Vinum : wine fair in Alba - part 1

Vinum. Evento enogastronomico che ha mobilitato l’intera città di Alba e i vigneti di tutte le Langhe e di Roero. Un evento che è riuscito a vincere ogni previsione facendo spuntare il sole da sotto un nero strato di nuvole.
E noi c’eravamo!
Quindi tutti pronti, chè ora non vi farò sfuggire nulla di ciò che in una sola giornata siamo riusciti a fare.
Vinum. Food and wine event that mobilized the entire city of Alba and all the vineyards of Langhe and Roero. An event that has managed to win all weather forecast by making the sun appear from under a black cloud layer.
And we were there!
So all ready, now I will not let you miss anything that we could do in just one day.

L’ente del Turismo Langhe e Roero c’ha visto lungo e ha pensato di puntare sulle voci del web per promuovere l’evento e le sue iniziative. Gli hastag #AlbaRoero2012 e #AlbaCamp hanno popolato twitter (ahimè, non possedendo uno smartphone, su questo fronte resto indietro…) permettendo a chi non c’era di seguire in tempo reale. Gli altri (e qui entro in gioco anch’io), armati di reflex, hanno documentato tutto per poter rielaborare a casa e pubblicare il tutto in una serie di post.
First great emotion of the day: for the first time I have received media accreditation as bloggers. The body of Tourism Langhe and Roero has decided to focus on the voices of the Web to promote the event and its initiatives. The hashtag #AlbaRoero2012 and #AlbaCamp populated twitter (alas, not owning a smartphone, I fall behind on that front ...) allowing those who missed the event to follow it in real time. The others (and here I'm in too), armed with cameras, they documented everything to rework it at home and release it in a series of posts.

Pensavo di dividere la giornata pubblicando ora un post introduttivo, poi uno dedicato strettamente al padiglione di Vinum, e poi uno dedicato al lato gastronomico.
Sarebbe stato bello riuscire a non perdere nessun appuntamento in programma, ma la ricchezza del palinsesto (dal 28 al 1) rendeva impossibile non imporsi una scelta molto precisa e –purtroppo – riduttiva. 
So, during these days on The Travel Eater you will be able to find everything. I'd divide the day in three parts: at first an introductory post, then one dedicated strictly to the Hall of Vinum, and then one dedicated to the culinary side.
It could be nice to try not to miss any appointment, but the richness of the schedule (from 28 to 1) made ​​it impossible not to impose a very precise choice -unfortunately - reductive.

photograph: Costanza Saglioperiod: april 2012Arrivando ad Alba verso le 11.30 (io sono partita da Vercelli alle 9, con il treno, arrivata ad Alessandria alle 10.20 e c’è voluta ancora un’oretta per raggiungere Alba in macchina) e tornando con il treno da Alessandria delle 20.30, ci è stato possibile solo fare un breve giro delle piazze della città: si parte da P.zza Risorgimento, in cui erano allestiti una serie di stand già volti all’enogastronomia e un gioco per adulti e bambini, il cui scopo era riuscire a pescare, con una canna, alcuni grappoli d’uva che galleggiavano nel vino. In palio, ovviamente, una bottiglia. Io e i due amici che mi hanno accompagnata, abbiamo tentato la fortuna e l’abilità, ma, ahinoi, fallendo ;( .

We got in Alba around 11.30 (I left Vercelli at 9 a.m., with the train, and I arrived in Alexandria at 10.20 and it took another hour to reach by car Alba) and we got back by train from Alexandria at 20.30, but notwithstanding it was only possible to do a short tour of the squares of the city: it starts from Piazza Risorgimento, where they set up a series of stands already full of food and wine and a game for adults and children, that let you the possibility to win a bottle of wine if you was to be able to fish, with a cane, a few bunches of grapes floating in the wine. My two friends who accompanied me and I, of course we tried our luck and skill, but, alas, we failed ;(.

Dopo di questo, siamo andati in P.zza Savona dove l’associazione StreetFood e SlowFood offrivano l’opportunità di assaggiare i cibi da strada della tradizione italiana in tutta la sua estensione. Ma di questo vi parlerò dettagliatamente in un altro post ;).
Da lì, abbiamo girato la P.zza Elvio Pertinace in cui era allestito invece il Mercato della Terra – costituito da alcuni stands dedicati ai prodotti più tipici della zona. Continuano gli assaggi (nocciole delle Langhe strepitose) e iniziano alcune piccole degustazioni delle cantine Langhe e Roero.
Than, we went to Piazza Savona, where the Associations SlowFood and StreetFood offered the opportunity to taste the traditional Italian street food from every regions. But I shall speak in detail  about this in another post;).
From there, we walked around the Piazza Elvio Pertinace where was set up instead the Mercato della Terra - consisting of some stands dedicated to the most typical products of the area. So here tastings (Langhe hazelnuts was amazing) keep on with some small wineries of the Langhe and Roero.

 Siamo pronti ora per accedere a Vinum, che si tiene all’interno del Padiglione degli eventi in P.zza Medford.

 Prima di entrare, ci accoglie un nuovo gioco: sta volta sono messe alla prova le nostre abilità sensoriali.

 In alcuni bicchieri c'erano essenze di cui sono da riconoscere i profumi, in due bicchieri oscurati c'era del vino rosso e del bianco e bisogna riconoscere in quale vi sia l’uno e in quale l’altro. Infine, toccando e non guardando erano da riconoscere alcune tipologie di tappo da vino e spumante.
In some glasses there were essences of which you should recognize the scents, in two obscured glasses there was red and white wine and you have to recognize them. Finally, touching, and not looking you should recognize some types of cork for wine or champagne.

 Dulcis in fundo, siamo entrati. Ed è iniziata la degustazione. Ma anche di questo, vi parlerò la prossima volta.
