Nel 1547, il principe Pier Francesco Orsini, noto a molti come Vicino Orsini, ordinò la progettazione di questi meravigliosi giardini all'egregio architetto Pirro Ligorio, colui che fu voluto dal Papa a San Pietro dopo la morte di Michelangelo. Il Bosco Sacro di Bomarzo, dedicato alla moglie del principe, Giulia Farnese -con ogni probabilità ancora sepolta all'interno del tempio del parco - è una rete di intricati misteri che molti storici e studiosi hanno cercato invano di interpretare e che si sviluppano lungo un incantevole percorso tra alberi e piante secolari. Molti sostengono addirittura che l'opera sia stata voluta proprio per scoraggiare gli avventori, che una volta spaventati dalle creature mostruose e arcane sarebbero fuggiti via.
Ma osservare la grazia e il romanticismo di queste sculture a dir poco monumentali, fa comprendere quanto remota possa essere tale ipotesi. L'imponenza dell'Orco, la maestosità di Nettuno, la forza brutale dell'elefante mentre si appresta ad uccidere un guerriero, calpestandolo, sono solo alcune delle testimonianze di quanta arte e bellezza si nascondano all'interno del bosco. Tra le altre attrazioni si distinguono la sorprendente Casa Pendente, geniale scenografia per l'epoca e il Drago in lotta con i leoni (quest ultimo reso ancor più celebre dall'opera del pittore Olandese Carel Willink ad esso ispirato), la Tartaruga e il mappamondo sulla testa del Proteo Glauco, che reca una miniatura del castello Orsini a significare la potenza del casato. Sfortunatamente, dopo la morte del principe Orsini, il parco è rimasto in stato d'abbandono per secoli ed ha visibilmente risentito di questa mancata manutenzione. Fra le visite più celebri e recenti visite, si ricorda quella di Salvador Dalì che risale al 1938 e che più tardi ispirò una delle sue più celebri opere: "Le tentazioni di S. Antonio".
Il parco dei mostri vale davvero una visita, è sorprendentemente affascinante, ma come molte cose nel nostro paese, non è completamente curato. Nota dolente infatti, l'assenza di rampe che consentano l'accesso alle sculture più interne anche a disabili o a passeggini (come nel mio caso :( ), altrimenti impossibili da raggiungere tramite scalinate ripide e ovviamente dissestate a causa della loro veneranda età.
Peccato perché lo spettacolo da osservare vale assolutamente il prezzo del biglietto e una visita a Bomarzo.

The Sacred Grove of Bomarzo, dedicated to the prince wife, Giulia Farnese - probably still buried inside the temple of the park - is a network of intricate mysteries that many historians and scholars have tried in vain to interpret and develop along a lovely path between trees and plants. Many even claim that the work was intended to discourage its customers, which once frightened by monstrous creatures and arcane would flee away.
But observing the grace and romance of these monumental sculptures to say the least, makes you realize how remote it can be such a case. The grandeur of the Ogre , the majesty of Neptune, the brutal force of the elephant as he prepares to kill a warrior, trampling him, are just some testimonials of how much art and beauty are hidden inside the parc. Among other attractions stand out the amazing Leaning House, a brilliant backdrop for that era and the Dragon in fight with lions ( this last one made even more famous by the work of Dutch painter Carel Willink it inspired ), the Turtle , and the globe on the head of Proteus Glaucus, who bears a miniature of Orsini castle to signify the power of the family. Unfortunately, after the death of the Prince Orsini, the park remained for centuries in a state of neglect and it is visibly affected by this lack of maintenance. Among the most famous views and recent visits , it is reminiscent Salvador Dali that dates back to 1938 and later inspired one of his most famous works: " The Temptation of St. Anthony ."
The monster park is worth a visit, it is surprisingly charming, but like many things in our country, is not completely tidy. Sore In fact , the absence of ramps that allow access to the inner sculptures also to disabled or pushchairs ( as in my case : () , otherwise impossible to reach via steep stairways obviously bumpy because of their advanced age .
Too bad because the show to look worth the price of the ticket and a visit to Bomarzo .
