Sebbene sia un’isola tropicale molto vicina all’Equatore, lo Sri Lanka ha una varietà geografica incredibile che ha permesso la presenza di ambienti diversificati e quindi la formazione di habitat naturali per molte specie animali e vegetali.

Grazie a questa varietà, lo Sri Lanka è definito hotspot di biodiversità, vale a dire area del mondo particolarmente ricca di specie endemiche.

Per essere qualificato come hotspot un luogo deve avere almeno 1500 vegetali endemici (0,5 del totale planetario). Nello specifico il 16% degli animali e il 23% delle piante dell’isola esistono solo in Sri Lanka (Fonte: National geographic).

Gli animali e le specie vegetali che vivono negli hotspot rappresentano un enorme deposito di diversità genetica di inestimabile valore sia per la ricerca scientifica e sia per la preservazione della biodiversità stessa.

Thanks to this variety, Sri Lanka has been declared biodiversity hotspots,  an area of ​​the world particularly rich in endemic species.

To be qualified as a hotspot, a place must have at least 1,500 endemic plants (total of 0.5 planetarium). Indeed  16% of animals and 23% of the island’s plants exist only in Sri Lanka (Source: National Geographic).

The species  that live in hotspots represent a huge store of genetic diversity of inestimable value both for scientific research and the preservation of biodiversity itself.
