Eccomi qui prontissima per un nuovo post, in realtà arrivo un pò trafelata perchè questo articolo sarebbe dovuto essere on-line il 12 maggio ma, ancora devo capire come mai, WordPress si è rifiutato di farlo o.O . Mooolto bene. Quindi, dopo vari problemi, copia incolla, ricerche su google e varie parolacce poco edificanti… sono qui a scrivervi per parlare di due libri che, grazie alle carinissime Laurie e Jaidis di Juniper Groove, ho avuto modo di leggere, nonché di conoscere due autrici che spero presto possano “sbarcare” anche in Italia. Due autrici, due libri, un nome che è l’insieme dei due: Chrystal Connor e Lori Titus. Il genere trattato è quello post-apocalittico, con venature horror e fantasy. Insomma… wow! Vorrei davvero tanto che gli editori italiani considerassero questo come genere e importassero i tanti autori (e relative storie) valide che ci sono (perchè ci sono, eh).
Ok, siamo qui comunque per parlare di due libri interessanti, in lingua inglese, che meritano non solo di essere conosciuti ma letti. Di seguito trovate per entrambi la trama, alcuni estratti dal libro, le note degli autori, la mia recensione e… un fantastico giveaway con la possibilità di ricevere le copie cartacee dei libri autografate, le magliette realizzate per entrambi i volumi e una copia dei libri precedenti delle autrici. Cosa succede quando due autrici, una che scrive abitualmente Paranormal Romance e una che scrive Horror con venature science fiction e dark fantasy, si incontrano e decidono di scrivere un libro insieme? Il risultato sarebbe decisamente sorprendente ma Lory Titus e Chrystal Connor hanno deciso di rendere ancora più originale la loro collaborazione. La storia di base del libro nasce da un’idea: cosa succederebbe al mondo se avvenisse un evento di tale portata che la vita come la intendiamo non sarebbe mai più la stessa? Le autrici hanno iniziato a scrivere ma ben presto si sono rese conto che ognuna di loro aveva un’idea molto precisa di ciò che sarebbe “successo”, diversa da quella immaginata dall’altra. E’ così che a quel punto hanno deciso di scrivere due romanzi standalone, ambientati nello stesso luogo e dopo lo stesso cataclisma ma raccontato da due punti di vista diversi.
“Once the decision was made that this story was going to be told from two different points of view, we also made the decision to not only stop working together, but to also not talk to each other about what was written from that moment forth. I mean we went into complete radio silence; we didn’t even see each other’s cover until they were revealed earlier this month as part of our blog tour. La decisione successiva è stata quella di interrompere ogni contatto per vedere dove ognuna avrebbe portato la propria storia, al punto da non vedersi neppure. Un esperimento, un’esperienza, sicuramente originale che ha portato anche noi lettori a vedere la situazione da due angolazioni diverse.

Il mondo non è più lo stesso: la neve è letale, una specie di veleno uccide e distrugge ogni forma di vita su cui si posa. Per questo, appena nell’aria si sente il tipico odore le persone corrono al riparo. Tranne un uomo rimasto fuori troppo a lungo che si trova a terra. Stranamente, però, non è svanito né si è deteriorato come tutti gli altri. Una squadra partirà quindi per capire cosa sia successo e quello che scoprirà cambierà per sempre il loro futuro: quello che avevano classificato come un disastro dovuto all’uomo, è in realtà il risultato di una terribile battaglia tra angeli e demoni.
L’intera storia è permeata da un alone di terrore che tiene incollati alla pagina e impedisce di smettere la lettura. Non approfondisco altro della trama perché più che le idee in sé, saranno la tecnica utilizzata dall’autrice e la continua suspance ad essere le vere protagoniste della lettura. L’ambientazione è il vero perno della storia, la volontà di calare il lettore in una realtà completamente avulsa dalla nostra e fargli provare, attraverso l’immaginazione, un mondo diventato inospitale e pericoloso, dove le paure maggiori sono diventate concrete. Un libro tutt’altro che scontato, con continui stravolgimenti e un finale (perchè è un autoconclusivo) in grado di soddisfare e sorprendere.

–> The Guardian’s of Man
Il libro precedente ha creato un ambientazione davvero spaventosa. Siamo in inverno e la neve può cadere da un momento all’altro. La popolazione vive prigioniera in casa propria per il terrore di venire annientati dai fiocchi che minacciano di scendere dal cielo, un clima di terrore che asfissia anche il lettore. Le comunicazioni sono interrotte, il cibo scarseggia e non c’è energia elettrica, il che sommato all’impossibilità di uscire crea un oppressione tangibile.
Ma insieme alla neve è in arrivo anche un’antico male, preceduto da numerose profezie cui la neve avvelenata e la nascita di un bambino sono solo tra le prime. Il tempo, però, stringe e in un mondo invaso da esseri soprannaturali la gente di Fate’s Keep si domanda se I Guardiani degli Uomini saranno in grado di salvarli, una volta ancora.
Questo secondo libro si concentra maggiormente sulle vicende degli uomini, mentre il precedente sull’aspetto dell’ambientazione e della guerra tra angeli e demoni. Il primo ha un aspetto maggiormente horror e ha anche l’arduo compito – peraltro riuscito – di introdurci in un mondo altro; mentre The Guardian’s of Man si spinge verso il lato umano, la reazione delle persone al male, alle profezie e a coloro che hanno il compito di salvare l’umanità. Meno terrore, più paranormal fantasy in questo volume.

In entrambi i casi lo stile veloce, ma allo stesso tempo dettagliato, coinvolge in una lettura non semplicissima per chi inizia ora a leggere in lingua ma le molte scene d’azione riescono a chiarire molto bene cosa succede. Due romanzi che mi sento di consigliare a chi già mastica bene la lingua ed è affascinato dal genere post-apocalittico: ne resterà incantato.
