Siamo rientrati dal viaggio in Inghilterra una decina di giorni fa, ormai, ma in tutti noi presenti al Forum degli Agenti 2012, lo scorso 3 Novembre a Tunbridge Wells, rimane il ricordo di una giornata trascorsa con gli amici e collaboratori di sempre, una giornata di condivisione e confronto di esperienze che ha arricchito tutti i partecipanti. E il ricordo e il ringraziamento va in particolare a Maggie Anderson, la nostra più affezionata collaboratrice, che in quell’occasione ci ha regalato un appassionato racconto della sua personale storia del TGS Eurogroup, dal momento in cui è stata per la prima volta coinvolta nell’associazione fino al suo attuale impegno come coordinatrice generale.

Igino
A Little bit of History!
- In 1968
Father Berti, a Salesian priest and founder of TGS Eurogroup sent the first TGS student groups England. At that time and for the next few years TGS students came to England under the umbrella of a bigger commercial organisation, staying in Godalming and Guildford.
- In 1974
A friend of mine contacted me to say that the leader of the group of Italians she was teaching at the time had approached her to ask if she knew of anyone who would set up a centre for them so that they could come to England independently as TGS Eurogroup. This was to be my introduction to TGS and 39 years later I am still here! During that time my role has been ever changing. I have been a local agent, teacher, host family, finance co-ordinator and now UK General Manager!
- In 1975
I established the Coulsdon centre and the Guildford centre continued with the help of contacts made during the preceding years.
- New Centres
Over the next few years, it was my job to establish new TGS centres. This involved finding local agents and teachers as well as finding venues for morning school and evening activities and suggesting trip destinations and making the necessary bookings. This was a daunting task made possible by locating the centres not only in suitable towns but also where I had friends who could be persuaded to become local agents! Hence we established Caterham, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Dorking.
- FB visits to England
Although I met Father Berti in Italy during these early years, he could not be persuaded to venture to England until sometime in the early 80’s.
After that he became a regular visitor during each summer and in the autumn too.
- Flourishing Centres
During the 80’s & 90’s our groups flourished with two groups visiting each centre, each year – one in July and one in August. At some point we closed the Coulsdon & Dorking centres in response to the economic climate at the time but in due course both centres reopened although more recently the Dorking centre has finally closed.
How things have changed!
- The early days
All correspondence, lists and information, were in long hand, in Italian and sent by post. Luckily I had a friend who was able to help me with translations and after attending Italian classes, I was able to understand enough written Italian to gather an understanding of what was written!
- Sergio
Before my role in TGS finance, Father Berti had a right hand man, Sergio, who spent the summer here in England to oversee each centre and distribute the cash needed. Coulsdon HSBC held the TGS account and cash was withdrawn and then distributed to the leaders in each centre and to me to pay the agents, host families & teachers etc! It was always a great worry to us that Sergio travelled around on public transport; sometimes up in London with several thousands of pounds in his TGS back pack!
- Cheques & A Car
As time progressed, payments to families etc. were made by cheque – much safer and much more professional, but for me, a long and laborious process usually resulting in writers cramp!
In time too, Sergio progressed to a car to do his rounds, which made everything both safer and more practical. It was the job of my husband and I to purchase a car for him at the beginning of each summer and then sell it at the end of the summer hopefully for what we had paid for it and sometimes for a little more!
- Today, Computers
Today we are computerised in all our administration and as time goes on we get better and better at it!
- England by Coach
There were a few years when TGS came to England by coach, which was quite a venture! The coaches stayed with their group and were used each day to transport the students and take them on outings. In Coulsdon it was quite a spectacle to see the coach driver clad in his waterproofs and wellingtons hosing down his coach each morning during school time!
- The Year 2000
In the year 2000, sadly Father Berti died; an incredible man who gave so much in all he did in his work for young people, leaving a legacy which inspired a group of our TGS leaders to continue his good work through the TGS Committee and it’s present President, Igino.
- Many Stories to Tell
There are so many stories to tell but our time is limited and precious but hopefully I have given you a little insight into the way we were and how we have progressed over the years to TGS 2012.
- Today
I am proud to be part of a New TGS, which has continued in Father Berti’s memory through the efforts, and dedication of Gino … the TGS Committee … and the leaders of TGS … continuing and developing the valuable work with young people that F Berti began so many years ago.
Un po’ di storia!
- Nel 1968
Don Dino Berti, il sacerdote salesiano fondatore del TGS Eurogroup, inviò i primi gruppi di studenti TGS in Inghilterra. A quel tempo e per gli anni immediatamente seguenti gli studenti TGS anni giungevano in Inghilterra sotto l’egida di una più grande organizzazione commerciale, per soggiornare a Godalming e Guildford.
- Nel 1974
Un’amica mi contattò per dirmi che il leader del gruppo di Italiani a cui stava insegnando in quel periodo l’aveva avvicinata per chiederle se conosceva qualcuno interessato a mettere in piedi un centro per loro affinché potessero venire in Inghilterra in modo indipendente come TGS Eurogroup. Questo sarebbe stato il mio ingresso ufficiale nel TGS e 39 anni dopo sono ancora qui! In quest’arco di tempo il mio ruolo è mutato di continuo. Sono stata agente locale, insegnante, famiglia ospitante, coordinatrice amministrativa e ora “UK General Manager”!
- Nel 1975
Ho aperto il centro di Coulsdon e il centro di Guildford continuò con l’aiuto di contatti avuti negli anni precedenti.
- Nuovi Centri
Negli anni successivi era mio compito aprire nuovi centri di TGS. Questo comportava trovare agenti locali e insegnanti così come luoghi sedi per scuola alla mattina e per le attività serali, suggerire le mete delle gite e fare le prenotazioni necessarie. Questo era un compito arduo, reso possibile individuando i centri non solo nelle città adatte ma anche dove avevo amici che potevano essere persuasi a diventare agenti locali! In questo modo abbiamo aperto Caterham, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells e Dorking.
- Le visite di DB in Inghilterra
Anche se avevo incontrato don Berti in Italia durante questi primi anni, non è stato possibile persuaderlo ad avventurarsi in Inghilterra fino più o meno ai primi anni ‘80. In seguito divenne un assiduo visitatore ogni estate e anche in autunno.
- Il fiorire dei Centri
Durante gli anni ’80 e ’90 i nostri gruppi fiorivano, con due gruppi in visita ad ogni centro, ogni anno – uno in luglio e uno in agosto. A un certo punto abbiamo chiuso i centri di Coulsdon e Dorking in risposta al clima economico del momento ma a tempo debito entrambi i centri sono stati riaperti, anche se più recentemente il centro di Dorking ha definitivamente chiuso i battenti.
Come sono cambiate le cose!
- I primi tempi
Tutta la corrispondenza, le liste e le informazioni erano scritte a mano, in italiano e inviato per posta. Per fortuna avevo un amico che è stato in grado di aiutarmi con le traduzioni e dopo aver frequentato corsi di italiano, sono stata in grado di capire l’italiano scritto abbastanza per riuscire a comprendere ciò che era scritto!
- Sergio
Prima di assumere io stessa un ruolo nella amministrazione TGS, don Dino Berti aveva un braccio destro, Sergio, che trascorreva l’estate qui in Inghilterra per sorvegliare ogni centro e distribuire il denaro necessario. La filiale della banca HSBC a Coulsdon gestiva il conto corrente TGS: da qui i contanti erano prelevati e poi distribuiti ai leader in ogni centro e a me stessa per poter pagare agenti, famiglie ospitanti, insegnanti e così via! E ‘ sempre stata una grande preoccupazione per noi il fatto che Sergio viaggiava su mezzi di trasporto pubblico, a volte fino a Londra, con diverse migliaia di sterline nel suo zaino TGS!
- Assegni & una macchina
Col passare del tempo, i pagamenti alle famiglie si fecero con assegno – molto più sicuro e molto più professionale, ma, per me, un processo lungo e laborioso, che spesso produceva crampi dello scrittore! Con il tempo, inoltre, Sergio è passato ad una macchina per fare i suoi giri, e ciò rese tutto più sicuro e più pratico. Era compito mio e di mio marito acquistare un’auto per lui all’inizio di ogni estate e poi venderla alla fine dell’estate, sperando di ottenere almeno quanto avevamo pagato per essa e a volte un po’ di più.
- Oggi, i computer
Oggi siamo computerizzati in ogni aspetto dell’amministrazione e con il tempo diventiamo sempre più bravi.
- Inghilterra in corriera
Alcuni anni il TGS arrivò in Inghilterra in corriera, il che era proprio un’avvenutra! Le corriere rimanevano con il loro gruppo ed erano utilizzate ogni giorno per il trasporto degli studenti e per le gite. A Coulsdon era proprio uno spettacolo vedere l’autista vestito di impermeabile e stivali di gomma lavare la corriera con il tubo di gomma ogni mattina durante le lezioni!
- L’anno 2000
Nell’anno 200, don Berti tristemente è mancato; un uomo incredibile che ha dato così tanto in tutto ciò che ha fatto per i giovani, lasciando un’eredità che ha ispirato un gruppo dei nostri Leader TGS a continuare il suo lavoro attraverso il Direttivo TGS e il suo attuale Presidente, Gino.
- Tante storie da raccontare
Ci sono così tante storie da raccontare ma il nostro tempo è limitato e prezioso ma spero di avervi dato un’idea di come eravamo e come ci siamo migliorati nel corso degli anni fino al TGS del 2012.
- Oggi
Sono orgogliosa di essere parte del TGS, che ha proseguito in memoria di Don Berti attraverso l’impegno e la dedizione di Gino… del Direttivo TGS… e dei leader TGS… i quali continuano ed estendono il lavoro prezioso iniziato da don Berti per i giovani tanti anni or sono.
