La biografia di Andrzej Dragan è ricca di note sulla sua vita, tuttavia la cosa che più mi colpisce è che Andrzej Dragan non ha mai, proprio mai, assaggiato il caffè. Singolare, non trovate?. La lista dei suoi successi è esagerata, e in quanto tale lascia intuire come sia importante per lui affermarsi, stupire. L’anonimato, questo è certo, non fa per lui, e di anonimo, Andrzej, ha ben poco, ed è un aspetto, questo, che si riflette oltremodo nelle sue immagini. I suoi lavori sono fatti per sorprendere, per inchiodare chi li osserva, e non si fanno troppi scrupoli per raggiungere questo obiettivo.

Andrzej Dragan‘s website bio gives copious detail about his many achievements in diverse fields, but the thing that really strikes me is that Andrzej Dragan has never, ever, tasted coffee. Bizarre, isn’t it? The long list of his successes makes you understand how important it’s for him to succeed, to amaze. Anonymity is definitely not for him, and his showmanship is reflected in his images. His works are meant to surprise, to stop observers in their tracks, no holds barred.

Cold blooded - Andrzej Dragan

Andrzej è sicuramente un visionario, una persona che ama masticare e digerire la realtà, per poi sputarla indietro filtrata attraverso la sua carne, il suo cervello, così da poter intaccare il nostro. Non c’è nessuno scopo di indagine del soggetto nel suo essere “un ritrattista”, definizione che per altro non gli si confà in alcun modo, almeno non nei canoni standard per cui è pensata, poiché nessun dettaglio del modello può emergere da queste immagini, sebbene siano rigonfie dei dettagli dell’autore, credo. Parte di questo concetto viene espresso da lui in persona, attraverso queste parole:

Alcune persone affermano che un buon ritratto deve rivelare qualche verità a proposito del modello. Sono desolato nel constatare che queste persone non troveranno niente di interessante nella mia fotografia, che non ha questo scopo.

Andrzej is certainly a visionary, a person who loves to chew up reality and digest it, and then spit it back at the world filtered through his own flesh, his own brain, to create an impact on ours. His purpose is not to reveal something about his subject; the definition of “portrait artist” doesn’t suit him at all, at least not in the standard meaning, because his images don’t allow any details about the model to emerge, although they are full of details about the author, I think. Andrzej express part of this concept in these words:

Some people claim that a good portrait will reveal some truth about the model. I’m undoubtedly sad to state that these people will not find anything interesting in my photography which has no such purpose.

Nessuno dei suoi lavori è lasciato al caso, nessuno, fin nei minimi dettagli. La cura con cui sono realizzate le sue immagini è palese, ed è indice dell’impegno e della dedizione con cui vengono prodotte, ma soprattutto pensate. Per lui ciò che conta è la stimolazione prodotta all’interno del nostro cervello quando l’immagine viene letta, elaborata, capita, e in certi casi respinta. Alcune sue fotografie fanno pensare, altre inorridire, per poi far pensare nuovamente. Io amo il suo lavoro, lo dico senza mezzi termini. Amo il suo modo di enfatizzare certi aspetti, di turbare per attrarre, ma soprattutto di essere più profondo di quel che superficialmente appare. Provate a osservare qualcuno dei suoi lavori: chiedetevi cosa vi scuote, osservateli nella loro interezza, andate oltre la “sofferenza” delle cicatrici, delle ferite, delle atmosfere cupe, delle vene ben evidenti, e noterete come anche un corpo martoriato non mostri alcun dolore negli occhi. Beh, chiedetevi il perché.

Nothing about Andrzej‘s work is left to chance, not even the smallest detail. The care with which he creates his images is obvious, and is a sign of the commitment and dedication with which they are produced, and above all conceived. For him the important thing is the stimulation produced in our brains when the image is viewed, processed, understood, and in some cases dismissed. Some of his photographs make you think, others horrify you, and then make you think again. Frankly, I love his work. I love the way he emphasizes certain aspects – repulsion/attraction mechanism he uses -, but above all I love that is work is deeper than it appears. Try looking at some of his work: ask yourself what shakes you, look at them in their entirety, go beyond the “suffering” suggested by the scars, the wounds, the dark atmospheres, the bulging veins, and notice how even a person with a broken body has not pain in his eyes. Ask yourself why.

Marta - Andrzej Dragan

Il mondo di Andrzej Dragan è un mondo irreale, fatto però di tasselli veri (Marta, per esempio). È un mondo fantasioso dai tratti macabri, dove non c’è spazio, forse, per una morale riflessa del mondo, ma dove tanti piccoli frammenti della personalità di Andrzej trovano una giusta collocazione, come fossero tante piccole porzioni di autoritratti, firme invisibili della sua necessità di fermare gli altri davanti ai suoi lavori, anche fosse solo per un istante, piuttosto che fermare il tempo, o un ricordo, all’interno di essi. E’ un pò come se il concetto di “fotografia” di contenere una qualche “verità” fosse rovesciato: la “verità” è all’esterno delle sue immagini, invece che all’interno, ed è focalizzata nel momento dell’impatto fra l’osservatore e l’immagine. Un paradosso, questo, sul quale potrebbe valer la pena riflettere.

A chi non conosceva ancora il suo lavoro, e imparerà ad amarlo, ma anche a chi non lo amerà mai, porgo un mio personalissimo Benvenuto nel mondo di Andrzej Dragan.

The world of Andrzej Dragan is not the real world, but it contains a bits of reality (Marta, for example). It’s a macabre fantasy world, where there is, perhaps, no space for a reflection of the real world, but where many small fragments of Andrzej’s personality find a place, like many details from self-portraits, invisibles indicators of his need to grab people’s attention, even if only for a moment, rather then capture time, or memories, in his work. It’s as if the concept of “photograph” containing some “truth” was reversed: the “truth” is outside the images, the focus is the moment of impact between the viewer and the image. A paradox that might be worth thinking about.
