The salt and the Italian supertition

How many superstitions  we have in the popular culture! They  may seem absurd for someone who is not superstitious. They are still fun and interesting to know. So  if you observe some strange gestures, perhaps they could be the reaction of some superstition. Imagine you are in the following  situation: you are at the table and you are eating. Suddenly it happens at the table a situation that  no Italian would want to happen: the salt container falls and the salt spills on the table (or on the floor). Someone will pick up a pinch of salt and he will  throw it behind his back. The question is : why this person is  throwing away more salt when it is already fallen ? The answers could be:  1)This person is crazy or 2) He believes in the Italian superstition. In the past, the salt was a precious good and the waste was a sin.  It was thought that the devil is always behind the left shoulder, so this is why a person throws salt behind his shoulder – it is an offer against  the bad luck. If the salt spills on Tuesday  it will be a complete disaster! There is the salt in many beliefs, superstition  and traditions – it is very interesting to know them just to understand the popular culture. 
As far as concerning this superstition the I can see only one bad luck in this situation: the salt is not easy to clean and to pick up so if you throw away it in one more place I have to clean two places instead one. I will not be so happy!   :-)
Quante superstizioni abbiamo nella cultura popolare! Per quanto possano sembrare assurde da un certo punto di vista. Sono comunque divertenti ed interessanti da conoscere, almeno se ci si trova di fronte a qualche gesto strano, magari potrebbero essere la reazione di qualche superstizione. Mettiamo questa situazione: siamo a tavola  e stiamo mangiando. All’improvviso accade ciò che nessun italiano a tavola vorrebbe accadesse: il contenitore del sale si ribalta e del sale cade sulla tavola ( e per terra). Subito qualcuno prenderà un pizzico di sale e lo getterà dietro alle spalle. Domanda naturale. Perché mai questa persona getta via altro sale visto che ne è già caduto un po’? La risposta è che questa persona o è pazza oppure sta scongiurando una superstizione Italiana. In passato il sale era un prodotto prezioso e lo spreco era un peccato, così siccome si pensava che il diavolo fosse sempre appollaiato dietro la spalla sinistra, si getta del sale appunto dietro questa spalla per fargli una sorta di offerta e tenerlo buono e quindi sfuggire alla sfortuna. Se poi questo accadesse di martedì è una sciagura. Il sale è presente in tantissime credenze e tradizioni molto interessanti da sapere per conoscere un pochino di più la cultura popolare. Per quanto riguarda questa superstizione l’unica sfortuna che vedo io è che bisogna tentare di pulire una cosa non facile da raccogliere e se vi gettate il sale dietro al spalla sinistra a me toccherà pulire non più un solo punto ma ben due! La cosa non mi rende felice!
