The Boxer Chair

Our friend Lorenzo Buratti is a rider, a motorcycle builder, an artist and a businessman, not necessarily in this order. Among the several artworks he made in the last years, this is probably my favourite... And in addition this is the very first non-scrambler custom beemer I see after several months!
Il nostro amico Lorenzo Buratti è pilota, costruttore di moto, artista e imprenditore, non necessariamente in questo ordine. Tra le numerose opere d'arte che ha creato negli ultimi anni, questa è probabilmente la mio preferita... E, in più, è finalemnte la prima BMW custom non scrambler che vedo da mesi!

"The boxer chair concept is totally linked to air cooling - Lorenzo explains - the wood panels evoke the cooling fins of the BMW airheads. So far, this was the longest creative process of all the works I've made so far. Some time ago, I bought a complete BMW R45 engine from a friend, and it has been laying on the floor of my lab for months before I make up my mind on what doing with it". 
"Il concetto che esprime la boxer chair – spiega Lorenzo - è totalmente legato al raffreddamento ad aria, i settori di legno riprendono idealmente le alette di raffreddamento delle teste BMW. Questo è stato il processo creativo più lungo fra tutti gli articol che ho creato finora. Ho comprato da un amico un motore BMW R45 completo ed è stato nel pavimento del mio laboratorio per mesi prima che tutto fosse chiaro nella mia mente". 



"The eleven wood panels are cut by hand, as always, and not exactly identical. Each has small differences that serve to give the right movement to the whole chair. Since I do not draw my projects and I do not start from a specific project but only from an idea, I actually realized completely if what I wanted to do was ok only after the first mount". 
"Gli undici pannelli di legno sono come sempre tagliati a mano e non esattamente identici fra loro, ognuno ha delle piccole differenze che servono a dare il giusto movimento all'insieme. Dato che non disegno mai nulla e non parto da un progetto preciso ma solo da un’idea, ho realizzato completamente se quello che avevo in testa era riuscito solo dopo il primo montaggio". 


"Moreover, I joined the handmade wood panels using for the first time aluminum spacers CNC machined. I normally I avoid high-tech machines since I use only hand tools, but this time I think it was worth it".
"Per la prima volta inoltre ho unito al legno lavorato a mano dei distanziali in alluminio torniti al controllo numerico, normalmente evito le macchine ad alta tecnologia e uso solo attrezzi a mano, ma questa volta credo ne sia valsa la pena".

"The panels are cut from an extremely expensive tipe of plywood suitable for outdoor, very heavy and durable: the handcutting process required a lot of time but my idea is that my works should last forever". 
"I pannelli sono tagliati da un multistrato per esterno estremamente costoso, nonché pesante e resistente, l’operazione di taglio a mano richiede moltissimo tempo ma la mia idea è che le mie creazioni devono durare per sempre".
