collane di arance - orange necklaces

non sono belle queste collane? no, non le ho fatte io. le ho viste ad un mercato nel aprile del 2011. non mi ricordo più in quale paese dell'america latina vengono, ma sono fatti da semi, ghiande e cerchietti di buccia di arancia. mi piacciono molto questi gioielli naturali, come quelli che ho fatto dai semi di melone e quelli di tagua che ho comprato in colombia. (che foto orribili in quel post vecchio!! per fortuna ho migliorato da allora!) ho comprato la collana più a sinistra ed mi sono determinata a farmela da sola con l'arancia.
aren't these necklaces pretty? no, i didn't make them. i saw them at a market in april 2011. i don't remember what latin american country they came from, but they're made from seeds, acorns and little cirlces of orange peel. i really love natural jewelry, such as my melon seed necklaces and tagua jewelry that i bought in colombia. (what awful pictures in that old post!! luckily i've gotten a bit better since then!) i bought the necklace on the far left and was determined to make myself one from orange peels.
solo che non sapevo che usare per tingere le bucce. ma per fortuna mi sono ricordata del colorante ricicloso fatto dai pennarelli esauriti e ci ho provato. più volte.
except i didn't know what to use to dye the peels. but luckily i remembered the recycled dye from dried up markers and i tried it. quite a few times.

per prima bucciavo le arance e ci facevo dei cerchietti col levatorsoli. mi sa che qualche attrezzo non seghettato sarebbe andato meglio perché questo lasciava un bordo non completamente liscio come sono quelli originali. ho anche provato di fare qualche altra forma con il coltello, ma non ci riuscivo a tagliare dei cerchi decenti.
first i peeled the oranged and cut out circles with an apple corer. i bet that some sort of non-serrated cutting tool would have worked better because this left the edges a bit rougher than the original version. i also tried cutting some other shapes out with a knife, but i could cut out decent circles that way.

mettevo i cerchietti nel colorante e, dopo qualche giorno, li scolavo.
i put the peels in the dye and, after a few days, i drained them.

poi li facevo asciugare per bene sulla carta (che ho tenuto per fare un pacco regalo). qui si vedono anche i feltrini usati per fare il colorante. poi prima che si asciugassero, facevo collane con il filo e l'ago.
then i let them dry on some paper (which i kept for wrapping paper). here you can also see the used marker parts for making the dye. then, before they dried, i threaded them with a needle.

...ma non benissimo la buccia esterna, che o rimaneva ancora molto arancione o diventava un colore non esattamente piacevole. a parte il verde, che è venuto bene.
...but the outer peel not so well. it either stayed orangey or became some rather unpleasant colors. except the green, which came out well.

quindi ho pensato, forse si coloreranno meglio senza la buccia esterna. ne ho preso qualcuno ancora umido (quando si seccono diventano troppo duri e sottili per tagliare) e ho cercato di tagliare la parte esterna... solo che si sfantumavano. prova bocciata.
so i thought that maybe they would dye better without the outer peel. i took some while they were still wet (when they dry they become too hard and thin to cut) and i tried to cut off the external part... except they got all crumbly. failed.

quindi per la prova successiva ho tolto la parte più esterna prima di metterli in ammollo nel colorante, lasciando il più possibile della parte morbida e bianca interna.
so for the next experiment i cut off the outermost part of the peel before putting them into the dye, leaving as much as possible of the soft white inside part.

il colore è venuto abbastanza bene, ma era strana la parte dove ho tolto la buccia esterna. poi quando si asciugavano, si facevano troppo sottili e si piegavano un po' troppo. e ho anche notato che, infilando l'ago e filo, il colore dei cerchietti più scuri macchiava quelli più chiari, lasciando una linea nel centro dove passava il filo, e si vedeva bene perché erano così sottili. di nuovo, bocciata.
the color came out pretty nicely, but part where the outer peel was cut away was sort of weird. and when they dried, they got a little too thin and curled in a bit too much. i also noted that, when passing the needle and thread through them, the dye from the darker circles stained the lighter ones, leaving a line through the middle where the thread is, and you could see it too much because they were so thin. once again, failed.

ho pensato: se infilo i cerchietti e li faccio seccare senza metterli nel colorante? non male, ma troppo ovvio il materiale. quindi li ho messi nel colorante già infilati e secchi.
i thought: what if i thread the circles and dry them without dying them? not bad, but the material is too obvious this way. so i put them in the dye when they were already threaded and dried out.

ugh! bocciata!!!
ugh! failed!!!

ho deciso per un'ultima prova. ho usato il metodo della prima prova (lasciando la buccia esterna) ma forse li ho lasciati per più tempo, parecchi giorni, se non mi ricordo male (cavolo, è passato un anno! con tutto quello che è successo in questo anno, non era certo la cosa più importante da ricordare!). sono venuti carini e mi piace l'effetto della buccia esterna, ma mi danno sempre fastidio i bordi irregolari e curvi verso l'interno. quindi, se volete provare questa tecnica, vi consiglio di usare qualcosa di non dentellata  per tagliare e forse di farli asciugare schiacciati tra libri (e molta carta per assorbire il liquido) o una pressa se sei attrezzato. e, mi raccomando, fammi sapere com'è andato!
i decided to go for it one more time. i used the first method (leaving the outer peel) but perhaps leaving them longer in the dye, for quite a few days, if i remember correctly (hey, a year's gone by since then! with everything that's happened this past year, this was certainly not the most important to remember!). they came out nicely and i like the effect of the outer peel, but the bumpy edges curling inwards still bother me. so, if you want to try out this technique, i'd suggest you cut with some that isn't serrated and perhaps let them dry pressed between books (and a bunch of paper to absorb the liquid) or a press if you are equipped with one. and don't forget, let me know how they come out!
