an old FIAT car, properly customized. 
Hanno iniziato dal retrotreno, realizzando un nuovo telaio ausiliario per mettere in evidenza la trasmissione cardanica. Per lo stesso motivo, hanno scelto un terminale di scarico molto corto. Sul telaio sottosella hanno messo una coda originale Guzzi in vetroresina, trovata ravanando tra i mercatini. La coda era tutto tranne che perfetta e ha avuto bisogno di un bel po’ di lavoro per essere riparata e calzare bene sulla moto. Ma è la solita storia: alla EEM amano i pezzi antichi fatti a mano e credono che i difetti siano in realtà… caratteristiche! Per rendere la Sorpasso accettabile per l’uso stradale, lasciando le linee pulite della coda sportiva, vi hanno incastonato un fanalino posteriore e le frecce, queste ultime provenienti da una vecchia FIAT, opportunamente modificate. 



When they came to the front of the bike, Dopz, Skizzo and co. chose a complete Ducati 998 front end, including Showa forks and Brembo braking system. The top plate of the triple tree was modified and drilled in order to embed the two oil tanks of the front brakes and of the idraulic clutch. The result is the clean flat line of the dashboard. Since the oil tanks had to be very tiny, our heroes designed and built a communicating-vessel-system to control the oil level. 
Giunti alla parte frontale, Dopz, Schizzo e co. hanno scelto un avantreno completo Ducati 998, con forcella Showa e impianto frenante Brembo. La piastra di sterzo superiore è stata modificata e forata per incorporare i serbatoi dell’olio dei comandi idraulici di frizione e freno. Il risultato è la linea piatta pulita del cruscotto. Poiché i serbatoi dell'olio dovevano essere molto piccoli, i nostri eroi hanno progettato e costruito un sistema di vasi comunicanti per mantenere il corretto livello dell'olio. 


The electric system and controls were simplified. The headlight is coming from a 1950’s Guzzi Falcone Sport. It has been restored and treated to maintain the worn effect. Same treatment was reserved to the fuel tank cap, the engine crankcase and the rear subframe. The tank is from a Suzuki GSX1100 from the early eighties and was heavily reworked to make it slimmer. Since the stock V11 tank hosts a fuel pump, changing it was an additional headache. The solution found by EEM was to add to the new external fuel pump a pressure switch below the tank. Finally, the oil duct system was redesigned and modified all over in order to hide the ducts and improve performances.
Impianto e comandi elettrici sono stati semplificati. Il faro viene da un Falcone Sport degli anni cinquanta. E 'stato restaurato e trattato per mantenere l'effetto anticato. Stesso trattamento è stato riservato per il tappo del serbatoio del carburante, il basamento del motore e il telaietto posteriore. Il serbatoio è di una Suzuki GSX1100 dei primi anni ottanta ed è stato significativamente modificat per renderlo meno ingombrante. Dal momento che il serbatoio di serie della V11 ospita una pompa carburante, cambiarlo ha comportato un ulteriore mal di testa. La soluzione trovata da EEM è stata di aggiungere alla pompa carburante esterna un pressostato sotto il serbatoio. Infine, il percorso esterno dell'olio è stato ridisegnato e modificato quasi ovunque per nascondere i condotti e migliorare le prestazioni. 




The color scheme of the bike is inspired by the original color schemes of the legendary Guzzi V7 from the seventies. This beauty was named Sorpasso after the title of an Italian cult movie of the early sixties, very well known in Italy, and it sounds to me very appropriate... I told you several years ago: these guys rock!
Alla moto sono stati dati colori ispirati alle mitiche V7 degli anni settanta. Questa bellezza è stata chiamata Sorpasso in omaggio al film di Dino Risi del 1962... E mi pare molto adatto... Ve lo dissi già qualche anno fa: questi ragazzi ci sanno fare!
