The Godey's Lady's Book and Magazine.

“Fashion is the voluntary slavery which leads us to think, act, and dress according to the judgment of fools and the caprice of coxcombs.”

A presto

I've already had the chance to tell you about how much flourishing, in the Victorian era, the publication of women's magazines was, widespread, with the intent to provide suggestions for cooking, home, sewing and embroidery, family, spread novels d 'appendix and let new writers to be known, and arguably the primacy in the matter should be given to the Godey's Lady's Book, otherwise known as Godey's Magazine and Lady's Book, a monthly periodical published by Louis A.Godey in Philadelphia, in the United States, from 1830 to 1898; since 1837, for a period of forty years, its editor was Sarah Josepha Hale, famous for having instituted the Thanksgiving Day, and several are the authours, who later became famous, that at the beginning of their literary career have found publication of their first pen- works here, such as Edgar Allan Poe who on Godey's published in 1834 one of his first short stories, "The Visionary" (later renamed "The Assignation") and others until the second half of the 40's of the century, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Frances Hodgson Burnett, James Kirke Paulding, William Gilmore Simms, etc.

The characteristic that made this monthly so prestigious, so as to become the most sold and appreciated during the period before the Civil War, it was the fashion plate, watercolored by hand, with which each issue opened

( Louis Godey boasted that in 1859 the publication of his book cost him $ 105,200, $ 8,000 of which only for colouring the fashion plates ) - which now allows us to see the progression in the changes that occured over time in women's clothes even in the smallest details - almost always followed by an example and a pattern with measures to make a suit or garment at home,

and the music sheet for piano in order to play the last waltz, polka or galop in vogue that was inserted in the last pages of the book.

Practical work, from embroidery to knitting, also occupied a good part of the hundreds of pages that made up the volume,

but could be missed, in your opinion, some advices about women's hairstyles?

In each issue, there were also suggestions in terms of architecture, in agreement with the styles that the Victorian era combined in an eclectic way, with a result of sure, harmonious effect

in addition to the quotation in full of poems ... well, it was a magazine aimed at satisfying every kind of curiosity, to explore every area of practical knowledge, but certainly also to raise the medium level of culture.

I forgot to add, finally, that precious art prints added up undoubted prestige to an already very prestigious text, the celebrity of which, once widespread, almost grew out of proportion, considering that in 1840 it is estimated that of the Godey's have come to circulate 70,000 copies, to arrive, in the 1860, to reach the number of 150,000 !

Today, we wouldn't certainly call such text 'monthly', but rather 'cultural compendium' !

If you like to know more about it here you can find a copy of the book of January 1851 and here a website which contains some selected images from the volumes published between 1855 and 1858.

With a hint of nostalgia, for not having been able to enjoy at its time of such an exhaustive compendium, but hopeful to have managed, at least, to let you appreciate its refinement and value, I'm sending you all my most sincere thanks and best wishes, my best wishes of much serenity.

See you soon
