The new story of Brough Superior

The Brough Superior “Pendine” was built in the early 1930s and had a guaranteed top speed of 110 mph (180 km/h)! It was based on the SS100 model but with higher performance due to the tuned engine. With this bike, in 1939 Noel Pope set two lap record at Brooklands: 106 mph (171 km/h) with sidecar, and 124 mph (200 km/h) in solo configuration. Few years later, he went to Bonneville Salt Flats to try a new record, but during his first test run he suffered a high speed crash and had to abandon his project. Some 60 years later, Mr. Mark Upham, CEO of the reborn Brough Superior decided to take up the challenge. So in August 2011, Brough was back to Bonneville with a newly built bike. The special bike for Bonneville 2011, a SS100 Retro, was Designed and built by Mr. Alastair Gibson, Brough Superior’s Chief Engineer in England, formerly chief race mechanic for BAR Honda Formula One. Joining the VGA Vintage Class for rigid frame, girder forks, un-streamlined, the Brough 1150cc was ridden by a 65 y.o. pilot, Mr. Eric Patterson, who achieved his first LSR at Bonneville in 2008 on his own Norton, in the pre-1956 pushrod Production Category at 121.79 mph (196 km/h). On September 1, 2011, Eric completed two opposite-direction runs through the measured mile at a mean average speed of 124.98 mph (200 km/h), breaking the AMA 1350-A-VG Speed Record established by a 1350cc Indian in 2005 at 114 mph! I had the honour to meet Eric G Patterson (today Mr. EGP Enterprises) and Mark Upham in Verona last January and probably I will have the chance to meet them again in Rome next Saturday at the Motodays… Their bikes will be certainly there.
