1. Perché hai scelto di scrivere un libro YA Fantasy invece di altri sotto-generi young adult come contemporary, paranormal, distopico, ecc?
1. Why did you choose to write a YA Fantasy book instead of other young adult sub-genres such as contemporary, paranormal, dystopian, etc.?
ITA – Non credo davvero di aver avuto scelta. Dovevo raccontare questa storia. Certo, ho riempito la storia di alcuni dettagli, ma soprattutto Riya ha scritto la propria storia e ho dovuto cercare di tenere il passo. Una volta che ha preso forma, ho dovuto trovare un buon genere in cui inserirla e l’unico genere che intenzionalmente ho scelto a era lo YA. Mi piace leggere libri YA, e anche per la fascia di età, ero abbastanza sicura che la maggior l’avrebbe classificato come YA, così ho ritenuto opportuno inserirlo lì.
ENG – I don’t think I really had a choice. I had to tell this story. Sure, I filled in some details, but mostly Riya wrote her own story and I just had to try and keep up. Once it took shape, I had to find a good genre to put it in. The only genre I intentionally stuck to was YA. I like to read YA books, and also because of the age range, I was pretty sure most would want to classify it as YA, so I tried to keep it appropriate.
2. Che cosa ti distrae di più mentre scrivi?
2. What distracts you the most while you’re writing?
ITA – Tutto! I bambini, i cani, facebook, email, qualsiasi cosa vi venga in mente. Ho dovuto imparare ad andare nel mio ufficio a casa, chiudere la porta e bloccare internet quando voglio scrivere un buon pezzo. Altrimenti mi distraggo.
ENG – Everything! The kids, the dogs, facebook, email, you name it. I’ve had to learn to go into my home office, shut the door and block the internet when I really want to get a good chunk of writing done. Otherwise I get sidetracked.
3. Qual’è il tuo libro fantasy preferito di tutti i tempi?
3. What is your all time favorite fantasy book?
ITA – Questo è un po’ come chiedere il mio tipo preferito di cioccolato! Hmm, vediamo. Bene, ritengo che Fantasy sia una categoria vasta. Voglio dire, mi stai chiedendo di scegliere tra tutti i libri di Harry Potter e i libri di Twilight e Outlander e Le Cronache del Ghiaccio e del Fuoco. E non dimentichiamo Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight. C’è tanta fantasy impressionante là fuori, non posso semplicemente scegliere un preferito.
ENG – That’s like asking me to pick a favorite type of chocolate! Hmm, let’s see. Well, I consider fantasy a pretty broad category. I mean, you are asking me to chose between all the Harry Potter books and Twilight books and Outlander and A Song of Ice and Fire. And let’s not forget Throne of Glass and Crown of Midnight. There is so much awesome fantasy out there, I can’t simply pick a favorite.
4. Cosa arriva prima, i personaggi o la trama?
4. What comes first, character or plot?
ITA – Sicuramente i personaggi! Per me, i personaggi e probabilmente un assaggio della loro situazione si fa strada nella mia mente e poi devo lavorare sulla loro situazione cercando di capire chi sono e qual’è la loro storia. Neanche a dirlo che non ho mai creato intenzionalmente un personaggio per un’esigenza della trama, ma per la maggior parte, specialmente per i personaggi principali, sono loro a guidar la storia.
ENG – Definitely character! For me, characters and maybe a small tidbit about their situation wheedle their way into my head, and then I have to work to figure out exactly who they are, and what their story is. That’s not to say I’ve never intentionally created a character to fill a plot need, but for the most part, especially for my main characters, they are what drive the story.
5. Che consigli daresti ad uno scrittore che sogna di pubblicare un libro?
5. What advice(s) would you give to writers whose dream is to publish a book?
ITA – Fatelo! Fatelo ora, e fatelo in modo professionale, ma fatelo. Nel vulcanico paesaggio della pubblicazione di oggi, realizzare quei sogni è del tutto possibile e plausibile. Fate la vostra ricerca perché ci sono persone tutt’altro che scrupolose in giro che approfittano di chi non sa, ma se si desidera pubblicare un libro e si è disposti a investire tempo, energia e fatica, non ci sono limiti.
ENG – Do it! Do it right, and do it professionally, but do it. In today’s volcanic publishing landscape, fulfilling those dreams is entirely possible and plausible. Do your research because there are a lot of less than scrupulous people who prey on the uneducated, but if you want to publish a book and you are willing to put in the time and energy and effort, the sky is the limit.
