The plot revolves around a schoolteacher, Johnny Smith, who awakens from a coma finding he has psychic powers. The relentless cold atmosphere that seems to envelop the whole movie it's due to an unexpected deep freeze on the set, in Ontario, nevertheless this atmosphere adds a touch of mystery and loneliness. Awakening it's a Cronenberg peculiar element that we can see in his other films, like eXistenZ: awakening leads to a new life changing the space-time coordinates. In fact Johnny finds his psychic powers when he awakens from coma and the two characters in eXistenZ always fall asleep and wake up in reality or in the videogame, so they always change in different dimensions.

L'atmosfera fredda e nebbiosa che persiste in tutto il film e che accompagna le azioni del protagonista, conferendo maggiormente il senso di emargiazione e diversità che vive il protagonista, è dovuto ad un effetto naturale del clima rigido in Ontario, che è stato set del film proprio in quel periodo rivelatosi inaspettatamente freddo.Il risveglio è un tema che ritorna spesso nei film di Cronenberg, come ad esempio in eXistenZ: il risveglio conduce ad una nuova vita in un contesto spazio-temporale diverso: in eXistenZ i due protagonisti si addormentano e si svegliano nella dimensione reale o in quella del gioco, qui il protagonista ritorna temporaneamente dall'aldilà per compiere una missione.
