"I’m going ahead... travelling in company (Africa Twin and KTM - ed.) on the Carretera Austral. A road still under construction, full of pitfalls especially in the stretch Puhyuapi-Coyaique where the rain didn't give us a break. Visibility was very poor mainly because my goggles were filthy on both sides. A sort of Camel Trophy where we crossed water puddles 15" deep… Cannot believe that shortly after we met a bus coming from the opposite direction. In Coyaique I realized to have two broken spokes of the rear wheel... From Coiayique towards Argentina: all asphalt topped off by rain. Nothing to report, except for the excellent asado eaten at the hotel in Gobernator Gregores: just a street, 10 houses and 20 Ford Escort extreme makeover version. From Gobernator Gregores to El Calafate I expected just 300 km of regular dirt road... It proved nightmare: mud all over, deep and exhausting... Deep enough to make me fall off, fortunately without consequences for me and for the bike; just before I had to remove the front fender because the wheel wasn't running anymore. Sooner or later it had to happen. Luckily it was on the Route 40 and in the mud. I had my baptism. The Route 40 made me realize that it is not a game. It taught me that it doesn’t matter if you are a rally champion or if your bike is super tuned (and it taught it even to the Africa Twin and the KTM). The road rules, and when she decides: it’s your turn, and you go down. That's it. Before getting back into the gravel, I added a meaning to the word Infinite. I always associated this word with Giacomo Leopardi (a very famous Italian poet - ed.) and mathematics. From now on I will associate this word to this magnificent road, where every direction seems to never get to a destination: a perfect straight line that doesn’t have a start or an end... "

La visibilità era molto scarsa soprattutto perché la mascherina era sporchissima sia fuori che dentro. Un tratto da Camel Trophy dove abbiamo attraversato pozze e acqua alte 40 cm e pensare che poco dopo abbiamo incrociato un autobus in direzione contraria. A Coyaique mi sono reso conto di avere 2 raggi rotti alla ruota posteriore... Da Coiayique verso l'Argentina: tutto asfalto condito dalla pioggia. Nulla da segnalare se non l'asado mangiato in hotel a Gobernator Gregores: una via, 10 case e 20 Ford escort in versione extreme makeover. Da Gobernator Gregores a El Calafate sembravano 300 km con un po' di sterrato... Uno sterrato massacrante, tutto fango molto pesante e profondo... Profondo quanto basta per farmi andare a terra, fortunatamente senza conseguenze né per me né per la moto; poco prima ho dovuto smontare il parafango anteriore perché la ruota non girava più. Prima o poi poteva succedere, meglio se sulla Ruta 40, meglio se sul fango. Il battesimo c'è stato, la Ruta 40 mi ha fatto capire che non è un gioco, che non serve il manico né la moto super preparata (e lo ha fatto capire anche ad una Africa twin ed ad una KTM). Comanda lei e quando decide che ti tocca, vai giù. Stop. Prima di entrare nel rìpio ho aggiunto un significato alla parola infinito. Ho sempre associato questa parola a Giacomo Leopardi e alla matematica, da oggi penserò anche a questa magnifica strada dove ogni direzione sembra non avere mai una fine: una retta perfetta che non inizia e non finisce..."
