#5 la storia del Consorzio Ovest Sesia e del Canale Cavour. Siamo stati coinvolti nell'interessantissimo racconto intorno alla complicata ed elaboratissima irrigazione delle risaie del vercellese. Vi avevo già mostrato il fascino delle risaie al momento della aggiunta dell'acqua, ma ignoravo quasi per intero la meccanica e le finalità di questo complesso sistema d'irrigazione.
#5 the history of the Consorzio Ovest Sesia and the Cavour canal. We have been involved in very interesting story about the complicated and elaborate irrigation of the rice fields in Vercelli. I've already shown you the charm of the rice fields at the time of addition of water but I did not know almost anything about the mechanics and purpose of this complex irrigation system.

Soprattutto è stato affascinante scoprire il ruolo determinante di Cavour in questo contesto (essendo egli stesso il fautore del Consorzio Ovest Sesia, nato da sua iniziativa nel 1853). Il Canale che porta il suo nome viene però da un'intuizione geniale di un fattore, il crescentinese Francesco Rossi il quale però perse i meriti della sua idea, venendo offuscato dall'importante figura di Cavour e dell'architetto Noé.
Above all, it was fascinating to discover the role of Cavour in this context (being himself the advocate of the Consortium, born of its initiative in 1853). The canal that bears his name, however, is a stroke of genius by a factor, Francesco Rossi from Crescentino, who, however, had lost the merits of his idea, being overshadowed by the important figure of Cavour and the architect Noé.

Questa e altre storie molto affascinanti le abbiamo imparate dalla brillante Dott.ssa Ombretta Bertolo, che ha saputo catturare la nostra attenzione e conquistarci introducendoci in una realtà così importante per il vercellese e l'agricoltura del Nord d'Italia. Interessante sarebbe anche poter vedere quanto abbiamo imparato direttamente sul campo, tra i canali e le risaie che circondano la nostra terra.
We have learned this and other very fascinating stories thanks to the brilliant Dr. Ombretta Bertolo, who was able to capture our attention introducing us into a reality so important for agriculture in Vercelli and in the northern Italy. It could be interesting to see what we have learned directly in the field too, between the channels and rice fields that surround the earth.

#6. In giro per il centro. (Quasi) ultima tappa è stato il giro 'turistico' per il centro accompagnati dalle simpatiche e capaci guide di VCguido, un'organizzazione creata da ragazzi preparatissimi e accomunati dalla passione per la loro città e il loro territorio, con tanta voglia di mostrarla a tutti. Luca, la nostra guida, ci ha portato in giro per il centro, ci ha raccontato le leggende che aleggiano intorno alle numerose torri vercellesi e ci ha portati nel vero tesoro dell'architettura vercellese: il Sant'Andrea.
# 6. Around the center. (Almost) the last stop was the 'sightseeing' tour in the center accompanied by the nice and capable guides of VCguido (it's a pun: VC is the Vercelli's abbreviation and in italian VCguido sounds just like "I'll guide you there") an organization created by young trained people that shares a passion for their city and their country, with a great desire to show it to everybody. Luca, our guide, took us around the center, telling us about the legends that hover around the towers of Vercelli and he led us to the true treasure of Vercelli's architecture: The Sant'Andrea.

Il Sant'Andrea è una favolosa cattedrale di cui anche il vercellese più scettico va fiero. Si tratta di una basilica dove lo stile gotico e quello romanico si intrecciano in modo originale e inedito. E' il patrimonio artistico di Vercelli ed è presente in tutti i manuali di storia dell'arte per le sue caratteristiche particolari. La nostra guida ha saputo incuriosirci raccontandoci varie vicende 'misteriose' legate alla sua costruzione.
Even the most skeptical man born in Vercelli is actually very proud of the fabulous cathedral of Sant'Andrea. It is a church where the Gothic and Romanesque styles mix themselves in an original and new way. It's the true artistic heritage of Vercelli and it is present in all the manuals of the history of art for its particular characteristics. Our guide was able to get us curious telling us various 'mysterious' stories linked to its construction.

Fiore all'occhiello del Sant'Andrea è il suo meraviglioso chiostro. E' il set fotografico di tutti gli aspiranti (e non solo) fotografi di Vercelli. Le sue luci e la sua atmosfera è, a mio avviso, davvero mozzafiato. Aspettatevi un post di fotografie 'random' dedicate alla nostra maestosa basilica.
The pride of Sant'Andrea is its wonderful cloister. It's the set of all aspirants (and not only the beginners) photographers of Vercelli. Its lights and its atmosphere is, in my opinion, truly breathtaking. Expect a post of 'random' photographs dedicated to our majestic basilica.

#6. Il riposo del guerriero. Gli amaretti della Taverna Tarnuzzer sono celebri in tutta Vercelli. Morbidi e dal sapore speciale sono il dolce che tradizionalmente conclude il pasto a base di fritto misto piemontese. Ci siamo concessi una pausa proprio alla storica Taverna in Pzza Cavour per rifocillarci dalla camminata e dalla lunga, bella giornata passata insieme.
E' stato davvero bello aggirarmi per la mia città come se ne fossi estranea e insieme già affezionata. E' stato bello condividerlo con Giacomo e con chi della città non era. E' stato bello farsi coccolare dall'organizzazione impeccabile e brillante di TerreRiflesse che ha voluto dare alla nostra città il volto di un luogo bello, ospitale, ricco e al passo coi tempi.
Ringrazio tutti quanti per aver reso possibile tutto ciò!! Devo anche a loro la rinascita di The Travel Eater!!!

#6. The rest of the warrior. Amaretti by Taverna Tarnuzzer are famous all over Vercelli. Soft and sweet are the special dessert that traditionally ends the meal of fried mixed in Piedmont. We treated ourselves to a break right at the historic Tavern in Pzza Cavour to be refreshed from the walk and this long, beautiful day spent together.
It's been really nice walking around my city as if I were alien and together already being attached to it. It's been great to share it with Giacomo and with those who weren't from Vercelli . It's been nice to be pampered by the perfect and brilliant organization by TerreRiflesse - they succeed in giving our city the look of a beautiful, hospitable, rich and up to date place.
I thank everyone for making this possible! I also owe them for the revival of The Travel Eater!
