The Fall of Arthur, edizione inglese Deluxe 2013

Il 21 maggio 2013 è finita l’attesa per chi aspettava l’ultimo inedito, in senso cronologico, di J.R.R. Tolkien curato da suo figlio Christopher. Un testo dell’autore britannico che riporta alla luce, ancora una volta, la sua passione per i miti nordici – scandinavi e anglosassoni – che esplicita con l’uso della poesia allitterativa. Grazie a questo esercizio di stile, Tolkien scrisse e riscrisse diversi poemi inseriti anche in alcuni racconti della Terra-di-Mezzo. Prima di The Fall s’era cimentato in The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth e con le norrene The New Lay of the Völsungs e The New Lay of Gudrún oltre a Sir Gawain e il Cavaliere Verde, l’unica opera che vide pubblicata.
L'esistenza di questo poema venne rivelata già nel 1977, nella pubblicazione delle sue Lettere a cura di Humphrey Carpenter e precisamente in una lettera del 1955 di Tolkien all’americana Houghton Mifflin dove, discutendo dell’uso del verso allitterativo, spera di finire la sua "lunga poesia" The Fallo of Arthur. Nel 1981 lo stesso Carpenter, nella sua Biografia di Tolkien, pubblica alcuni brevi estratti del poema e rivela come il poema venne anche letto e approvato da E.V. Gordon e R.W. Chambers ma poi abbandonato a metà degli anni trenta.

Il manoscritto, dunque, non è un inedito del professore britannico ma, allo stesso, modo, non era nella disponibilità di tutti i ricercatori e studiosi tolkieniani. Esso è conservato in una sezione riservata della Bodleian Library di Oxford, la prestigiosa biblioteca dell’università inglese che vide Tolkien docente di letteratura e lingua anglosassone. La setssa che custodisce molti dei manoscritti tolkieniani compresi diari e carte private.
The Fall si presenta come poema allitterativo, non in rima, che s’interrompe al verso 954.
Di questa edizione deluxe, curata dal figlio Christopher Tolkien, la londinese HarperCollins ne ha prodotte duemila 

Tolkien mise mano al poema nei primi anni de 193.0 basando il suo lavoro sulle leggende del ciclo bretone del sovrano Artù ambientandolo negli ultimi giorni del suo regno quando è impegnato nel salvare il suo regno.

Note The world first publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien, which tells the extraordinary story of the final days of England’s legendary hero, King Arthur. "The Fall of Arthur", the only venture by J.R.R. Tolkien into the legends of Arthur King of Britain, may well be regarded as his finest and most skilful achievement in the use of the Old English alliterative metre, in which he brought to his transforming perceptions of the old narratives a pervasive sense of the grave and fateful nature of all that is told: of Arthur’s expedition overseas into distant heathen lands, of Guinevere’s flight from Camelot, of the great sea-battle on Arthur’s return to Britain, in the portrait of the traitor Mordred, in the tormented doubts of Lancelot in his French castle.
Unhappily, "The Fall of Arthur" was one of several long narrative poems that he abandoned in that period. In this case he evidently began it in the earlier nineteen-thirties, and it was sufficiently advanced for him to send it to a very perceptive friend who read it with great enthusiasm at the end of 1934 and urgently pressed him ‘You simply must finish it!’ But in vain: he abandoned it, at some date unknown, though there is some evidence that it may have been in 1937, the year of the publication of "The Hobbit" and the first stirrings of "The Lord of the Rings". Years later, in a letter of 1955, he said that ‘he hoped to finish a long poem on "The Fall of Arthur"’; but that day never came.
Associated with the text of the poem, however, are many manuscript pages: a great quantity of drafting and experimentation in verse, in which the strange evolution of the poem’s structure is revealed, together with narrative synopses and very significant if tantalising notes. In these latter can be discerned clear if mysterious associations of the Arthurian conclusion with "The Silmarillion", and the bitter ending of the love of Lancelot and Guinevere, which was never written.
