a tale of two t-skirts

sono emozionatissima! sono stata accettata a contribuire a Refashion Co-op! è un blog con 100 blogghisti di tutto il mondo che scrivono dei loro progetti recuperando e adattando i vestiti per creare vestiti rinati, unici e meravigliosi. lo leggo ogni giorno e mi ispira moltissimo. mi sento onorata di farci parte anch'io. quindi per il mio primo progetto, scrivo di due gonne che ho creato da magliette che non indossavo più per un motivo o l'altro.
i'm thrilled! i've been accepted to contribute to Refashion Co-op! i just love this blog with 100 contributors around the world who write about their projects upcycling and refashioning clothes to create reborn, unique, marvelous things to wear. i read it every day and it never ceases to inspire me, so i feel quite honored to participate. so, for my first project, i'm writing about two skirts that i made from t-shirts that i didn't wear anymore for one reason or another.

per la prima gonna ho utilizzato due magliette che ho comprato 5 anni fa e usato moltissimo. ma mi andavano un po' corti entrambi e non sopporto più vestiti che lasciano vedere la mia pancia non tanto piatta. non ho scattato foto mentre la cucivo, ma ho messo la maglietta viola sotto sopra, l'ho aperta sulle spalle, ho tolto le maniche e l'ho tagliata ad un'angolo. poi ho fatto una specie di patchwork sul dietro, cercando di far andare le righe in direzioni diversi. ho usato quella nera per fare una fascia senza elastico in vita e per la parte davanti.
for the first skirt i used two t-shirts that i bought 5 years ago and loved. but they were both a bit too short for me and i really can't stand showing off my not-so-flat tummy. i didn't take any pictures while i was sewing, but i turned the purple shirt upside down, cut open the shoulders, took off the sleeves and cut it at an angle. then i did a sort of patchwork behind, trying to get the stripes to go in different directions. i used the black shirt to make a waistband without elastic and then the part in front.

ho preso spunto da due progetti dal libro "reinventa i tuoi vestiti per negati" (nella versione in inglese si chiamano "upside-down skirt in a topsy-turvy world" e "freeform and frill skirt"), ma ho fatto alla me, non seguendo alla parola le istruzioni. (un'altro progetto che ho fatto da questo libro era il mio poncho da sciarpa.)
i based this on two projects from the book "reconstructing clothes for dummies" ("upside-down skirt in a topsy-turvy world" and "freeform and frill skirt"), but i did it my own way, not following the instructions perfectly. (another project i did from this book was my scarf-poncho.)

ecco la gonna vista da dietro. ho lasciato le cuciture interne senza rifinirle perché si può con la maglina. l'orlo, invece, ho preferito finire con la macchina taglia e cuci. la fascia in vita è molto facile da fare (ho fatto come con i pantaloni pre-maman), ma alla fine non la preferisco solo con il tessuto, perché finisce sempre per allentarsi e si sposta troppo facilmente.
here's the skirt seen from behind. i didn't refinish the inside seams because you can just leave them with jersey. i preferred to overlock the hem. the waistband is very easy to do (like i did with my maternity pants), but in the end i don't love plain fabric waistbands because they inevitably end up stretching and moving around.

che dire, ma questa gonna è comodissima! è quello che si aspetterebbe da qualcosa costruita da magliette comode! poi mi piace che è molto divertente indossarla. eccola in azione, mentre giro mio figlio. vedete come i pezzi aggiunti si alzano?
what can i say? this skirt is so comfortable! it's just what you'd expect from something made out of comfy t-shirts! then i love how fun it is to wear it. here it is in action, while i swirl my little guy. see how the frilly parts fly out?

per la seconda gonna ho usato una maglietta a maniche lunghe che, mi ricordo ancora, ho comprato tra il primo e il secondo anno di università in un negozio di washington street a boston, e mi è sempre piaciuto un sacco. solo che si era ristretta un po' e ora non sopporto più i top con nemmeno un po' di poliestere. ho usato solo una striscia della maglietta marrone per la fascia elasticizzata.
for the second skirt i used a long-sleeved shirt which, i can still remember, i bought between my first and second year of university in a store on washington street in boston, and i always liked it a lot. but it had shrunk a little and now i can't stand shirts with even a little bit of polyester in them. i just used a strip of the brown shirt for the elastic waistband.

avevo programmato di fare un top a fascia con il supporto interno per il seno, ma quando ho tagliato la maglietta mi sono resa conto che poi non si potrebbe più vedere la parte rossa superiore e senza sembrava un po' troppo tetra. quindi ho cambiato programma e ho deciso di fare un'altra gonna. l'ho tagliata ancora per fare sempre una gonna assimetrica e ho fatto più o meno nello stesso modo della prima gonna.
i had planned on making a tube top with a built in bra inside, but when i started cutting the shirt i realized that you wouldn't be able to see the red part anymore and it seemed a bit too blah without it. so i changed plans and decided to make another skirt. i cut again to make it assymetrical and did it more or less like the first skirt.

questa volta ho usato un elastico alto dentro la fascia e così mi piace molto di più perché sta più ferma. e poi ho deciso di fare le cuciture solo con la macchina taglia cuci e cucire all'incontrario in modo di vedere le cuciture sull'esterno. (questo ultimo dettaglio è tipico dello stile del libro che ho già nominato.)
this time i put a wide elastic inside the waistband and i like it much more like that because it stays put. and then i decided to do the seams with the overlock machine and place them on the outside of the skirt so they'd be visible. (this last detail is typical of the style of the the aforementioned book.)

le foto in posa sono troppo noiose, quindi di nuovo eccola in azione, questa volta nella piazza di pontelandolfo (provincia di benevento). mi piace sempre non solo la sua comodità, ma anche come si muove la stoffa con il movimento o con un po' di venticello.
i'm not a fan of posed pictures, so here are some of the skirt in action, this time in the piazza of pontelandolfo (near benevento, italy). i love it not only for its comfort, but also how the fabric moves when i do or when there's a breeze.


ma soprattutto, la cosa più bella di costruirsi i vestiti da soli e la soddisfazione che si sente. perfino mia figlia rimane affascinata dalle cose che creo! doppia soddisfazione! (e non ho speso un centesimo... tripla soddisfazione!)
but above all, the best part about making your own clothes is the satisfaction you feel. even my little girl is fascinated by the things i make! double satisfaction! (and i didn't spend a cent... triple satisfaction!)
