Tutorial: da vestitino a zainetto – DIY from dress to backpack

So che vi siete abituati alle mie foto, la domenica. Avrò per tempo per recuperare, anzi avrò molto da farvi vedere, ma in questo mese ho deciso di dare la priorità a tanti progetti che voglio portare a termine, come questo.
Il vestitino in maglina che vedete nella foto, infatti, non sta più a mia figlia da diversi mesi, e già a febbraio avevo comprato il cordino giallo con l’idea di realizzare uno zainetto. Poi il fatto di non essere molto brava con la macchina da cucire mi ha spinto a rimandare, finché nel weekend mi sono decisa… ultimamente ho fatto molta pratica con i sacchettini LINK, e mi sono anche detta che potevo sopperire alle mie mancanze con la bravura nel cucire il feltro. Devo dire che sono molto contenta del risultato; e questa volta sono stata persino così brava da ‘registrare’ il mio lavoro con la macchina fotografica, e ora posso mostrarvi come procedere se anche voi avete un vestitino che adorate e non volete buttarlo o darlo via…
I loved this dress of my daughter, but it was way too small now. So I found a useful way to keep it, transforming it in a little backpack. Hereafter you will find all the instructions to do the same with a dress you like… 

1-2. Tagliate via la parte superiore del vestito. Rovesciate il vestito e rimuovete eventuali elastici alle estremità. Fate un taglio a V nella parte superiore destra e nella parte sinistra; ripiegate la stoffa all’interno e cucite come nella foto. Con la macchina da cucire chiudete il lato inferiore.
1-2. Cut off the top of the dress, turn the dress upside down, and remove the elastic bands (if there is any). Make a small cut, in the shape of a ‘V’, in the upper right corner and in the left one. Fold the fabric, and sew with your machine like you see in the picture.

3. In alto, ripiegate all’interno la stoffa in modo da creare lo spazio dove far scorrere il cordino e cucite. Io l’ho fatto con il cordino dentro, ma se preferite potete inserirlo all’interno in un secondo momento (una spilla da balia può rendere l’operazione più semplice). Ripetete sull’altro lato. Annodate il cordino in modo che diventi un pezzo ‘unico’ e nascondete il nodo in uno dei due canali che avete appena cucito. Ora potete rigirare la stoffa.
3. On top, fold the fabric in a way to create space for the rope to move, and sew. I did it while the rope was inside, but if you like you can insert it afterwards (a safety pin may help you in this case). Repeat on the other side. Tie the string to ‘close’ it, and hide the knot underneath the fabric you just sew. Now you can turn the bag again.

4-5. Ora potete mettere via la macchina da cucire; passiamo al feltro. Per fissare la corda sotto le braccia ho usato due cuori di feltro (per modello ho usato un cuore che ho disegnato sulla carta): li ho fissati con il punto festone alla stoffa, tranne che al centro. Nella foto potete vedere che, per permettere al filo di scorrere, in alcuni punti ho continuato a cucire solo sul cuore.
4-5. You won’t need your sewing machine anymore; now we will work with the felt. To fix the string underneath the shoulders I used two felt hearts (I made a model in paper first): I fixed them to the fabric with a buttonhole stitch, but not in the middle. As you can see in the picture, to allow the rope to move in the middle parts the stitch is only on the felt heart.


6-7. Ho cucito dei cuori di feltro anche dove il filo scorre per rendere l’apertura più resistente, uno dentro e uno fuori per un totale di quattro cuori rossi.
6-7. I sew some small felt hearts also on the sides, where the string passes by to make it more resistant. I put one heart inside and one outside, so all in all I sew four red hearts. The bag is ready, now you can try to make your own!

Lo zainetto è pronto. Ovviamente il nostro è molto piccolo: per ora va benissimo per la statura di mia figlia, e più avanti lo userà come portabiancheria per l’asilo. Trovo che sia un bellissimo ricordo e un modo utile per conservare un indumento speciale. Chissà, magari ne farò altri partendo da vestiti più grandi... come sempre, se provate, non mancate di farmelo sapere! A presto!
