period: february 2012Siccome ormai non ne potrete più di "random photographs from...", ma poiché è necessario che io dedichi il 90% del mio tempo allo studio per i miei esami e quindi non riesco a scrivere autentici post di viaggio o (peggio ancora) di cucina, ho deciso di parlare di ciò che per me non è un andarsene, ma sempre un tornare: la mia città.
Come sapete sono nata e cresciuta a Vercelli e questa è la mia casa - nonostante durante la settimana io viva a Milano per studiare.
Vercelli si tratta di una piccola cittadina di provincia nel Piemonte orientale. Non è grande né ricca di attrazioni a dire il vero, ma dopo essermi trasferita ho imparato ad apprezzarla di più che nell'adolescenza (durante la quale mi risultava noiosa, data la scarsità di luoghi di interesse giovanili).
Certamente Vercelli riserva, come la maggior parte delle città italiane, alcune preziose risorse artistiche, storiche e architettoniche.
Il suo fiore all'occhiello è senza dubbio la Basilica di Sant'Andrea - che vedete ritratta in queste immagini, che ho scattato quando quest'anno è caduta la prima neve. Cliccate su read more per scoprire il resto.
Since probably now you cannot stand "random photographs from..." anymore, but since it is necessary that I spend 90% of my time studying for my exams and so I've no energies and time to write authentic travel posts, or (worse yet) cooking posts, I decided to talk about what for me is never a go, but always a coming back: my hometown.
As you know I was born and grow in Vercelli and this is my home - even during the week I live in Milan to study.
Vercelli is a small provincial town in the eastern Piedmont. There's not actually big or rich attractions, but after I moved I learned to appreciate it more than during my adolescence (during which I was bored by it, because of the lack of places for young people).
Certainly Vercelli reserves, like many other Italian cities, some valuable artistic, historical and architectural resources.
Its flagship is undoubtedly the Basilica of Sant'Andrea - the one you can see in these pictures that I took after the first snow has fallen this year. Click on read more to find the rest.

La Basilica di Sant'Andrea si tratta di uno dei simboli per eccellenza della città ed è emblema del suo patrimonio artistico e culturale. Fu fondata dal Cardinale Guala Bicchieri nel 1219 e terminata nel 1227. Al suo interno è conservato il Vercelli book, altro tesoro della città poiché si tratta di uno dei pochi manoscritti rimastoci in lingua anglosassone e uno dei più antichi.
The Basilica of Sant'Andrea is the symbol par excellence of the city and is an emblem of his artistic and cultural heritage. It was founded by Cardinal Guala Bicchieri in 1219 and completed in 1227. Inside it has retained the Vercelli book, another treasure of the city because it is one of the few extant manuscripts in Anglo-Saxon language and one of the oldest.

Purtroppo non ho ancora fotografato l'interno, ma il chiostro è uno dei luoghi più suggestivi (e fotografati) della città. Di fronte alla chiesa c'è comunque un cortiletto che dà sulla strada davvero piacevole. Purtroppo d'estate diventa quasi inaccessibile per via del grandissimo numero di zanzare. Vercelli ha un clima molto umido e le risaie attorno alla città favoriscono la presenza di questo odioso insetto.
Unfortunately I have not photographed the interior yet, but the cloister is one of the most charming (and photographed) places in the city. Opposite the church is a courtyard facing the street really nice. Unfortunately, during the summer is almost inaccessible because of the large number of mosquitoes. Vercelli has a very humid climate and the rice fields around the city favor the presence of this hideous insect.

Sono sicura che avrò occasione di parlarvi di altre perle architettoniche e artistiche della città - ma questo si tratta solo di un post introduttivo. Al Sant'Andrea infatti andrebbe aggiunto almeno il ciclo di affreschi di Gaudenzio Ferrari (uno dei più celebri pittori della regione) presente nella chiesa di San Cristoforo, il Duomo, la grande Sinagoga e la chiesa di San Marco che per tre anni ha ospitato grandiose (e questo aggettivo lo dico senza influenze patriottistiche) mostre in collaborazione con il museo Peggy Gueggeniem di Venezia.
E poi le torri, gli edifici civili, il teatro.
I'm sure I will have soon occasion to speak about other artistic and architectural treasures of the city - but this is just an introductory post. In fact, I should add to Sant'Andrea, at least the cycle of frescoes by Gaudenzio Ferrari (one of the most famous painters of the region) that are in the church of St.Christopher, the Duomo, the big Synagogue and the Church of San Marco that for three years has hosted outstanding (and I say this word without patriotic influences) exhibitions in collaboration with the Peggy Gueggeniem of Venice.
And then the towers, the residential buildings, the theater too.

Come vi dicevo, questa ricchezza è tipica di ogni città italiana ed è ciò che rende l'Italia, nonostante i suoi problemi, un paese meraviglioso.
L'altro aspetto che il mio paese vanta - si sa, e questo blog lo ribadisce a partire dal suo nome - è la cucina.
E la cucina piemontese, vi assicuro non è da meno allo standard nazionale.
Oltra alla qualità, la ricchezza della cucina italiana sta nella incredibile varietà di piatti tipici. E noi sappiamo bene che non ci si limita alla pizza!
Spero piano piano di inserire post dedicati ai piatti tipici della mia terra. A Vercelli il prodotto principale è il riso (è infatti circondata da risaie: noi lo chiamiamo il "mare a quadretti" nei periodi in cui i campi sono riempiti di acqua) e tra le tantissime varietà di risotto, quella divenuta simbolo della città si chiama "Panissa" e la sua ricetta, oltre al riso e al brodo di carne, prevede fagioli, cipolla, vino rosso Barbera (un vino prodotto sempre in Piemonte), lardo, salame sotto grasso. Un piatto "leggero leggero" - ma squisito :D !
As I said, this kind of richness is typical in every Italian city and that's what makes Italy, despite its problems, a wonderful country.
On the other hand, my country has - you know, and this blog makes this clear until its name - also great food.
And food and recipes from Piedmont, I assure you is no different to the national standard.
Besides the quality, the richness of Italian food lies in the incredible variety of dishes. And we know very feel that there is not just pizza!
I hope to upload posts, little by little, during next period, dedicated to the typical dishes of my native land. In Vercelli the main product is rice (my town is surrounded by rice paddies: we call it the "sea-checked" in the periods in which the fields are filled with water) and among the many varieties of risotto, the one that has become the symbol of the city is called "Panissa" and its recipe, in addition to rice and meat soup, includes beans, onions, red wine Barbera (a wine produced in Piedmont), lard, sausage in lard. A very very "light" meal - but it's delicious :D!

Non sono da meno i nostri dolci: ora che siamo in periodo di carnevale, il dolce tipico diventano le "gale" o "bugie" - un dolce diffuso in giro per l'Italia con alcune variazioni sul tema e chiamato in ogni luogo in modo diverso (a Milano "chiacchiere", in Umbria "frappe", altrove crostoli, cenci, galane ecc..). Si tratta di un dolce molto friabile che viene fritto e cosparso di zucchero a velo o semolato. Oppure, più tipici, i "friceu" ("frittella" in piemontese), la tipica frittella con l'aggiunta di mela al suo interno.
I principi dei dolci vercellesi sono invece i "bicciolani", biscotti speziati alla cannella che prendono il loro nome dal "Bicciolano", la maschera di Vercelli (in Italia quasi ogni città ha una "maschera" tipica che viene festeggiata durante il periodo di carnevale. Sono maschere rese celebri dalla commedia dell'arte).
La regina però è invece è la Tartufata. Una torta strepitoso a base di pan di spagna, crema chantilly e una sfoglia di cioccolato. Non aggiungo nient'altro perché merita un post a parte, ma ve la mostro:
Our desserts are amazing too: now that we are in carnival time, the typical dessert becomes the "gale" (frills) or "bugie" (lies) - a sweet spread around Italy with few variations and called in different way in different places (in Milan they're "chiacchiere" (chatter) in Umbria "frappe", elsewhere crostoli, cenci, galane etc. ..). This is a very sweet crumbly that is fried and dusted with icing sugar or caster. Or, more typical, the "friceu" ("frittella" a sort of pancake in Piedmontese), the typical one but with the addition of apple inside.
The princes of desserts from Vercelli are the "Bicciolani", spiced with cinnamon biscuits that take their name from "Bicciolano", the mask of Vercelli (in Italy, almost every city has a "mask" that is typically celebrated during during carnival time. They are masks become famous thanks to the comedy of art).
The Queen, however, is instead is the Tartufata. Tartufata is an amazing cake made of sponge cake, chantilly cream and a chocolate veil. For the moment I don't add anything else because it deserves a separate post, but I show it to you:

I hope that this small, snowy introduction has moved the curiosity of some of you. Starting a small series of posts "at home" it will be easier for me to not only post pictures and a few scattered experiences that I allow myself (today it's last day for Pixar exhibition, have you already booked it ;)?), but it'll allow me to post also something that is not for me a "journey", but may be so for some readers!
