Who's who in fashion: L' Avvocato

Ho deciso di inaugurare una nuova mini-rubrica (per dirlo all' Inglese, che fa fico: una capsule) sulla gente che fa moda, o del mondo della moda. Non devono essere per forza miei idoli, anzi, ma hanno di sicuro un' autenticità tutta loro, un loro stile e appiglio sulle folle. Si comincia con un' icona di stile del passato, che ha inaugurato così tante mode che noi usiamo senza che forse neanche lo sappiamo. Gianni Agnelli.

I decided to open a new capsule section on the people who make the fashion .They don’t  have to be my idol, indeed, but have their style and hold on the crowd. It begins with a style icon of the past, that has opened so many fashions that we use, perhaps without we even know it. Gianni Agnelli.
I thank an expert friend and follower who wrote the 'article!
Gianni Agnelli, conosciuto da tutti semplicemente come l’Avvocato, fu un innovatore per la moda maschile: seppe lanciare mode seguite poi da molti suoi epigoni. Certe molto discutibili ma su di lui non stonavano o suonavano ridicole, come succede invece su altre persone.


Gianni Agnelli, known to all simply as “L’ avvocato” (the lawyer), was an innovator for men's fashion: he launch trends that then became  followed by many people. Some were very questionable but not ridiculous on him, differently to is what happens to other people.
Tutti ricordano l’orologio sul polsino, messo lì per riuscire a vedere l’ora senza dover tirare su la manica della giacca o camicia. Ma quali orologi era solito indossare? Sicuramente alternava orologi importanti a quelli più  comuni, come negli anni 70 il Pulsar o più recentemente un orologio in plastica al quarzo regalo dei nipoti. Tra quelli degni di nota invece l’IWC Portofino fasi lunari in oro giallo e un L.Leroy sempre in oro giallo. A lui si deve il successo del Daytona  negli anni '80 quando venne fotografato con suddetto orologio portato sul polsino della camicia. Ma ancora Cartier, o come non ricordarlo in una celebre foto scattata a Sankt Moritz dove in tenuta da sci osava polsare un enorme sub di casa Omega, il PloProf ? Solo lui poteva azzardare un subacqueo sulle piste da sci!
 
Everyone remembers the clock on the cuff, placed there to be able to see the time without having to pull up the sleeve of his jacket or shirt. But which watches he used to wear? More normal watches, such as the Pulsar in the ‘70s, up to the more important ones. Among these the IWC Portofino moon phase yellow gold and a L. Leroy in yellow gold. He was responsible for the success of the Daytona in the '80s, when he was photographed with this watch worn on the shirt cuff. But still he used Cartier, or how not to remember him in a famous photo taken in Sankt Moritz, skiing wearing a huge sub watch by Omega  the PloProf? Only he could dare a diver watch on the ski slopes!
 
Per quanto concerne l’abbigliamento non fu di certo meno estroso. Abbinava ai completi su misura di da Caraceni o di qualche sarto torinese (i tessuti li sceglieva nel negozio torinese Jack Emerson), scarpe sportive quali scarponcini alla caviglia rigorosamente Tod’s e Church’s modello Leonard ordinate presso il negozio torinese Olympic in Piazza San Carlo.
Also for the clothing he was certainly not less fancy, in fact he combined casual shoes (ankle boots, Tod's or Church's Leonard model) with bespoke suits made by Caraceni or some Turin tailor.
Ma questo non era semplicemente uno sfizio, anzi, la giustificazione era dettata da una questione di praticità, infatti non dimentichiamoci che Gianni Agnelli si ruppe la gamba destra in più occasioni: la prima durante la guerra, la seconda volta durante una folle corsa in Ferrari sulle strade della Costa Azzurra rischiando l’amputazione ma gli venne fatta salva grazie ad una complessa protesi, e l’ultima volta se la fratturò negli anni ottanta sciando.
Sempre parlando di calzature è opportuno ricordare che fu uno dei primi estimatori delle scarpe con i gommini,anche quelli con il tacchetto, che si faceva confezionare dal calzaturificio Miserocchi di Domodossola. Lui stesso forniva i pellami che si procurava durante i viaggi per il mondo, il suo colore preferito era il bordeaux, e famosi sono i mocassini realizzati con la pelle proveniente dalla FIAT che serviva per i sedili delle auto di grande cilindrata.Per gli altri capi d’abbigliamento, è impossibile non citare le camicie Brooks Brothers ( è stato uno dei primi ad indossarle importandole dall’America). Oppure altre camicie se le faceva confezionare da Sebastian, punto di riferimento della Torino bene,o Angelo Inglese, sarto di Ginosa (TA) (che realizza la camicia del principe per il matrimonio di William), che realizzava anche le polo camicia.

But this was not just a whim, rather, it was dictated by a matter of practicality, in fact, do not forget that Gianni Agnelli broke his right leg on several occasions: the first during the war, the second time in a mad race for Ferrari on the streets of the French Riviera risking amputation and the last time if the fracture while skiing in the eighties.
Speaking of shoes we have to say that he was one of the first fans of the car shoes even those with the cleat, that were created by the shoe-maker Miserocchi of Domodossola. He himself provided the leather that he procured on his trips around the world (he also used the leather used by Fiat for car of powerful engine  seats), his favorite color was burgundy.
For other articles of clothing, it is impossible not to mention the Brooks Brothers shirts (he was one of the first to wear them importing from America). He also had tailor made shirts from Sebastian, a landmark for Turin high society, or Angel Inglese, a tailor from Ginosa (Apulia), which also created for him the polo-shirts and now will create the shirt of Prince William for his wedding.
Le sue cravatte difficilmente rispettavano una buona simmetria: se un gentleman, come diceva Oscar Wilde, si riconosce dal nodo della cravatta, cosa bisognerebbe dire dell’Avvocato? Portava nodi “sbilenchi”, cravatte a mezzo busto rigorosamente larghe,eccessivamente lunghe, o ancora la base stretta della cravatta era più lunga della parte larga.
Effettivamente l’Avvocato poteva permettersi qualunque cosa: sportivi piumini con eleganti completi su misura (questo pensavo di averlo inventato io!), alternati ad elegantissimi cappotti doppio petto in cachemire, o ancora indossare la camicia in denim con il jeans, o portare il maglione girocollo con sopra la cravatta.Non so quali fragranze usasse, ma di una colonia ho la certezza, Blenheim bouquet di Penhaligon’s, la stessa di Winston Churchill.
His ties hardly were symmetric: if a gentleman, as Oscar Wilde said, is recognized by the tie, what should be said of the Advocate? He made "lopsided" knots:  short and long, too long, or the narrow base of the tie was longer than the large end.
Indeed, ""the lawyer could afford everything: sportish duvets over bespoke suits (I thought I invented it!), alternating them with elegant double-breasted cashmere coat, or he could wear a denim shirt with jeans, or wear a crew neck pull with a tie.
I'm not sure what fragrances he used, but I am sure of a Cologne, Blenheim Bouquet Penhaligon's, the same as Winston Churchill.

Concludendo, Gianni Agnelli con il suo personalissimo stile, eleganza innata, charme, sapeva creare connubi che non risultavano mai volgari, mai gridati. Fu una vera icona di stile, un vero trend setter , un precursore che seppe rivoluzionare il modo di vestire. Siamo sicuri a questo punto che al suo livello siano anche tutti quegli altri personaggi che ci propinano i vari magazine e che finiscono sulle copertine di blasonate riviste?
  

In conclusion, Gianni Agnelli with his personal style, natural elegance, charm, could create marriages that were never vulgar, never exhagerated. It was a true style icon, a true trend-setter, a pioneer who was able to revolutionize the way people dress. Are we sure that at his level are also all those other characters which various magazines palm us off with?
