DIY|Giving back life to two old tees

When summer comes, my home becomes full of creativity.I look for old things to renew, I look for buttons, trimmings, inherited from my grandma, I go through drawers, I turn on my sewing machine, I mix my acrylic colors for fabrics, I turn up the music or I watch an old Frank Capra’s movie while in my hands old disused clothes recovers the light and new fabrics become dresses.Some days ago I was tidying up the clothes wich I use to wear when I’m at home, when I found two cotton tees, one blue and one brilliant pink.Instead of leaving them unused, I tried to give life back to them.They turned up and down in my hands and in my mind for few minutes and then, with the precious aid of my magic sewing box, full to the brim of buttons, thread, chains, satin ribbons and sewing scraps, I bring life back to these tees.I cut the edges of the blue one, I painted it with white stripes to give to it a used and tie-dye allure (a little 90’s) and lastly I sewed the little pocket with a coarse cotton thread.The brilliant pink tee became a top with a golden chain application (I bought it some years ago at the hardware shop) and two vintage golden buttons I found at flea market in one of my recent incursions.The last step was to sew on the tees my handmade Arstcrylique label, to give them another personal touch, to underline the uniqueness of two old tees completely transformed.As frequently happens, I wanted my DIYs to be visibly handmade and I wanted to emphasize cut, stitchings, errors instead of hiding them.The beauty of a piece of clothing is the story of it, much more than its image, or at least, this is what's on dit in this home.//
Quando arriva l’estate, la creatività si espande nell’aria di casa mia.Vado alla ricerca di vecchie cose da sistemare, di bottoni e passamanerie ereditati dalla nonna, rovisto nei cassetti, accendo la macchina da cucire, mescolo i colori per tessuti, accendo la musica o guardo un vecchio film di Frank Capra mentre tra le mie mani vecchi abiti dismessi riacquistano la luce, o nuove stoffe acquistate nel mio negozio di tessuti preferito divengono abiti.Pochi giorni fa, sistemando i vestiti che uso in casa, ho trovato due t-shirt in cotone, una blu ed una rosa acceso.Anziché lasciarle inutilizzate, ho cercato di ridargli vita.Hanno rigirato tra le mie mani e nella mia mente per qualche minuto, poi, con il prezioso aiuto della mia scatola magica del cucito, piena fino all’orlo di bottoni, fili, catene, nastri di raso e scarti di cucito, le ho fatte rinascere.Ho tagliato i bordi della tee blu, l’ho dipinta a strisce bianche per dare un effetto rovinato tie-dye un po’ anni ’90 e ho cucito la taschina con del cotone grosso.La maglietta fucsia si è invece trasformata in un top con applicazione di una catena (comprata dal ferramenta qualche anno fa) e due bottoni vintage oro trovati al mercato delle pulci in una delle mie recenti incursioni.Ultimo passo è stato quello di cucirvi la mia etichetta Arstcrylique fatta a mano, per dare un ultimo tocco tutto mio, per sottolineare l’unicità di due semplici vecchie magliette, completamente trasformate.Come spesso succede, il risultato che cercavo per i miei DIYs era quello del fatto a mano visibile, nel quale tagli e cuciture ed errori non siano celati, ma enfatizzati.La bellezza di un abito è spesso più la sua storia che la sua immagine, o almeno questo è quello che si dice in questa casa.PS_For all the ones who are asking me in these days: the next tees of my handmade collections will be available on the Online Shop from the first days of july.I decided with my graphic designer to wait to launch the tees after the two prototypes because we’re doing a graphic and handmade work for the official launch.Be patient!
