Settimana scorsa vi ho parlato della magia di New York a Natale (se vuoi leggere il post lo trovi qui), ora è il turno di un'altra della mie città preferite che durante le feste diventa ancora più bella, sfavillante e tremendamente accattivante: Londra!
Londra nel periodo natalizio sprigiona tutta la sua magia! La città si illumina, ovunque risuonano dolci motivetti festivi ed è tutto un fiorire di ghirlande, corone e decorazioni di ogni tipo, dalle più semplici e tradizionali a quelle più eclettiche e bizzarre. Ecco quindi una pratica to do list per non perdere nemmeno una delle innumerevoli attrazioni che rendono la città ancora più bella!
- le luci di Natale di Londra sono uno spettacolo davvero imperdibile. Ci sono quelle tradizionali di Regent Street, quelle pazze e originalissime di Covent Garden e Seven Dials, quelle affascinanti e diverse ogni anni di Carnaby Street, sempre all'avanguardia e davvero superlative e poi ci sono gli alberi decorati e illuminati, uno più bello dell'altro e tutti da vedere. Il mio consiglio: concedersi qualche ora a zonzo senza meta, col naso rigorosamente all'insù, e ammirare tutte le spettacolari installazioni che si alternano una dopo l'altra da quartiere a quartiere.
- nel periodo di Natale i vari Farmer's Market e i mercati alimentari più famosi (Borough Market e Broadway Market solo per citarne alcuni) si riempiono di leccornie: caramelle, dolci di tutti i tipi e poi le specialità inglesi delle feste, prima fra tutte la mince pie: un rustico involucro di pasta brisee che racchiude un ripieno misto di frutta secca, uvetta, spezie e altro ancora. Indovinare tutti gli ingredienti al primo colpo è praticamente impossibile ma vale la pena continuare a tentare... e ad assaggiare!
- Se invece avete la possibilità di vivere un festeggiamento casalingo da non perdere è il Christmas Pudding, preparato a inizio Avvento così che possa riposare e completato il giorno di Natale. Da servire caldo, flambé, rigorosamente alle 15.00 durante il tradizionale discorso della Regina, con un bicchiere di Sherry o Brandy a seconda dei gusti!
- Le migliori decorazioni floreali per la casa si trovano al Flower Market di Columbia Road la Domenica mattina. Alberi piccoli e grandi adatti a tutti gli spazi, rametti di viso da appendere alle porte e tante tante bacche per dare quel tocco tremendamente accattivante e assolutamente natalizio a tutte le case. Per i più impacciati, come me, nel DIY si possono comprare per poche sterline ghirlande e corone dell'Avvento davvero speciali, una più particolare e sorprendente dell'altra!
- Non è Natale senza una scatola di latta a tema. Si trovano da Marks & Spencer, sono tutte bellissime e cambiano di anno in anno. Forme tradizionali o estrose, fuori colori e disegni festosi, dal mood vintage o norvegese, forgiate come fossero abeti o matrioske; dentro leccornie varie, non solo biscotti ma anche cioccolatini e dolcetti vari da condividere con amici e parenti nel giorno più bello. Sempre in tema shopping da non perdere la collezione natalizia di John Lewis, le vetrine di Harrods e Selfridges e le decorazioni per la casa di Antropologie.
- Un capitolo a parte per lo shopping natalizio a Londra è riservato a Liberty London: da Novembre a Gennaio il quarto piano del department store più bello in assoluto è tutto dedicato alle decorazioni per l'albero, la casa, calendari dell'Avvento, regali per grandi e piccini e poi dolci a non finire come nella migliore tradizione della festa!
- Come New York anche Londra ha il albero di Natale per eccellenza e si trova a Trafalgar Square. Dal 1947 la Norvegia dona questo meraviglioso albero alto più di 20 metri in segno di gratitudine per il supporto fornito alle truppe durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e gli inglesi, per riconoscenza, lo addobbano con migliaia di piccole luci e decori in stile norvegese.

London at Christmas time releases all of its magic! The city lights, sweet holiday tunes resound everywhere and a plethora of garlands, wreaths and decorations of all kinds, from the most simple and traditional to the most eclectic and bizarre. Here is a practice to do list for never miss one of the many attractions that make the city even more beautiful!
- Christmas lights of London are a truly unmissable. There are the traditional ones of Regent Street, those crazy and very original around Covent Garden and Seven Dials, those fascinating and different every year in Carnaby Street, cutting edge and truly superlative and then there are the trees decorated and lit, one of the most beautiful that everyone should see one day or another. My advice: spend your time wandering around aimlessly, nose strictly upward, and take in all the spectacular installations that alternate one after the other from neighborhood to neighborhood.
- over Christmas time various farmer's and the most famous food markets (Borough Market and Broadway Market just to name a few) are full of treats: candy, cakes of all kinds, and then the English specials of the parties, first of all the mince pie: a rustic pastry filled with mixed nuts, raisins, spices and more. Guess all the ingredients at the first shot is virtually impossible but it is worth continuing to groped... and enjoy!
- If you have the opportunity to experience a home celebration not to be missed is the Christmas Pudding, prepared at the beginning of Advent, so it can rest and be completed on Christmas Day. Serve hot, flambé, strictly at 15.00 so you can enjoy it while watching the Queen on tv in her traditional Christmas speech, with a glass of sherry or brandy according to taste!
- The best floral decorations for the home are on the Columbia Road Flower Market on Sunday morning. Large and small trees suitable for all spaces, sprigs face to hang on doors and many many berries to give that touch tremendously appealing and absolutely Christmas to all homes. For the more awkward, like me, in DIY can buy for a few pounds garlands and wreaths really special, a more particular and surprising the other!
- It's not Christmas without a tin. They are found by Marks & Spencer, they are all beautiful and change from year to year. Traditional forms or imaginative, off festive colors and designs, from the vintage mood, Norwegian, forged as they were firs or dolls; into delicacies, not only cookies but also chocolates and cupcakes to share with friends and relatives in the most beautiful day. About holiday shopping do not miss the Christmas collection of John Lewis, Harrods and Selfridges goods and the decorations for the house by Anthropologie and Liberty London.
- A separate chapter for Christmas shopping in London is reserved for Liberty London: from November to January the fourth floor of the department store most beautiful of all is all dedicated to the Christmas decorations for your tree, house, Advent calendars, gifts for young and old, and then rolling to no end in the best tradition of the festival!
- Like New York City also London has the Christmas tree for excellence and it is located in Trafalgar Square. Since 1947 Norway gives this wonderful tree 20 meters or more high in gratitude for their support to the troops during the Second World War and the British, for gratitude, decorate it with thousands of tiny lights and decorations in Norwegian style.
